Chapter 9: Renka and the Junior Detective League

She must have driven into the rich district.

On one side were steel skyscrapers, and on this side stood rows of detached villas and Western-style houses. The Miyauchi home in Asahigaoka covered maybe five or six hundred square meters, but here each estate—including its courtyard—looked to be more than a thousand.

Kazuho Miyauchi muttered to herself, My little brother couldn't possibly have bought a house in a place like this. No way. It has to be an ordinary detached home or an apartment nearby.

But when the navigation system announced they had arrived, she stopped the car and looked to her right. There it was—a luxuriously decorated Western-style mansion.

"Mihana Town… 2-chome… 23-banchi…" she whispered, matching the address Renji Miyauchi had given her. Then she heard him waking Kouka. "Kouka, don't sleep. We're here."

Kazuho stared silently at her brother. Their parents, too, looked around in bewilderment. They had assumed he might buy a small home at most, but this was far beyond their imagination. For country folk like them, this mansion seemed almost unreal.

Under their suspicious gazes, Renji scratched his cheek and grinned. "Honestly, I was shocked too when I found out. Anyway, I've already arranged things—someone's waiting for us inside. Let's bring in the luggage first."

He pulled open the iron gate and stepped into the courtyard, leading the way. Kouka trailed behind groggily, still half-asleep.

At the front door, a butler in a tuxedo waited. He had served this house for over a decade, and the diary's reward had even included his contact details. He bowed, then guided them inside with impeccable etiquette.

In the lavish reception room, Kouka finally woke up completely. Her scream of disbelief echoed through the halls. Thankfully, the soundproofing was excellent—Dr. Agasa next door wouldn't be disturbed.

By lunchtime, the Miyauchi family had calmed down somewhat. Their parents were already discussing what to plant in the courtyard. Kazuho relaxed in the garden with Renka. Kouka, meanwhile, ran from room to room, fantasizing about life as a noble Tokyo girl—maids, chefs, and limousines.

Renji quickly cut those dreams short. "I've already contacted a real estate agent. Once school starts, you'll live in an apartment for convenience. This house isn't for that."

Kouka's jaw dropped. Why was her younger brother so heartless? But Renji simply pulled out his wallet, waved five crisp 10,000-yen bills, and placed them in her hand. "Your pocket money. You'll live in the apartment on weekdays, visit here on holidays, and keep quiet at school about our family. Deal?"

Her pout melted. Pocket money plus the promise of shopping trips in Shibuya and Ginza made the arrangement suddenly appealing. Maybe being an ordinary Tokyo high school girl wasn't so bad after all.

Satisfied, Renji turned his attention back to the house. From the window, he glanced at the aging Kudo residence nearby, then at Dr. Agasa's well-fortified home. Finally, his eyes fell on the courtyard gate.

Renka was chatting politely with several children about her age. Renji's expression stiffened. A headband-wearing girl, a thin boy, a chubby boy—and a bespectacled child watching quietly from behind. Cold sweat formed on his brow.

Really, Renka? Of all people, you had to befriend the Junior Detective League?

He thought about rushing downstairs to pull her away. Conan himself wasn't dangerous, but the others—Ayumi Yoshida, Genta Kojima, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya—had a knack for walking straight into peril. They were more familiar with corpses than with their own families.

Yet barging in might draw unwanted attention. Better to watch from nearby. Still, he needed an excuse to introduce himself. Rifling through his luggage, he gathered some Asahigaoka produce and fruit meant as gifts. Adjusting his expression with a touch of Ripple control, he stepped outside.

Ayumi was already regaling Renka with a story about escaping a kidnapping, solemnly warning her to be careful around bad people. Renji nearly groaned aloud. Ayumi, you hold the record for most kidnappings in all of Tokyo. Do you even hear yourself?

Seeing Renka's serious little nod, Renji intervened quickly. "You're all neighbors, right? Want some fruit?"

The offer worked wonders. Genta and Mitsuhiko happily accepted, munching without hesitation. Ayumi thanked him sweetly. In minutes, they had introduced themselves and shared their hobbies. Only Conan frowned, wary as always.

Renji smiled calmly. "So, you're all going to visit Dr. Agasa? What a coincidence. I'm Renji Miyauchi, just moved here from Saitama. This is my sister, Renka. Mind if we join you?"

Before Conan could object, the Junior Detective League cheered their approval. Renka's eyes shone with excitement. She wanted to share her countryside stories with her new friends.

Renji patted her head. "Then let's go together."

As they waited at Dr. Agasa's door, Conan stole a glance at Renji, suspicion flickering in his sharp eyes.
