Chapter 41 - Chapter 37 : Kaito’s enrollment

Year 29

The streets of Konoha were alive with motion. The morning sun filtered through the trees, casting dappled light across cobblestone paths and tiled rooftops. Families walked together, some chatting excitedly while others quiet with anticipation. Children from every corner of the village, from noble clans to humble civilian homes, made their way toward the towering gates of the Konoha Ninja Academy.

The entrance stood proud, four meters tall and wide, carved from polished stone and reinforced with chakra seals. Above it, polished plaque read:

{Konoha Ninja Academy}

Inside, the courtyard filled quickly. Rows of children lined up, their clan emblems stitched proudly onto their clothes. The air buzzed with excitement, nerves, and the scent of fresh ink and polished wood.

At the front stood Sarutobi Satoru, now a special jonin and newly appointed head instructor of the Academy.

He raised his voice with warmth and pride.

"Welcome, Young leaves of Konoha! Welcome to the Ninja Academy!"

A ripple of cheers and murmurs rippled through the crowd. Some children beamed. Others clutched their parents' hands a little tighter.

"Here, you will train together and grow individually to become excellent shinobi of Konoha. I have no doubt that every one of you will graduate as genin after five years of training."

He held up three figures.

"There are three things to remember as students:

First – we are one family. Love your peers as you love your clan and village.

Second – never give up. A shinobi endures. Believe in your potential.

Third – love yourself. Your body is your greatest weapon. Care for it well."

He smiled as he softened his voice.

"Congratulations on your admission. Your journey begins now."

The children stood straight with pride as their smile beamed with anticipation. Chunin instructors stepped forward, calling names and dividing them into classes. Parents lingered at the edges, watching with pride and quiet anxiety.

---

From the edge of the crowd, Shinichi watched as his younger brother Kaito stepped forward with determination. Kaito's eyes scanned the courtyard as he moved, searching – until they met Shinichi's. He smiled and gave a subtle nod.

Shinichi nodded back with warm smile.

"Shinichi."

He turned.

"Sensei. I didn't know you'd become head instructor already."

Sarutobi Satoru laughed, his voice low and familiar.

"Haha! I got lucky."

"Luck is part of your skill."

Satoru grinned. "If I didn't have the aptitude, I'd still be stuck overseeing a small group of students as classroom instructor. Hokage-sama must've seen something in me."

"You earned it," Shinichi aid. "No doubt."

Satoru chuckled. "I can't win against you in an argument, Shinichi-kun. You're here for your brother?"

"Yes."

"Well, I'm sure he'll excel. Maybe he'll graduate early like you!"

Shinichi's smile faded slightly.

"…I don't want Kaito to graduate early. I want him to experience all five years. To grow slowly and safely."

Satoru's expression shifted in surprise and nodded as he sensed the weight behind Shinichi's words.

"…We'll see, Shinichi-kun. We'll see."

Satoru then turned towards the new students entering the Academy building as said goodbye to Shinichi.

"Well, I need to get back to work."

"Thank you, Sensei. It was good to see you again."

"Me too, Shinichi. Me too."

As Satoru walked away, Shinichi turned toward the Academy gates. The wind rustled the trees, carrying with it the distant sound of laughter and footsteps.

'War is coming. I won't let Kaito be part of it.'

His resolve deepened.

Uchiha compound, Fukashi Household

The sun had begun its descent, casting the village in warm amber hues. The Fukashi household sat nestled within the Uchiha compound. It was a modest and quiet two story tall traditional house surrounded by a well-tended garden of plum trees and moss-covered stones.

Minami sat on the veranda, her tea steaming gently in the cool evening air. She wore a simple robe with her hair tied back. She gently sipped her tea as her gaze fixed on the swaying garden.

Shinichi entered silently, his footsteps soft against the wooden floor. He joined her without a word, sitting beside her and watching the breeze move through the leaves.

"You saw him off?" she asked in a calm soothing voice.

He nodded.

"He looked so proud," she said with a smile. "He really looks up to you, you know?"

Shinichi didn't respond immediately. His gaze remained fixed on the garden and the statue of Uchiha Madara, half-shrouded in the shadow beneath the plum trees.

"That's what worries me the most," he said finally.

"Why?"

"I don't want him to graduate early," he explained. "I want him to stay in the Academy. All five years."

Minami turned to him, her expression soft.

"You're worried."

"I'm certain," Shinichi replied. "War is coming. The signs are already there... And I don't want Kaito anywhere near it."

Minami placed her hand gently over his.

"You were always the one who carried more than your share. But Kaito isn't you. He's still growing. Let him have his time."

"I will," Shinichi said. "But I'll be watching. Every step."

Minami smiled.

"And Fukashi and I'll be watching you too."

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the compound grew quiet. The lanterns flickered to life, casting soft light across the veranda.

Inside, the house was still and peaceful as Minami and Shinichi silently sipped on their tea.

Outside, the village was changing, reorganizing the policies and command structures.

Further away, the world shifted silently.

Omens of war brewed beyond the borders. The peace, fragilely held together by Hashirama's existence, began to falter as he passed his position to Tobirama.

But here, in this moment, Shinichi sat with his family.

And for a brief time, the future could wait.

Meanwhile, at the Ninja Academy...

The classroom smelled faintly of chalk, polished wood, and fresh ink. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, casting warm light across rows of desks. The walls were lined with scroll racks and chakra diagrams. At the front, a large blackboard bore the words:

Day One: What It Means to Be Konoha Shinobi

Kaito sat near the middle of the room with his back straight and hands folded neatly on his desk. He wore navy blue high collared shirt with Uchiha crest stitched proudly on his back. Around him students, about 20, whispered and fidgeted; some were wide-eyed with excitement, while others already sizing up their classmates.

He glanced to his left. A boy from the Inuzuka clan was scratching his ear while his small ninken pup snored inside the hood of his jacket. To his right, a quiet girl with pale eyes from Hyuga clan was tracing chakra flow patterns in her notebook.

Then the door slid open.

Instructor Ayame, a seasoned Chunin with a calm demeanor and sharp eyes, stepped into the room.

"Good morning, class," She said in a clear and firm voice. "Welcome to your first day at the Ninja Academy."

The room quieted instantly.

"You've all come from the different clans and different backgrounds. But here, you are equals. You are students of Konoha. And over the next five years, you will learn what it means to protect this village, your comrades, and yourselves."

She walked slowly between the rows, her gaze sweeping across the room.

"Some of you may be prodigies. Others may struggle. But that doesn't matter. What matters is effort, discipline and heart."

Kaito felt his chest tighten. He thought of Shinichi, his elder brother and well-known prodigy. The one who graduated early. The one who carried the weight of the clan's expectations.

He too admired him deeply.

But he didn't want to be Shinichi.

He wanted to be himself.

Ayame stopped at the front and tapped the board.

"Let's begin with a question. What is the most important trait of a shinobi?"

Hands shot up.

"Strength!"

"Speed!"

"Chakra."

"Completing Missions."

"Jutsus!"

Ayame smiled faintly.

"All good guesses. But none of them are correct."

She turned and wrote a single word on the board:

Perseverance

"A shinobi Perseveres through pain, failure, and loss. You will learn techniques, yes. But more importantly, you will learn how to keep going when everything else tells you to stop."

Kaito stared at the word. It echoed something Shinichi had once told him.

{"A shinobi doesn't win by being the strongest. He wins by standing when others fall."}

Ayame continued.

"Now, let's get to know each other. Introduce yourselves. State your name and one reason you want to become a shinobi."

One by one, the students stood.

"My name is Nara Tetsu. I want to become a shinobi so that my parents will stop nagging me."

"My name is Sarutobi Gotaru. I wish to master all jutsus of our clan and of Konoha!"

"I am Inuzuka Riku! I and Aomaru will form the strongest duo in Konoha!"

Then Kaito stood.

"I'm Uchiha Kaito... and I want to protect my family..... And one day, surpass my brother."

Ayame nodded with an understanding look.

"A noble and ambitious goal."

Kaito sat down as his heart pounded.

He loved his family. Fukashi, Minami, and Shinichi pampered and protected him. He appreciated their love and concern, but as his world expanded beyond the family and clan, he longed to earn recognition on his own terms.

"I am Hyuga Emi.... It is my duty to protect the clan... and the village."

...

The rest of the class continued, and soon the room was filled with stories, dreams, and laughter.

As the lesson shifted to chakra basics, Kaito opened his notebook and began to take notes.

Outside the classroom, the wind rustled the trees as fresh new leaves danced to the rhythm.

A new generation was beginning its journey.

And Kaito, for the first time, felt the stirrings of something he always wanted.

Here, in the academy, among his peers, he felt confident.

And stronger.
