Chapter 16 - Chapter 16

Weekend with the New Family

The weekend arrived, and Ryan's house had transformed into a full-blown circus in the best possible way. Emily and Clara had moved in, bringing a new energy that filled every corner. Liam bounded from room to room, squealing with delight at having "Mummy Emily" and Clara by his side. Even the maids and the nanny seemed brighter, smiling more, fussing over Emily with gentle admiration.

Ryan, standing by the doorway with Julian on speakerphone, tried to maintain a sense of authority.

"Julian, I said work from home today," he reminded his best friend, watching Liam attempt to climb the staircase on all fours.

Julian laughed through the phone. "I can hear the chaos from here. I'd say you've officially lost your quiet house privileges

Ryan rolled his eyes but couldn't stop the smile that tugged at his lips. "You have no idea."

Clara tugged at Liam's hand, her brow furrowed. "Liam, don't knock over Uncle Ryan's papers! You'll get in trouble!"

Liam puffed his chest out and pointed at Ryan. "Daddy, watch me! I'm strong!"

Ryan chuckled, holding out his hands for a high-five. "Strong, huh? I like that." Liam enthusiastically smacked his hand against Ryan's, missing entirely and nearly tipping over a vase.

Emily appeared with a plate of pancakes, placing them in front of the kids. "Breakfast! Eat before we start our adventure," she announced.

Liam's eyes sparkled. "Mummy Emily! You made pancakes! I love pancakes!"

Clara rolled her eyes with a grin. "You've said that like… five times already."

Liam pouted. "I can say it ten times!"

Emily laughed and shook her head. "Then I'll hear it ten times." She glanced at Ryan, who was still marveling at how natural the scene felt. Both kids called her "Mummy" without hesitation, and it warmed her heart in a way she couldn't explain.

The maids hovered nearby, watching Emily with gentle smiles. "You're very good with them, Miss Emily," one whispered. "It's beautiful."

Emily blushed slightly. "Thank you. They're… very sweet."

Shopping and Amusement Park

By mid-morning, the car was loaded with snacks, toys, and two very excited children. Ryan drove, with Julian happily working from home via video calls, sending texts full of jokes about the chaos unfolding at Ryan's house.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Julian's message read. "Amusement park? With both kids?"

Ryan had replied simply: "Absolutely."

The kids were bouncing with energy. Clara pointed at every store in the mall like she was giving a tour. "Mummy Emily! Look! They have those shoes you like!"

Liam tugged at Emily's sleeve. "Mummy! Candy! Buy candy!"

Emily chuckled. "Slow down, little man. We have a whole day."

Liam turned to Ryan, eyes wide. "Daddy, Daddy! You like candy too!"

Ryan raised his hands in mock surrender. "I do, buddy. But we're on a shopping mission for the family, remember?"

The amusement park was even more chaotic. Liam shrieked with laughter on every ride. Clara held tightly to Emily's hand but couldn't resist racing Liam in the spinning teacups. Ryan followed, holding both kids' tickets, making sure no one tipped over.

"Daddy, faster!" Liam squealed, spinning in circles.

Ryan leaned forward, laughing. "Hang on, champ! You're going too fast!"

Clara squealed beside him. "Mummy Emily, help me!"

Emily held Clara's hand, laughing as they twirled. She glanced at Ryan, who was now a blur of smiles and laughter, perfectly engaged with the kids. She felt a flutter in her chest—warm, full, and happy.

Lunch at the Restaurant

On the way back, Ryan decided to stop at a small family-friendly restaurant. The kids were exhausted but too excited to eat quietly. Liam jabbed at his juice with a straw. "Daddy! Mine!"

Ryan laughed, gently grabbing the cup. "Careful, buddy, it's not a sword!"

Clara, meanwhile, was delicately feeding Liam pieces of her sandwich. "Don't spill it, little brother. You need energy for later."

Emily watched them and felt her heart swell. "You two are quite the team," she said softly.

Ryan leaned back in his chair, glancing at Emily with admiration. "I think they're teaching me lessons, actually."

Liam looked at Ryan seriously. "Daddy, you funny. You make me laugh."

Ryan reached out and tousled his hair. "You think I'm funny? That's a new title I like."

Clara rolled her eyes playfully. "You're officially Dad of the year, Uncle Ryan."

Emily covered her mouth to hide her smile, her eyes sparkling. The scene before her—the chaos, the laughter, the love—was a perfect little snapshot of a family in bloom.

Evening Calm and Reflections

By the time they returned to Ryan's house, the kids were sleepy but happy. Liam clung to Emily, muttering "Mummy" over and over, while Clara helped tuck him in. Ryan watched quietly, a gentle smile tugging at his lips.

He knelt beside the bed, brushing back Liam's curls. "Sleep well, buddy."

Emily kissed Liam on the forehead. "Sweet dreams."

Clara whispered, "Goodnight, Mummy Emily."

Ryan leaned back, taking it all in. The laughter, the chaos, the love, the little hands holding on tightly—it felt right.

He glanced at Emily, who returned his gaze with warmth, and for the first time in a long while, Ryan felt truly at peace.

This was family. His new family.

And despite the challenges, he knew one thing for certain: they were going to be okay.
