Chapter 4 - First day at school

After the entrance ceremony's abrupt ending, each students were sent to their respective classes.

On their way outside the hall, Keiichi suddenly asked.

"What class are you in bro?"

"Class 1-A"

Keiichi had a look of disappointment on his face.

"I'm in class 1-C, I guess we will see each other around. By the way what class do you have?"

"Hold on let me check."

Satoru had already received his course of study hand out but he hasn't read it yet.

Tsukimori usually has six periods. Four periods in the morning and two more in the afternoon. The entrance ceremony took the entire first period and a good portion of the second period hence, they were skipped.

Satoru's eyes widened in astonishment when he saw the contents of the schedule.

Controlling supernatural powers, supernatural powers in daily lives, supernatural powers in combat, superhuman theories. These subjects were plastered all over his curriculum with less than half of the classes involving regular subjects.

This school is tailor made for superhumans after all!

His astonishment instantly fades the moment he saw his next period.

"I got history and it's a double period"

Said the disappointed Satoru.

"Bruh that sucks"

Before the boys knew it, they were already in front of class 1-C.

"I guess I have to go now. Your classroom should be at the end of this hallway. I'll see you later."

"Thanks, Bye!"

Not long after waving goodbye to keiichi, Satoru arrived at his own class.

There were 20 seats inside the room with 4 rows and 5 seats per row.

Satoru's seat was assigned to the second seat from the back on the window side row.

Although he preferred the seat at the very back, he wouldn't complain since he still had access to the window.

Students were talking to each other in groups. Some of them seem to already know each other while others eagerly try to make new connections within the class.

The atmosphere here is very lively just like his previous school. Something he didn't expect to see from a top tier school.

But not everyone is interested in socializing.

At the corner of the room on the seat right behind Satoru's seat was a tiny foreign girl napping peacefully with her school bag in her arms.

She has long blonde hair tied into twin tails. The way she cuddles with her bag reminds Satoru of stray kittens huddling together.

Class is about to start… should I wake her up?

After a moment's hesitation, Satoru thought he should give it a shot since there is nothing to lose.

He slowly waved his hand in front of her face, afraid that touching her directly would startle her.

.

The girl still continues sleeping.

That's weird. Maybe she is in a deep sleep?

While Satoru is pondering for a different way, girl's voice rang in his ear.

"What are you doing?"

Satoru turned to see a pair of pitch black eyes, at less than 20 centimeters away from his face, staring at him intently.

Because his attention was solely focused on the sleeping girl, the sudden approach startled him he almost jumped in fright.

"Why did you flinch like you just saw a ghost?" The same voice added in a playfully.

Satoru finally got a good look at the newcomer.

It was a short haired girl. She exuded a confident demeanor, further displayed by the colorful accessories she wore.

What caught Satoru's attention was her hair, specifically its bright blue color. He had never heard of supernatural powers changing a person's appearance before.

"Hello-? Are you there?"

Satoru snapped out of his trance and replied.

"Yeah- sorry. I spaced out."

"Your face looks like someone who just had a nice long monologue… Anyways is there anything interesting going on here?"

"Nothing much. Class is going to start soon and this girl is still sleeping so I figured I would wake her up before it starts."

"Hmm… let me see."

The blue hair girl inspected the blonde girl before nudging her.

"Wakey wakey."

After her first attempt failed, she gradually puts more and more energy in each time at one point it looks like she straight up shoving the blonde girl back and forth. Still, the blode girl remains in deep slumber.

"Should we just leave her be?"

Satoru's suggestion was met with protest.

"We can't! What if she gets caught sleeping by the teacher?"

"I'm sure she will be fine-"

"Think of the last time a teacher caught you spacing out like earlier."

The blue haired girl's words struck Satoru like thunder. He could clearly remember before he dropped out of school how scary teachers can be when they catch students (mostly him) slacking off.

With renewed determination, Satoru swore he would not let anybody else suffer a teacher's wrath under his watch.

The duo racked their brains, trying to come up with a good alternative.

The blue haired girl's face lit up as if her mind formed a brilliant idea.

"Water bucket-"

"NOPE! ANYTHING BUT THAT!" Satoru quickly shut that thought down.

That's way worse than being woken up by a teacher.

Hmm…

"Things would be a hundred times easier of we could just call her using her name." Satoru lampooned.

"We can actually."

"Do you know her?"

"I don't."

"Then how are we going to ask her name when she is asleep?"

"That."

The blue pointed toward the name tag on the table.

Every seat is preassigned by the school so they all come along with name tags.

Why didn't I think of this earlier? Satoru thought so as he looked at the name on the desk.

Yukime Midori.

A surprisingly common Japanese name. Despite her foreign look, this girl seems to have Japanese heritage.

"Wake up Yukime san! The teacher will be here any moment now."

The blue haired girl tried to wake up the sleeping girl once more but she still failed to get a reaction.

"How is she still sleeping?" The blue haired girl complained.

"Maybe it has something to so with her supernatural ability?" Satoru suggested.

"Supernatural ability?"

"Yeah- it could be some sort of drawback."

"A drawback?"

"This is how I call the feeling you experience after using your ability too much. Haven't you reached your limit before?"

"I haven't, my ability consumes gunpowder for every use so I don't get to use it very often let alone, until I reach my limit."

Gunpowder? That sounds very dangerous. I wonder what kind of ability does she have? Satoru looked at her anxiously.

Ignoring his reaction, the blue haired girl asked.

"Anyways, what should we do now? If she is really asleep because of her ability, then we have no way of waking her up."

"I think we should check her pulse-"

Smack

"You pervert!"

"OW! What was that for?"

"You're shameless! I never thought you would stoop so low as to grope a girl at her most vulnerable moment."

"Isn't there a way to check her pulse by grabbing the wrist? besides, I didn't say that I will be the one doing it~"

"You sound disappointed."

"I do not!"

The blue haired girl turned away and dramatically muttered.

"So this is why we are trying to wake her up. I should have backed off when I had the chance-"

"THIS IS YOU IDEA!"

Suddenly.

"Fwaah~~"

They heard a soft yawning voice.

Besides them, the blonde girl who was previously sleeping is now awake, stretching herself after her short nap.

Noticing their gazes, she looked up at the duo with her green eyes filled with drowsiness and confusion.

The duo yelled out in unison.

"SHE'S AWAKE!"

"!?"

A few moments later.

"SORRY!"

Both Satoru and the blue haired girl were bowing their heads deeply in front of a flustered young girl.

"I- It's alright…"

Midori answered in a flustered voice.

The foreign girl, Midori's demeanor is the exact opposite of the blue haired girl. She is extremely shy and gets flustered easily. In fact, she almost had a mini heart attack just now.

To be fair, that was a completely valid reaction after getting jump-scared by two strangers right after waking up.

All three of them sat in awkward silence until the blue haired girl spoke up.

"By the way Yukime san."

"Y-Yes!?"

"I was wondering if you have any health conditions? You were in such a deep sleep you wouldn't wake up no matter how hard we shook you."

Midori hurriedly explained.

"No- that's not it. I travel a lot because of dad's work… I often have to sleep during bumpy car rides. S-So I got used to sleeping while being tossed around."

So that's how it is. Satoru started to put two and two together.

Being yanked around didn't wake her up at all, instead it ended up reminding her of those car rides, making her sleep even deeper.

But something doesn't add up.

"Earlier it seemed like you didn't hear us when we called you?"

"Oh- I have these on."

She pulled out a pair of wireless earbuds from her shirt.

Right- for someone to sleep in a noisy place it's normal to use earplugs or something similar to filter out some noise. We should've checked for those earlier.

Midori's emerald eyes darted back and forth between the two. She mustered her courage to ask.

"Uhh- if it doesn't bother you… may I know your names?"

Midori's comment indirectly made Satoru realize how awkward this conversation had been. From her point of view, we look like two strangers picking on her.

"My name is Hoshina Satoru. My seat is right in front of yours so I will be in your care."

"And my n-"

The blue haired girl's introduction was interrupted when someone walked into the

"Settle down everyone."

An aged voice echoed throughout the entire room, its commanding tone made the entire classroom, including Satoru's group, stop talking momentarily to look towards the source of the voice.

A senior man about the same height as Keiichi dressed in a navy blue suit and a necktie of the same color. He has a stern look on his face. His hair has turned completely white with no trace of its original color remaining. His brown eyes are extraordinarily sharp in contrast to his age.

He holds a cane in his right hand which he uses to support himself while walking.

"Uwah! The teacher is here I gotta go!" The blue haired girl exclaimed.

Satoru watched the girl's parting figure with slight regret. She is very easy to talk to, especially for someone he met for the first time. It's a pity he didn't get to know her name

Their seats aren't close to each other so they won't have any opportunity to chat during class. At least Satoru could at least rejoice on the fact that he had made friends with two cute girls less than two hours after enrolling in a new school.

His attention focused backed on the aged man who had just reached the teacher's desk. The man's movements seem awkward especially the extreme stiffness within his right leg.

He greeted the students in a gentlemanly manner.

"Allow me to introduce myself."

"My name is Akai Tetsuya. From today onwards I will be your homeroom teacher as well as your teacher for all superhuman related subjects."

The expressions of students turned odd.

The found it difficult to believe that an old teacher who struggles to walk properly would be the one to teach them about the world of super humans.

"Since today is our first time meeting let's start off with the basics."

"I assume you all know about the first recorded supernatural incident on earth."

One of the students raised her hand.

"The parallel world incident?"

"That's right."

Without wasting any time, Tetsuya sensei started his lecture.

The parallel world incident.

It is the first and the most important of three large scale supernatural incidents that happened on before the third world war.

This incident happened on November 22nd 2025. Several people living in highly populated cities across the world mysteriously disappeared in a small time frame.

The victims were transported to another world different from ours, one filled with swords and magic, just like a casual isekai novel.

The purpose of the summoning was to allegedly participate in the war against the demonic race. Though any information about the war itself is really unreliable. Each traveler's experience and news channels are very different from one another. Even worse, the incident took place in the middle of the era of misinformation. It is very common to find misinformation spread from people who seek unnecessary internet attention.

Satoru's eyelids felt heavy. It can't be helped since most of the parallel world incident discussed in this class was something he already knew. It is already taught in middle school history lessons.

If it weren't for the sound of the girl behind him furiously scribbling down notes on her notebook, Satoru would have long been asleep.

Why would she need to write down so much anyway?

"Excuse me teacher."

"Yes?"

"I'm sorry if I sound rude but I believe we already knew… about… this..."

Tetsuya's cold glare sent a chill down that student's spine.

"If you already know everything then you wouldn't mind if I test your knowledge right?"

Without leaving any room to breathe, Tetsuya ruthlessly

"How many types of supernatural abilities are there?"

"Which kind of ability is the most commonly found within humans?"

"What is the definition of a demonic being?"

Overwhelmed by Tetsuya's barrage of questions, the student voluntarily backed down.

"If you don't know everything then don't try to act like you do."

"Yes… sensei."

Tetsuya glanced around the class.

"By now you all are probably thinking. 'All of those questions are about superhumans how is it even related to history class?' Am I right?"

"Supernatural power…or what we will be calling it for now, used not exist in our world. That is until 200 years ago, almost a century after this parallel world incident. This new power completely defies the logic of our world. If we were to manually research it by ourselves, it would take hundreds or even thousands of years."

"The reason we understood it so quickly lies in history. The way our supernatural abilities work from its use to the way it gets classified all the way its side effects on the user, every thing we possess right now match the power our ancestors once possessed in the other world, albeit on a weaker level."

Tetsuya continues on with his lecture.

"There are two main theories on how superhumans emerge. First, the gate that transfers between the world has also transferred the magical energy from that world towards our own. Second, our ancestors who went to that world carries the energy from that world and the energy itself gets released after their death."

Another student asked.

"Which one do you think is true, sensei?"

Tetsuya shrugged.

"I don't think it is either of them."

"If the first theory is true then why doesn't it appear during the gate but more than eighty years later?"

"If the second theory is true then why do the very people who brought the supernatural powers here not have access to it but we do?"

"There isn't a logical explanation for why it took so long for supernatural powers to emerge. Although, I personally think that the delay not an accident but a calculated move made by some force that us humans can't comprehend yet."

Tetsuya's voice placed an emphasis on [yet].

"Sensei, do you think the stray sage really exists?" A student asked.

"I can't say for certain, but from what I know, I am more inclined to believe he does." Tetsuya paused before adding. "If he really does, I wouldn't be surprised everything up until now is his doing…"

"Always remember, free things cost the most."

"Alright, class is dismissed."

Almost instantaneously after Tetsuya dismissed the class, the buzzing sound of the lunch bell echoed throughout the classroom.

The class was so absorbed in the lesson they didn't realize it is already break time.

"Akai sensei is very scary isn't he?"

"Yeah, but he is also very passionate."

"Hey! What do you guys want for lunch?"

The once quiet classroom is now filled with chatter from students. Some discussing about the previous lesson while others chatted about what they would have for their next meal.

Satoru originally wanted to find the blue haired girl to talk to during the lunch time but before he could go invite her, he was blocked by a flock of students rushing out of the classroom, trying to be the first to reach the cafeteria. Before he knew it, most of the class including the blue haired girl was gone.

Aren't you guys getting a little too excited for just school lunch..? Satoru lampooned inwardly.

With the blue haired girl gone, he turned to chat with the only other person he somewhat knows in this class, the foreign girl, Midori.

"Hey- Do you want to go grab lunch?"

"I'm fine. I still have leftovers from breakfast."

She pulled out her lunch box from her bag.

The box contains some rice balls, tamagoyagi and kamboko. It is pretty similar to a normal ekiben sold near train stations, a comfort meal for travelers.

"Alright, then I'm off."

After waving goodbye to Midori, Satoru wasn't in a hurry to head to the cafeteria. Instead, he took a huge detour toward the baseball field.

His pace is very slow, as if he didn't care if he missed lunch. His mind recalled those times when he was still in middle school before he dropped out… to those abominations labeled "lunch".

Just the thought of it sent chills down his spine.

"Oi, lad."

"Those rooms are out of commission right now."

As Satoru approaches the cafeteria, he froze on his tracks. His nose picking up a certain scent.

The strong, fragrant aroma of food rushed into Satoru's nose making his mouth water unconsciously.

And the source of that smell was none other than the cafeteria itself.

"Woah~"

The food here looks nothing like the meal served in his previous school.

A passing senior seemed to seemed to sense Satoru's shock and came over to explain.

"Looking at that empty hand, you must be new here, boy. A large portion of students and teachers in our school are important figures, so they invested a lot in quality of life stuff. The food here is all made by top tier chefs. Us common folk also get the same treatment."

"Top tier chefs..?" Satoru couldn't believe his ears.

No wonder why the other students rushed out of the class so quickly.

Having the ability to choose my own meal without being nagged about eating vegetables feels so good.

Maybe coming to this school isn't a bad choice after all… Satoru thought to himself.

After circling around the cafeteria a few times Satoru settled on having ramen as his lunch.

Suddenly, Satoru noticed a problem.

All the tables near him are practically full and there is just a little over 15 minutes left on break time!

He had spent too much time finding himself the perfect lunch he had accidentally lost track of time.

Right now he has no where to sit and eating such a huge bowl of ramen while standing doesn't seem realistic at all especially with Satoru's strength.

Maybe I should just squeeze in a random table…?

Just as that thought crossed Satoru's mind a particular table at the very edge of the cafeteria caught his attention.
