Iron Man was retreating!
At the last possible moment, Cyborg appeared, saving Iron Man as he plummeted from the sky!
Even more importantly, Batman had arrived!
Seeing this, everyone felt a huge weight lift off their hearts, as if a savior had come. Cheers erupted across New York.
Even the agents in S.H.I.E.L.D. at the TCRI building could vaguely hear the noise spreading throughout the city.
Partly, they were surprised at Batman's stature in people's hearts.
Partly, they felt some relief.
The superhero team led by Batman was considered S.H.I.E.L.D.'s ally.
Their arrival greatly reduced the potential damage from the alien invasion.
Now, aside from a few S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, almost no one had been harmed.
Previously, if they could neutralize the War Fortress above, the alien invasion could reach a complete resolution.
"Batman, what's your plan?"
Nick Fury didn't give Batman complete trust.
The main reason: the enemy was overwhelmingly powerful.
Tony Stark had been fighting in his armor in the sky for quite some time, struggling even to get near the War Fortress.
Batman was formidable, but Fury didn't think the methods Batman had shown so far would be enough to take down the fortress.
Moreover, an alien, whose abilities were unknown, stood on a platform extending from the fortress.
This was why Fury hadn't focused on Batman at the very start.
Quietly, he pulled a pager from his pocket.
If things went wrong, he would immediately deploy his trump card.
Meanwhile…
"Cyborg? Batman?"
Tony saw the two arrivals and, although relieved, also felt deeply humiliated.
Pathetic!
Proud Tony silently noted the scene, vowing never to let it happen again.
Boom!
The ice encasing Tony's armor cracked as Cyborg fired an energy blast at him.
Clack! Clack! Clack!
Before Tony could even react, the blast shattered the ice around his suit, restoring his mobility.
"Thanks!"
Tony nodded to Cyborg.
From the Doctor Octopus incident to the Iron Tyrant situation, and now this alien invasion, Cyborg had rescued him more than once.
Was fate playing a hand?
Was this guy truly destined to be his savior?
Tony's expression was complicated.
"Save your thanks for after this is over."
Cyborg replied and leapt into the air, joining Batman.
Clack!
The Batmobile's cockpit opened.
Batman flipped out and stood on the hood, shoulder to shoulder with Cyborg.
Under the gaze of countless onlookers, the two slowly approached the War Fortress.
"Two more humans overestimating themselves!"
From within the robot, a low, disdainful voice spoke. It reached Cyborg and Batman clearly.
They weren't surprised that the alien could speak English.
Presumably, it had studied Earth and its culture during observation.
The alien hadn't entered Earth earlier because of the War Fortress.
It needed to ensure that upon arrival, it could crush any human resistance.
The fortress was its confidence source.
"Overestimating themselves?"
Cyborg and Batman exchanged a glance and smiled similarly.
Below them…
Iron Man soared.
By now, Tony had lost most of his combat effectiveness. The Arc Reactor in his body had dropped to 39%.
If anything, he could only assist Cyborg and Batman.
"Be careful. This ship has incredibly strong defenses. If we don't break through the external system, we can't get close," Tony warned.
"Tony, from now on, just watch. Cheer like any New Yorker," Batman said, glancing at him.
With that, Cyborg ignored Tony's warning. Jets blasted behind him, propelling him straight toward the fortress.
The Batmobile surged after, blasting through the air with Batman aboard, heading straight for the alien controlling the humanoid robot on the external platform—Rang, like a red jellyfish.
Boom!
Shockwaves spread in all directions, striking Tony's suit and causing him to wobble midair.
"You two!"
Tony had no words.
These two ignored his advice entirely.
"Hmph!"
He snorted, preparing to stand still and watch them fail.
The fortress' external defenses were incredibly sophisticated, giving him a hard time.
Even though J.A.R.V.I.S. accessed the fortress' internal network and central database, it couldn't bypass the defenses. At best, it could gather information on the fortress and its commander, Rang.
Taking full control of the fortress was impossible.
After all, the War Fortress was alien technology from another civilization.
The distance between Earth and this civilization spanned unknown solar systems.
For J.A.R.V.I.S. to connect at all was already a testament to Tony's brilliance.
Tony didn't understand Cyborg and Batman's exact plan, and didn't believe they could bypass the fortress' defenses and confront Rang directly.
Next moment…
The fortress' external turrets aimed at Cyborg and Batman.
Just like Tony's earlier attempt to storm the fortress.
Tony could almost see them getting pounded back by energy blasts.
All of New York, including S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, held their breath, eyes locked on the sky.
Whoosh!!
Energy blasts shot forward like lightning.
Cyborg lifted his hand slightly.
The blasts instantly veered off as if under his control, flung to other directions.
Boom! Boom!
The shells exploded far away, shattering the dark clouds high above.
Cyborg and Batman didn't falter.
They moved unimpeded, seemingly anticipating the attacks, piercing through the barrage, and reached the extended platform where Rang was positioned.
Tony's eyes widened, cursing under his breath.
"Sh*t!"
Under hundreds of thousands, even millions of eyes, Cyborg and Batman achieved what Tony Stark couldn't, despite long efforts.
"How is this possible?"
Tony was dumbfounded.
Outclassed! Everyone was showing off—except Iron Man.
He felt a pang of resentment, wondering if Cyborg and Batman had arrived long ago just to watch him struggle.
Below…
Near the TCRI building, S.H.I.E.L.D. agents sighed in relief.
Batman was, indeed, more reliable than Iron Man.
Even Nick Fury felt the same, giving Batman some trust via a specially modified pager.
…
"What's going on?"
On the fortress platform, Rang, controlling the humanoid robot, was confused.
Theoretically, the energy blasts should have blocked every route for these two humans.
They shouldn't have passed unharmed!
Only Anton, observing as Batman with Cyborg and Green Arrow projections, knew the truth.
Cyborg had the ability to hack alien technology.
With his quantum-computer brain, he had started infiltrating the fortress' network from the moment it appeared, achieving impressive results.
J.A.R.V.I.S. couldn't do it, but Cyborg could.
Under Cyborg's manipulation, the energy blasts' trajectories were altered, allowing them to pass safely.
Rang had no idea a super hacker had infiltrated his fortress.
Even Tony didn't grasp this, unable to imagine someone doing what he couldn't.
Boom!!
Cyborg and Batman reached Rang face to face.
The red jellyfish-like alien roared and brandished its arms.
"I warn you only once!"
Rang emerged from the robot's torso, a detached brain with tentacles beneath.
"Leave my ship!"
Click!
The humanoid robot transformed its arms into long cannons aimed at Cyborg and Batman.
Anton thought the description of Rang as "chewed gum" was quite fitting.
According to him, Rang was originally a warlord from another planet, reduced to a brain controlling a moving fortress, arriving on Earth to ally with Shredder, who provided a humanoid robot.
In another version, Rang was the last of his alien race, seeking to terraform Earth to resemble his home planet.
Either way, Rang was a notorious and dangerous alien criminal.
Anton realized the cannon already formed a blue energy sphere.
Whoosh!!
The external platform—visible to all—was tense.
Countless eyes in New York watched without blinking.
This was about life and death on Earth; nobody wanted to miss a moment.
…
TCRI building.
Daredevil and Spider-Man rushed inside.
They eliminated the remaining Foot Clan members and confronted Shredder and the female ninja Karai.
The two were prepared for battle, unsurprised by their arrival.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
Daredevil fought Karai, Spider-Man faced Shredder in samurai armor, his eyes radiating lethal intent.
Shredder, a master ninja!
Spider-Man, trained by Master Splinter, had heard of Shredder many times.
"If I beat you, I finally graduate!"
He whispered, thinking of his turtle mentors.
The four turtles had only been recognized by Splinter because Shredder had been defeated.
"Looks like history repeats itself, Shredder!"
Spider-Man faced the armored enemy without fear, full of anticipation.
"Hmph!"
Shredder said nothing.
He wanted to finish his opponent quickly and go confront Rang aboard the alien ship to conquer Earth.
Bang!
Their battle erupted.
…
Outside the TCRI building, the streets.
Rhino and Boar fought Green Arrow and the Ninja Turtles, utterly outmatched.
Relying on brute force, they crumbled against opponents of similar strength.
Under the eyes of remaining S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, the turtles battered Rhino and Boar.
Green Arrow shot arrows at their weak points.
Boar lost one eye.
Hawkeye had never managed this before, and now he and Natasha had lost most of their strength.
Supported by other agents, they watched helplessly, embarrassed.
Clearly, they were outmatched.
As S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top agents, even they began doubting their own abilities.
Fury seemed to include them in the nascent superhero team, tentatively named the "Avengers."
Compared to Batman's Justice League, the Avengers looked like a bunch of "weaklings."
Not just them—even Iron Man, joining the Avengers, felt the same.
Observing the fortress' internal feed, Tony listened to J.A.R.V.I.S., doubting S.H.I.E.L.D.'s abilities.
The provisional Avengers roster had only three members: him, Hawkeye, and Black Widow.
Meanwhile, Batman's Justice League had Batman, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Venom, Green Arrow, Cyborg, and the Ninja Turtles—skilled, diverse fighters.
How could the Avengers compare?
Just with stubbornness?
