Chapter 48: Let's Create a Country
"Mr. Kurtz, did I mishear you just now?"
Norn didn't quite understand why the topic had jumped to this point. He just had the same idea as Kurtz: he wanted more humans to learn magic.
Why did it come to the point of creating a human nation?
Why, why did things turn out like this?
"You didn't mishear!" Kurtz's voice was firm, carrying a conviction that surprised even him.
He didn't know how the first human nation in this world came to be, but that didn't stop him from promoting its creation.
The idea had been brewing in the back of his mind for weeks now, crystallising with each village they'd encountered, each scattered group of humans they'd helped.
We will create a kingdom belonging to humans.
That will be the first human kingdom on this continent in history.
The Ideal Nation of Ayr.
"Are you insane?"
Serie finally couldn't help but step out from behind a nearby tree, her golden hair catching the filtered sunlight as she emerged from the shadows.
"What? Not going to eavesdrop anymore?"
Kurtz had already spotted Serie's unmistakable golden hair. The ancient elf had never been particularly subtle when she wanted to observe something.
Now that he saw her come out, he began to tease her.
It didn't matter if Serie heard about this. After all, Kurtz still planned to ask her for help.
"Ahem, I just happened to pass by." Serie would never admit that she followed them because she was curious about what the two of them were discussing. Her pride wouldn't allow her to make such a confession.
"But are you serious, Kurtz?"
"Of course, I'm serious. When the time comes, Norn can be the king, and the two of us can be Grand Sages."
Although the title of the first human king made him envious, Kurtz lacked the courage to bear the corresponding responsibility. The weight of it felt crushing just thinking about it.
Because once they truly established such a nation, and he became the king of that nation, he would have to take responsibility for all humans on the entire continent.
Kurtz was not such a saint. He knew his limits.
"You…" Serie narrowed her eyes, scrutinizing Kurtz with the intensity of someone trying to solve a particularly complex magical theorem.
"What exactly are you plotting?"
In her opinion, Kurtz shouldn't be a character like a great saint.
Although this fellow truly was a good person and would unconditionally teach his magic to his kind, he was far from being a saint.
She'd watched him for months now, seen his pragmatic decisions, his calculated risks.
And what he had just said was no different from a saint's actions.
Kurtz spread his hands, the picture of innocence.
"I just think that since Norn wants more humans to learn magic, why not directly establish a nation belonging to humans."
"This way, magic can pass down systematically, and humans can also have their own sanctuary."
The words hung in the air between them. Even as he spoke them, Kurtz could feel the magnitude of what he proposed.
Norn finally recovered from his shock, his face pale: "Mr. Kurtz, this is too sudden."
Norn never dared to hope for such a thing. The very concept seemed like something from a dream, or a nightmare.
One must know that on this continent with so many races, only five nations bore names, and enemies had even destroyed the Dwarf Kingdom once.
One could imagine how difficult establishing a nation would be.
Territory, citizens, army, and so on, it would be a highly complex matter. Just thinking about it made Norn feel it was impossible.
"I won't even mention what establishing a nation needs for now. How will you gain recognition from other races?"
If you want to establish a nation, at the very least, other races must recognize you.
If not, conflicts will arise.
"Serie, have you heard this saying? When you are strong enough, others will consider whatever you do reasonable."
"But you are not strong enough yet."
Serie mercilessly poured cold water on him, though something almost fond lurked in her brutal honesty.
"It's fine, I can wait. Whether it's twenty or thirty years, I can afford it. Besides, in my world, sometimes just one city can call itself a nation."
"What kind of nation has only one city?"
Serie didn't know what kind of nation this could be. With only one city as the entire territory, if the city fell, the whole country would be finished.
Moreover, the demon race destroyed the Dwarf Kingdom because they conquered its entire capital, and almost all the dwarves of the royal lineage died in the capital, leading to other clans being leaderless, and thus the nation crumbled.
This was completely different from a nation collapsing just because its city fell.
"We need a name to establish the 'Human Nation', unconditionally accept all humans, and provide them with shelter. Then, both citizens and an army will slowly emerge."
Norn immediately understood Kurtz's meaning, his eyes widening with realization.
Currently, all humans scatter across various parts of this continent, with no large settlements in sight.
And what Kurtz planned to do was put out the signboard of the Human Nation, attracting humans from all over the continent to join them.
As time passed, this one-city nation would naturally become a qualified nation.
"But isn't this world too dangerous for humans right now? I'm worried…"
Norn worried that even if their name reached other human villages, these people would be too afraid to move.
This world was too dangerous; ordinary people had no chance against monsters. How could they cross vast distances to reach the nation they established?
If this caused other humans to abandon the idea of moving, then their efforts would go to waste.
"So, isn't this where we come in to teach magic knowledge?"
Kurtz patted his shoulder with a confidence that was becoming infectious.
Thus, destiny completed a closed loop at this moment.
"I understand!" Norn looked at Kurtz with admiration, the pieces finally clicking into place.
This man had already thought so far ahead; he felt somewhat ashamed of himself.
"It's just about me becoming king…" Norn said with a wry smile, worried he couldn't bear the responsibility.
"It's fine, believe in yourself, you are the most suitable among us!"
"But…" Norn still hesitated.
"If you don't want to, then let Serie be king. A human nation with an Elf Queen as king, do you think that's appropriate?"
Serie looked confused; how did the topic shift back to her? She hadn't even agreed to help with this mad scheme.
Before she could speak, Kurtz continued: "I can be king too, but then I'll be a hands-off manager, assigning all tasks to you. How does that sound?"
"How is that any different from me being king?" Norn muttered softly, though there was less resistance in his voice now.
Serie, meanwhile, looked at Kurtz with a speechless expression.
"What a self-willed fellow."
Kurtz shook his head, completely ignoring Serie's words.
One could only say that the Elf Queen's cursing skills still needed practice; this level had no effect on Kurtz.
Perhaps if Serie made a disgusted face and cursed him with words like "scum," it might make Kurtz a little happier.
Don't misunderstand, he didn't have such a fetish; he just genuinely found it interesting when Serie made such expressions.
Her usual composed mask slipping was always entertaining.
"So you see, in the end, you still have to be the king. Don't worry, Serie and I will assist you then."
"No, I haven't agreed yet."
Serie felt a bit anxious, her usual composure cracking slightly. Why should she help someone else become king?
That was utterly meaningless.
"You will agree." Kurtz leaned close to Serie's ear, the proximity making her face tingle with an unfamiliar warmth.
Norn didn't know what Kurtz said, but he saw Serie's expression change from reluctance to contemplation, her pupils slightly constricting, and her small hands unconsciously fumbling with the hem of her clothes.
