The moon was bright that night when everything changed. For the first time in millennia, the Watchers chose which of Earth's species could evolve into higher intellect. They wonder which it was.
Reptilians had already dominated and met their doom. Birds tempted, but that meant dinosaurs retaining power as smaller, airborne, feathered creatures.Insects and arachnids had potential, but evolving another cold-blooded species was too risky. Despite incredible abilities and four-armed efficiency, they remained cannibals.
Amphibians were also excluded. Breathing on land and water allowed wide colonization, but they lacked intellectual promise. Some were too toxic for contact—imagine a race forbidden from touch.
Fish and mollusks, now that would be an…interesting option. Dominating land was good, but so was the sea. Imagine spending most of the day in underwater cities, open to a bigger population that wouldn't be crowded. There was more ocean mass than land, an obvious fact. Unfortunately, not a suitable option as they would be unable to become high intellectuals. So the only option left was the warm-blooded beings, anything capable of growing fur on their skin. Anything capable of learning. The problem was being more specific than that.
There were various options…except primates. They already had the spotlight as Homo Sapiens who went extinct from their ignorance of harming the planet with pollution and deforestation.
Rodents survived the downfall of dinosaurs, so surely they could evolve. Sadly, that was never going to become a reality. Rodents had too many types of predators. Predators who will never give them the chance to go through intellectual evolution.
Antelopes could work, then again, maybe not. Nothing with hooves was capable of engaging in a human-like lifestyle. Anything they didn't understand would either frighten them or be impaled by their pointy horns and antlers. So that was out of the question.
Bears maybe? The biggest predators in the mammal community. Surely they would want more power in society. False! They were quite satisfied with their position.
There had to be a mammal species that was closely connected to the previous regime. A species that lived with them daily. Creatures that were companions of homo sapiens for centuries. The ones who humanity pampered, trained, and played with. The perfect alternative to raise like a human infant.
Why, none other than a species that earned the title 'Man's best friend', that's right. The general name is too well-known to be said out loud.
Starting from the last year of humanity. Back in the twenty-eighth century. When nature was at its worst and cities were already filled with corpses that croaked from an unknown cause, it was then that the world took action.Nature took full advantage of humanity's downfall, the regrowth and restoration were performed, and the world was set back to one million years before. Minus the gigantic carnivorous plants and enormous insects. And the cats with fangs too big for their mouths and the dinosaurs—wait, that was sixty-five million years—okay, you all understand the idea.
It was like that for the next one thousand years until "man's best friend" wanted to honor the masters of their ancestors by resuming their work.It all started with wanting the ability to read the written work. While nature overtook the planet, it didn't destroy all of Man's work.
_________
Night of the first year of the Forty-first century
Two anthropic Labrador retrievers were headed to the nearby city, in a rush as their lives depended on it. Growls and snarls follow close behind.
"Do not lose them! The thieves will pay for their treachery!" A male voice barked at the rest of the tribal wolves.
As the two ran with all their might, the female saw a border up ahead.
"There! Quick, get out your ID!" Running as fast as they could, the female retriever accidentally tripped, and the wolves took advantage of the mistake.
"Yvonne!"
An airborne vehicle hovered above, shining a light on the anthropic wolves. "THIS IS THE S.T.A.R.S. BORDERLINE. RETURN TO THE FOREST, STEP ANY CLOSER TO THE CIVILIANS AND WE WILL OPEN FIRE", the anthropic Cocker Spaniel warned through a megaphone.
One of the wolves tried to approach the Labradors but quickly retracted once the aircraft fired warning shots.
Next to the Cocker Spaniel was a Jack Russell. "YOU PRIMITIVES WANNA TRY US? HAH!" He shouted, "DON'T TEST ME YOU MOON KISSERS!"
One of the wolves snarled and growled, "We can't return home without—""We must go", the orange-brown wolf said as he looked down warily. "We have no choice".The grey wolf just looked at her alpha in disbelief, "…What…? No! We cannot quit Alpha Suron!"
The alpha stared at her headstrongly. "Chenake, that's an order—"
"To the underworld with you!" Chenake growled as she charged at the Labradors, only to make a dog whimper when a gunshot sound headed to the scene. Chenake collapsed onto the ground, no longer making breathing movements. Suron and the wolves tried to tend to her, but from the border entrance, soldier Dalmation fired his rifle at the wolves closest to Chenake.
"RETREAT!" One wolf cried, and without hesitation, they all fled from the area and back into the wilderness.
"And stay out ye hide-butt savages!" a Scottish Terrier barked. The Labradors made a run for it into the city. The male Labrador opened his phone and started talking to someone.
"Yes, hello? This is Joseph Knodon. We have the subject ready for testing." Then he made a surprised face, "Oh, you're already here? I don't see any vehicle—"
A car zoomed towards them, then made a dramatic turn-stop. The window rolled down to reveal a rottweiler. "Get the hell in!"
The two immediately went in, and the car moved to a special facility. The labradors walked past dogs who were in trench coats and others who were security guards. Walking into a laboratory, Yvonne placed the object she had been carrying inside a blanket wrap.
As she unwrapped, she smiled at the young blue-furred pup."She's so beautiful"."And worth the trouble, she is exceptional".
Yvonne picked up the pup and gently pressed her finger on its nose; the pup responded with its first words. "Mama".
Yvonne's eyes widened with sparkles, she smiled, and held the pup close to her. "There there, little…what should we call her?"
"How about…Kayonetta?"
"Yes, an original name to match her potential".
