Chapter 89: The Livestream of Social Death
As Satoru Gojo finished his explanation, Kasumi Miwa felt a heavy weight settle in her chest, followed by a bittersweet relief. With Gojo handling the communication with the Shinto higher-ups, that hungry shrine wouldn't be claiming any more innocent souls from the streets of Tokyo.
Yet, the thought of the elderly priests and shrine maidens sacrificing their lifespans to maintain the seal left a sour taste in her mouth. "Couldn't they just... exorcise the monster?" she wondered aloud.
She immediately shook her head. What was she thinking? If the great Inari God of legend could only manage a seal, and if the Jujutsu world struggled even to destroy Sukuna's severed fingers, what chance did modern sorcerers have?
As she walked out of the gates of Tokyo Jujutsu High, her Diary vibrated with a sharp notification.
[Quest Completed: Investigate the Truth of Three Fox Valley Shrine] Completion Rate: 25% (Minimum qualification reached). Note: As this quest was intercepted from another Diary holder, subsequent chain tasks are disabled. Rewards: Reading Value issued. Item reward placed in your room.
Kasumi froze, her face flushing with a renewed surge of guilt. She hadn't expected the quest to register as "complete" just by talking to Gojo. The realization that she had technically "stolen" a mission from an unknown girl she had never even met made her skin crawl with embarrassment.
"I'm so sorry! I really didn't mean it!" Kasumi whispered frantically, bowing and pressing her hands together toward every cardinal direction. "If I knew who you were, I'd give you all the points!"
Unfortunately, the Diary remained silent on the identity of her victim. Holding her breath, she could only hope her next mission wouldn't involve poaching from her "seniors" again.
Meanwhile, in his villa in Mihana Town, Renji Miyauchi was leaning back in his chair, watching the drama unfold through Mashiro's shared chat logs. Suddenly, his Master Diary flickered with a brand-new system prompt.
[System Event: Failure Settlement] Target: Kaguya Shinomiya is about to receive punishment for a failed quest. Option: Does the Host wish to upload the scene of the punishment to the public Diary feed?
Renji perked up instantly, a mischievous glint in his eyes. Remote gossip was fine, but a front-row seat to the "Ice Queen's" embarrassment was too good to pass up.
"Sorry, Kaguya," Renji chuckled, tapping the 'Agree' button. "But the people need their entertainment."
The girls holding Diaries had already grown accustomed to using them as high-tech tablets—mind-link search engines and instant communicators that made modern smartphones look like stone tools. But they had never seen a live-streaming function.
Until now.
[System Announcement: At the request of the Diary Owner, the punishment for Kaguya Shinomiya's quest failure will now be live-streamed to all holders.]
"Wait, what?"
Across Japan—in classrooms, hospital beds, and rehearsal rooms—screens flickered to life. The feed displayed a close-up of Kaguya Shinomiya's increasingly nervous face.
The chat group exploded.
Black Cat: "Didn't she just enroll in Jujutsu High? Why the failure notice?" Miko (typing frantically from the car): "The A-rank quest for the Three Fox Valley Shrine was intercepted! Someone finished it before she could even accept it!"
A collective gasp rippled through the digital space. The girls knew that shrine was a death trap. Who among the "new batch" was strong enough to solve a Grade 1 mystery in forty-eight hours? A Special Grade? Or something worse?
As they speculated, the "Livestream" reached its climax. Kaguya's eyes began to lose their sharp, calculating edge, becoming wide and "clear."
Black Cat recognized it immediately. It's 'Little Kaguya.' According to Hayasaka, this rare state only occurred when Kaguya was pushed to a breaking point of stress, joy, and exhaustion. Usually, Kaguya paid hush money to keep this side of her secret. Now, it was being broadcasted to her entire social circle.
"I guess seeing her own 'foolish' side is the ultimate punishment for someone as proud as Kaguya," Ruri Gokou mused, though she felt a tiny bit of pity.
On screen, Little Kaguya stared blankly for a full minute before her lower lip began to tremble. Suddenly, she burst into tears, completely disregarding her noble image.
"I want to go to school! I want to see Chika!" she wailed.
The veteran driver, a man who had survived actual battlefields, nearly swerved into a ditch. "M-mistress! What's wrong?!"
No matter how he pleaded, Kaguya just kept crying for Fujiwara Chika. Panicked, the driver pulled over and called Ai Hayasaka.
"She's in that state again? In a car with a guest?" Hayasaka's voice over the phone sounded like she was mourning her own sanity. "Take her to school. I'm leaving now to intercept her. I'll have to switch to my student disguise."
In the back seat, Miko Yotsuya was doing her best to play the role of a big sister. She realized with a pang of guilt that if she had unlocked quests earlier, this A-rank task would have been hers. Kaguya had effectively "taken the bullet" for her.
Miko began telling fairy tales to soothe the crying girl, even acting out the characters—all while knowing the other girls were watching her perform a puppet show in a luxury sedan.
"This is social suicide for both of us," Miko whispered.
Half an hour later, the car screeched to a halt at the gates of Shuchiin Academy. Ai Hayasaka, already in her blonde "Gyaru" student persona, was waiting.
Before Hayasaka could utter a word, a Q-version Kaguya launched herself out of the car and into her maid's arms. "Hayasaka-saka!"
Because of her Ripple training, Kaguya's physical strength was massive. Hayasaka's face visibly distorted as the wind was knocked out of her, but she maintained her professional composure, stroking Kaguya's hair.
"I need to see Chika! Now!" Kaguya demanded.
"Miss Chika is in class, Little Kaguya. Can we wait?" Hayasaka tried to reason.
"No! Now!"
Miko followed them inside, fascinated despite her embarrassment. Shuchiin was a fortress of the elite. She scanned the hallways and noticed something strange: there were almost zero vengeful spirits here. Is there a permanent barrier? Or a specialized exorcist on the payroll? she wondered.
They reached the classroom. Hayasaka entered first to negotiate with the teacher, but Little Kaguya had zero patience. She ripped her hand away from Miko and dashed inside.
Fujiwara Chika was daydreaming about lunch when she saw a frantic Hayasaka enter the room. Behind her, a wide-eyed, innocent-looking Kaguya burst in, her face lighting up the moment she spotted her best friend.
"Mama Chika~!" Kaguya squealed, sprinting toward the shocked pink-haired girl.
The classroom fell into a silence so profound you could hear a pin drop. On the other side of Tokyo, Utaha Kasumigaoka was busy taking screenshots with a predatory grin.
"The Mysterious Person is a devil," Utaha thought, "but these receipts are going to make recruitment so much easier."
