Chapter 22 - A Quiet Morning

'Ah, this makes my job much easier.'

June thought to himself, as the hot coffee poured down his throat like a gentle yet rushing stream of black and brown. Subtly, he shifted his weight towards the direction of the Pandavar's smugglers, in an attempt to eavesdrop better.

'It's hard to tell due to the small mind hex, but Quiver is among one of these guys.'

June let out a sigh as he placed his cup of black coffee down and grabbed the fork on the side of his silvery plate. The plate seems quite antique in design, nothing like those ones that he usually used in NQSC or back when he served the Government. The plate has these beautiful, intricate lines of gold that's drawn around it with a drawing of a bright scarlet rose in the centre, creating an authentic feel to the tableware.

Using the silver fork and then a knife, he cleaved the minotaur steak in front of him while concentrating on what the Pandavar's smugglers were saying.

'Eliminating them here would be quite troublesome.'

June pondered to himself. Unlike his previous assassination of Awakened Barga and the subsequent battle with the enforcer, Awakened Worf, which pushed his senses to the utmost limit, dealing with these smugglers is going to be harder.

This is mainly due to the fact that before, he managed to get the Pandavar's members into a private area with little to no people nearby. Eliminating 4 different Pandavar members, as well as extracting information, is going to be much harder to do in a public area like this motel.

June shook his head as he chewed on his thick piece of steak.

'Not bad, the taste is quite decent.'

The steak itself was quite tender, and judging from the taste, he could tell that these pieces of meat had quite the marbling. Which was quite rare to find these days.

'Ah, legacies....'

After fifteen minutes or so, he washed his mouth with a paper napkin on the table. It's just then that June saw one of the Pandavar members stood up, heading elsewhere.

'Perfect, just what I needed.'

Given the perfect opportunity, June looked towards one of the servers on the other side of the room with his right arm raised, signalling that he's finished. Moments later, he stood up and walked, pretending to head to the restroom, eyes still anchored to the Pandavar member like a hawk watching its prey.

It seems that this guy was heading outside of the building complex, towards the river or woods... Well, it didn't surprise him all that much; it is common for those who visit Rivergate to watch the nature sceneries after all.

'There's also the fact that a lot of people wanted to see the ancient dam themselves.' June thought to himself, as he turned back and headed towards the same direction as the Pandavar member who had just left.

Thanks to his dormant ability, he can still track where his target is, even if his target has indeed left the building.

His goal as of now is to sneak up behind him somewhere and ambush the Pandavar. Then interrogate them and their purpose. To see where they are going.

Even though June is now curious about their dealings with Shard Dust and its purpose. His recent skirmish with the Enforcer had only heighten his curiosity... and given a deeper purpose to his initial assignment from the black market.

However, he had not forgotten what was written in his contract with Smiley: simply get rid of the Pandavar.

Interrogation was just a cherry on top of what his actual purpose is.

Still, he was debating whether to kill him outright or extract information from the target. After all, he has to stay ahead of the competition and get his sweet payment.

June took in a deep breath and took in the surrounding scenery, as the pandavar member returned fully into his line of sight. Given how it was still quite early in the morning, there was hardly anyone at all outside, allowing the Corsair more leeway to act.

'Ah, these guys must be amateurs after all.' He mused.

Judging by the fact that he came out alone early in the morning implies a few things. One being that he didn't know about the different executives going after them; if he had, then he wouldn't have stepped outside alone this early. The other being that he's quite low ranked within the legacy clan.

A small curve appeared on the executive's face as he quickly hid behind one of the trees. Even though all of this is still in his favour, he still needs to be careful in his approach. As of current, there are more than five dozen visitors staying here, and that still doesn't take into account all of the Valor guards working day and night around the citadel.

He had to be careful in what he was about to do, and not make such noise to attract attention or else his cover would be blown.

As time passed, he continued to move through the woods in a zig-zag pattern, watching the target from a distance who was currently on the trail heading towards the docks. His breath is still steady as he rolls over to the tree beside him and peeks out from behind the trunk.

The target appeared to be a young man, perhaps around the age of twenty or so. He had brown wavy hair while wearing a standard shirt and trousers, with the emblem of the Pandavar clan on his shirt.

'It's a shame...' June pondered to himself. In truth, a part of him didn't want to kill the young man; humanity needed as many young and upcoming awakened as possible to survive in the age of the Spell. It was different from dealing with Awakened Barga, as the young man was lower ranked and probably didn't know about the darker dealings that his clan is involved in. Legacies tend to cover up their crimes easily in June's experience.

Still, what must be done will be done. This was a lesson that was passed down to him from his late grandfather all those years ago.

The image of the files Smiley had given him during the meeting briefly appeared in his mind. If it means stopping all those things from happening to more people, then he was more than willing to take out all of the Pandavar's members within Rivergate.

At that moment, he saw that the target had stopped moving and began to reach into his pocket.

Taking this brief moment of distraction, June quickly walked out of the woods where he was hiding and silently headed towards the young man. His eyes were cold as it was mechanical, each step carried a sense of purpose and yet were eerily silent. In his right hand, he gripped the handle of [Sleeping Malice] as he got closer to the Pandavar member.

The young man finally managed to get his pack of cigarettes from his pocket. It was decently difficult to find it, as his pocket was quite spacious, after all, the trousers are a custom memory, he requested for his 20th birthday.

Though just as he was about to light up a cigarette, he suddenly felt a deep and sharp pain in his chest. His white shirt contrasted by the ever-growing pool of crimson red.

In a panic state, he tried to scream. Scream louder than he ever has... Yet not a single sound came out of his mouth. His body collapsed to the ground, as his vision turned blurrier, then went dark.

"Geez Wolldier sure is taking his time outside."

Kwenzy laughed as he looked at Quiver with a smug smile. He placed down his cup of milk coffee before asking sarcastically.

"Should I head outside and look for him?"

Quiver, his superior, placed his fork down before establishing eye contact with him. Letting out a small sigh, the blonde shook his head before providing an answer.

"No, let Wolldier have his time outside. He would come back eventually. Though I do think that you should head back to your room to make sure everything is safe. Since you already finished with your breakfast after all.

Letting out a groan, Kwenzy stood up from his chair and stretched both hands, before heading to the hallway leading to the room where they have kept the 'Dusty stuff' that the higher up of the clan have provided them.

Though, midway through, he decided that it might be better to head towards his own room to collect the sample that he 'borrowed' yesterday to have a look. If Quiver found out that he took some of the stuff without his permission, then he would be in deep trouble.

Entering his room, he quickly looked under his bed and grabbed the bag of dust. Of course, he didn't take any of it in; he was unsure of the effect it might have.

Clunk Clunk—

"Huh? What was that?"

Kwenzy placed the small bag down on his bed and looked around for the source of the weird sound he had just heard.

'It seems that it was coming from the door...'

He thought to himself, as he walked towards the door and tried to open it to see if anyone was outside.

'Huh? Why isn't it opening?'

The door to his motel room was locked from the inside. In a state of panic, he looked around and tried to recall if anyone had followed him.

It's just then that a deep gash opened on both of his calves, causing him to fall and yell in pain. However, just as his mouth opened an unknown hand wearing a brown glove, suddenly extended out of the gloom and wrapped it arms around his mouth. Muffling his scream for help. After a while, he looked up to see the figure that had just ambushed him.

It was an overwhelming dread that rushed over Kwenzy at that moment. It was as if at that moment he wasn't on land but instead under the ocean grasping for air.

The figure was that of a tall human male, wearing a black bodysuit that was made out of a strange material and looked much more like a wet suit than any kind of garment that's worn under armour that most Awakened wear.

The ambusher's face was also covered by a strange beige bandage that wrapped around his face and arms, which somehow seemed to levitate at both ends. Only the figure's mouth was left uncovered.

The Hangman had arrived.
