Chapter 3 - Chapter 3:SoulDefender

SoulDefender, this is the name of the guardians that protect poor souls that achieved great things in life.

They're giants-- The bigger they are, more are the souls they protect.

Sadly, Kephriel doesn't have a great relationship with any of them.

Well... he eats souls...

----

My eyes widen as i see the entity become bigger as seconds pass.

It's angry and has no intent of keeping us alive.

Keph sighs as chains pierce through the ground, wrapping around his wrists tightly.

"Aegis..." he mutters,

"Im not in the mood for fighting, right now--"

The creature's angry roar breaks through his voice.

"Kephriel!

You will wander through the darkest pit of hell!"

Keph throws his chains, that instantly wrap around the SoulDefender, trapping him.

We all walk away, too stunned to speak.

"Wh-what was that...?"

Dao asks.

"A SoulDefender.

They protect the souls of the blessed ones..."

He suddenly stops,

"Let me explain this to you real quick...

You're cursed, all of you.

You see spirits, and they see you.

As of now, im the protector of Rafael Sakda, this was the deal.

Im not responsible for neither of you, but...

We're gonna be together for a long while..."

--

It's been two weeks now...

Me and my friends got used it--

I mean, we all went crazy after realizing this wasn't some sort of dream... but that's how it goes, i guess...

Now there's something scarier to care about:

History class, or maybe... sleeping class...

I was slouched in my chair, my head resting on the desk.

Dao was staring at me quietly, while Niran and Preecha were leaning against each other, deep in their dreams.

Well... atleast this is the last day of school before the spring holidays...

My thoughts are interrupted by the bell ringing, while Preecha suddenly spoke up.

"Yo, we doin' it tonight?"

Niran looks away, his eyes widening ever so slightly.

"Im not sure if it's gonna be safe."

I tilt my head, a curious look on my face.

"Doing what?"

"We want to explore the city's abandoned temple...

To know more about this.. God of death ..."

Kephriel spoke up, making all of us flinch.

"There's nothing you need to know.

I already told ya everything!"

Dao glared at him.

"We can't trust you, yet."

"Yeah,well... i saved your friend from death!"

We all sigh, packing our bag's and heading to Dao's house.

In the meanwhile, a student peeks at us from the door, silently hearing our conversation.

---

As we walk through the streets, i can't help but notice how the spirits seem to be less than usual.

I dont ask Keph:

He's probably gonna say some stupid thing, like "It's because they're scared of me."

--------

Niran mumbled, running an hand through his hair.

"Uhm...

Where are all the monsters?"

Kephriel answered, his tone cold.

"They're preparing for their festival, in hell--"

Dao interrupted him,

"Uh? Excuse me? Why don't you go there too, then?"

Preecha played along.

"Yeah, you'll be a fun attraction."

Suddenly, both of their mouths got sealed shut.

"There you go."

----

We set up on the table, thinking about our plans.

All we had to do was go to the temple, search around for informations...

and then come back.

As i sat down, a loud rumble could be heard from the bathroom.

"Yo, Keph! You know how to use the bathroom, right?!"

Kephriel yelled with a trembling voice.

"What the hell! Why is this splashing some strange yellow liquid?!"

My friends laughed, and i couldn't help but feel sorry for Dao: her bathroom was probably destroyed by now.

I huff, trying not to give in, distracting myself by stuffing my mouth with food.

After eating, Keph started explaining the situation.

I dont know what he said... i fell asleep, he talked so much he sounded like some brown noise.

When i woke up, all of my friends we're ready.

I quickly put on my shoes and follow them, without asking any questions.

--

As we roam around the city, Dao clinged to me.

I try to not care about it, but my face was more heated than my toughts.

And, for maybe the second time in my life, i actually feel some kind of emotion, just barely.

We reach the temple, that was just outside of the town, and Keph starts smirking.

"Cmon... lets go, my friends."

Our flashlights point at the walls, revealing all the different designs and paintings.

Dao and Preecha stop to analize the different drawings on display;

Keph stands beside them, explaining the meaning of each one with a proud face.

Me and Niran adventure deeper into the place, entering another room, our breaths becoming faster at every step we take.

I gasp as my flashlight suddenly turned off, and i felt the air around us getting colder...

I quickly glance at Niran, whose flashlight died aswell.

-

"Tchi, Tchi... Tchi..."

i freeze as i hear mumbles coming from behind us, and i quickly turn around.

It's a spirit, a strange one.

He's short, with long arms and torso, his legs wide.

He wears a strange mask, but that was a great thing... i can't imagine how ugly he is.

Out of instinct, Niran punches it, making the creature stumble away in anger.

"Ow... Tchi!"

The entity suddenly slapped my friend, making him fall to the ground.

He quickly stands up, ready to fight.

"Keph!"

I call out, but my words seemed meaningless.

I decide to help Niran, jumping in the battle.

After a long time, we manage to knock him down.

"Guys! What happened!?"

Dao yelled in fear.

"We called for you! Didn't you hear us?!"

Keph pouted, faking a sad and desperate tone.

"That's a Nakwi.

A fighter.

When it hits someone, it absorbs energy and sound to deal powerful hits.

They usually get hired to kill innocent and poor people..."

Niran nodded quickly, reaching over to take the boxing gloves the spirit was wearing, without anyone noticing.

Dao sighs before she starts telling me what she learned from the ancient writings.

"We can't get rid of Kephriel, Raf.

The texts say that once cursed, there's no going back."
