Let me take this!" As Vanessa sat in front of her desk, her assistant rushed forward quickly to gather the envelopes scattered across it. His movements were unusually hurried, almost tense, and Vanessa immediately noticed the nervous glance he threw toward the office door as though afraid someone might walk in and attack him directly.
Before he could take them away, her gaze fell on one envelope resting near the top and she stopped him immediately. "Wait."
The assistant froze at once. "What is it?"
"Where are you taking the mail?" Vanessa frowned slightly as she reached toward the envelopes again. "I'll just check it myself."
"The police officers said we should verify everything first and let them inspect it before it reaches your desk."
Vanessa stilled slightly at the words. Somehow, the thought of the police opening all her mail did not sit well with her. "Hasn't the mail already been scanned once as per protocol?"
