The best thing about living in close quarters with strangers is that you get to watch the cracks form. The worst thing about it is when those cracks start to make you curious. I've learned that curiosity is a dangerous game here. It's why I usually keep my interest short-lived; poke a little, watch the reaction, then move on before I actually care.
Adrian Elowen was supposed to be one of those short-lived amusements.
From the moment he walked into the dorm, I could tell he wasn't built for this place. Not physically, though he's clearly human enough to be breakable, but in the way he carried himself. Always a fraction too still, shoulders a little too tight, eyes sharp but cautious, like someone who'd learned early that being noticed usually meant trouble. People like that either learn to fight or they fold. I was sure he'd fold.
