Chapter 1 - Personal Bodyguard

"Is this your justice, Neuvillette?"

"And Furina, you don't look like a god at all. You don't deserve it!"

Inside the Opera Epiclese courtroom, a middle-aged man with a black beard roared hysterically, his eyes blazing with fury at Neuvillette and Furina.

Startled by his shouting, Furina quickly darted behind a black-haired man.

"Lady Furina, please mind your image…" Leo, her personal guard, straightened stiffly, his body tense.

"He looked like he was about to hit me! Why should I care about my image? Leo, when we leave later, you are not allowed to run away. You must stick close to me—I'm afraid someone will attack me!"

With a stiff expression, Leo glanced at the man still howling in the defendant's box, then helplessly shifted his gaze toward Neuvillette on the judge's stand.

"Silence."

Neuvillette's voice rolled through the chamber, calm and absolute. "Since you admit to your crimes, I hereby declare you guilty."

The Hydro Chief Justice's words sealed the man's fate—he was destined to spend the rest of his life imprisoned in the Fortress of Meropide.

After the trial, Leo turned back and sighed at Furina, who was now hiding behind him once more—only this time, she was happily eating cake. He pressed his hand to his forehead.

"Lady Furina, if the citizens of Fontaine saw this, what would they think?"

"You're standing in front of me, so they can't see. Now hurry—go! The limited supply of cakes is almost sold out!"

Leo froze. A moment ago she had begged him for protection, and now she was ordering him to fetch dessert?

When he hesitated, Furina puffed her cheeks, put her hands on her hips, and turned away dramatically.

"What? You would dare ignore the orders of a god? Leo, you're growing far too arrogant!"

Leo could only sigh. There was no escaping it. If he didn't comply, Furina would throw a fit—and that would be far worse. He still remembered last month, when he failed to buy her a limited-edition cake. She hadn't spoken to him for an entire week.

She was supposed to be the Hydro Archon of Fontaine, yet she acted more like a spoiled girl!

When Leo left the Opera Epiclese, he ran into Neuvillette by chance. The Chief Justice offered him a faint smile.

"Mr. Leo, was Furina with you just now?"

Though Neuvillette didn't finish his sentence, Leo understood the unspoken meaning. He nodded, if only to save Furina some dignity. Both men smiled knowingly. Furina's personality was something they had all simply learned to adapt to.

From there, Leo headed straight to Fontaine's most famous dessert shop by boat. Despite being twenty years old and known for his strength—second only to Clorinde in last year's competition—his life had taken an unexpected turn. He once dreamed of becoming the bodyguard of his idol, Navia, but instead, he had been tricked by Furina into becoming hers.

And being Furina's "personal guard" came with rather… unusual duties. Not only did he defend her, he also fetched tea, stood in line for cakes and milk tea, did laundry, and even polished shoes. His work resembled that of a nanny more than a warrior.

By the time Leo arrived at the dessert shop, a long line had already formed. The store only sold ten servings per day of their limited cake. Normally, he would've had to queue like everyone else—but not when the cake was for Furina.

The waiter spotted him immediately and hurried over with a carefully wrapped package.

"Mr. Leo, please take Lady Furina's order. Otherwise… well, you know, the Fortress of Meropide might be in your future."

"…Right. I'll take it."

With desserts in hand, Leo returned to the Palais Mermonia to deliver them. If he was even slightly late, Furina would sulk, scold him, and refuse to speak to him for days.

He knocked on her chamber door. The sound of light footsteps rushed closer, and within moments, Furina flung the door open, snatched the desserts from him, and eagerly counted them. Once satisfied, she beamed, ready to indulge again.

Leo forced a trembling smile. "Lady Furina, if that will be all, I'll take my leave—"

Furina turned with a sly grin.

"No, no, you can't leave yet. Go and wash the laundry for me."

"…"

Resigned, Leo stepped inside and headed straight to the balcony. At least coats were easy enough to wash.

As he worked, he stole a glance back at Furina. Despite her earlier antics, she ate her cake with elegance, occasionally cupping her face or crossing her arms in charming little gestures. It was… oddly cute.

But remembering all her mischief—like the time she forced him to wash clothes until his hands were raw—Leo could only sigh. He even had a few of Furina's dresses hanging in his own quarters. Outrageous.

Noticing his stare, Furina turned sharply.

"Leo! How dare you peek at a god?"

Caught, Leo quickly turned away and focused on scrubbing. Neuvillette had advised him: just indulge her whims. Otherwise, she would make a scene every single day.

Though Leo had once resented the idea of being her servant, the salary Neuvillette offered was far too generous to refuse.

Once the laundry was done, he dried and hung the garments, wiped down the table, and finally looked over at Furina. To his surprise, she had set aside a slice of cake just for him—a small reward. For all her drama, she could be thoughtful at times.

Leo sat, ate the cake in three bites, and downed the coffee in two gulps. He stretched, feeling content.

Just then, Furina emerged from her room, her Seven Holy Summons deck in hand.

"You ate that so fast? Leo, can't you savor food properly?"

Her tone sounded stern, but the sparkle in her eyes betrayed her playful mood.

Scratching his head, Leo replied sheepishly, "That was me eating slowly. It was just too good. Lady Furina, is there any more?"

Satisfied by his answer, Furina smiled, set her hat aside, and untied her ribbon.

"Then come—play Seven Holy Summons with me. You don't have anything better to do."

"Yes, Lady Furina."

The two spent the entire afternoon playing cards until dinnertime.

Gods were not meant to require meals, but Furina always insisted on three per day, each with a unique menu. Naturally, Leo became her cook. Though he hadn't known the first thing about cooking before, he had been forced into culinary classes under Neuvillette's orders. Now, he was Furina's personal chef.

That evening, Leo sliced vegetables, grilled steak, and prepared milk tea—Furina's requested dinner. Of course, she constantly snuck into the kitchen, stealing fruit and meat while accusing him of being too slow. Her teasing left Leo feeling utterly helpless.

At the dining table, she ate with graceful poise, while Leo simply sat across, watching. Whenever he cooked, Furina would deliberately feed him bites in her own way—usually messy and playful—before eating the rest herself.

When she caught him staring, she exaggerated her elegance, as if showing off. Leo could only shake his head, fiddling with his unused deck of cards. How had he lost every match that afternoon? His luck couldn't be that bad.

After clearing the table and cleaning the dishes, Leo finally prepared to leave. But just as he was about to step outside, Furina tied her hair back, put on her hat, and blocked his way.

"Don't go! Come with me to feed the kittens and puppies."

Leo froze, utterly defeated. He just wanted to go home.

But the will of the Hydro Archon could not be refused.
