Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 : The Call of the Spirits

Sunlight streamed through the tall windows of the magic classroom, glinting off crystal boards as students scribbled fervently. Today, the air buzzed with excitement—the Headmaster had just announced a momentous event.

"In a few months," he had said, "the Great Spirit Contract Ceremony will be held once again—an event that comes only once every seven years."

The room erupted in murmurs of anticipation.

"This time I'll surely receive a high-ranked spirit!""Hah! I'll settle for a mid-tier one at least. If it's lower, I'd rather die!"

The words pricked at Serena's heart. She remembered standing in that very ceremony as a child—remembered waiting, hoping, praying—only for no spirit to come. The most painful day of her life.

In the Classroom of Noble Etiquette

Students sat in groups, practicing simulated diplomatic negotiations. The stern lady instructor surveyed them sharply.

"Who will volunteer to lead the discussion?" she asked.

Silence. Everyone knew that a single misstep under her gaze would invite harsh scolding.

"I will," a calm, steady voice declared.

Kyren Adelric rose to his feet. His eyes were cool yet sharp as he began negotiating a mock dispute over the division of enchanted ore. His arguments were precise, his voice firm, leaving his peers speechless.

When the simulation ended, the instructor actually nodded, lips twitching into approval."Impressive, Adelric. You are an example to the class."

Students whispered in admiration.

Serena sat quietly, her gaze drifting toward him despite herself. He always seemed different from the rest.

That Afternoon – Sword Training Grounds

Steel clashed, sweat dripped. Serena swung her blade with fierce precision, driving back her sparring partner.

"You fight far too well for someone without a spirit," her opponent admitted, breathless yet grudgingly respectful.

"I train so that I will not lose to anyone," Serena replied, lifting her blade again. "I cannot rely on magic like the rest of you."

Light applause came from the edge of the field. Kyren had finished his own training and stood watching, a faint smile curving his lips.

"You truly are someone who never yields," he said softly.

Serena's eyes narrowed. "If I yield… then I would have nothing left."

That Evening – The Dining Hall

The chatter of dozens of students hushed at once when Crown Prince Lucius entered. His warm presence brightened the room instantly. His gaze found Serena, seated alone.

"Serena," he called, smiling, "come sit beside me."

The hall grew tense as she reluctantly rose, taking the seat at his side.

"You look weary," Lucius said gently. "I hear you train every day. You should not push yourself so hard."

"I cannot stop, Your Highness," she answered evenly. "Whenever others look at me, they see only a girl without a spirit. If I am not strong, I will have no place at all."

Lucius frowned faintly, then reached beneath the table, gently clasping her hand."To me… you will always be more precious than their words."

Her heart trembled at his warmth, but she quickly withdrew her hand, conscious of the countless eyes upon them.

From the far corner, Kyren watched in silence, his eyes glinting faintly, unreadable.
