Chapter 4 - Chapter 3: Zombie Virus

"Huh?"

Lv Bai tore a slit in the fabric of his pants at the thigh.

Looking at the wound that was supposed to be a bloody mess, now miraculously healed, his eyes inevitably flashed with a clear confusion.

Initially, when he couldn't feel pain, he thought he was simply numb from it.

But upon closer inspection, he discovered that there wasn't even a bite mark on his thigh.

Only the gradually drying bloodstains on his pants remained to remind him that being bitten wasn't an illusion.

Seeing this, he uncertainly raised his hand and touched his neck.

As expected, the wound on his neck had self-healed just like his thigh.

"Super-speed Regeneration?"

He hadn't forgotten that he had chosen [Super-speed Regeneration (Gold)] in the Ability Pool, but he hadn't placed much hope in it.

After all, it was his first encounter with such supernatural power, and he hadn't verified it before, making it difficult to willingly consider it.

He pursed his lips and stood up, leaning on the Eight-sided Han Sword.

Turning his head towards the direction of the playground, his gaze seemed to pierce through the old banyan tree, seeing the situation on the playground clearly: "What a pleasant surprise indeed."

...

The school's main gate is on the other side of the playground.

After leaving the corner by the old banyan tree, Lv Bai chose not to force his way through the playground but returned to the teaching building along the original path.

After all, the zombie outbreak happened just as school was letting out at noon, and the playground was bustling with people.

Even though Lv Bai knew he had the ability of Super-speed Regeneration, facing the zombies wandering all over the playground, he was still overwhelmed.

Compared to forcibly breaking through the horde of zombies, finding a chance to climb the wall from behind the teaching building and leave the school seemed much more reliable.

The teaching building, first-floor restroom.

Whoosh~

Lv Bai stared blankly at the mirror above the sink, somewhat dazed.

The face in the mirror was extremely handsome, with sword-like eyebrows and eyes like stars.

Or maybe it was due to being a Taoist priest for a lifetime in his previous existence, carrying a somewhat ethereal aura.

After a brief wash, he appeared even more refreshed.

Squeak~

Turning the faucet off again, he let out a long breath.

"Young people are still young... Ugh..."

He was halfway through his words when sudden, intense pain surged from his head to his limbs.

The indescribable, intense pain came crashing in waves like a tide, making every part of his body and even each cell feel an uncontrollable wail.

Thud!

His entire body collapsed to the ground uncontrollably, and his limbs gradually began to twitch unconsciously.

At this moment, Lv Bai's consciousness remained clear, as he desperately tried to suppress the tremors of his body.

Thump~ Thump~

He felt his heartbeat become extremely prominent, while his vision grew increasingly blurred.

Through his previous observation of that delinquent boy, Lv Bai quickly realized what was happening to his body.

But this realization left him powerless.

The zombie virus!

The self-healing of the bite wounds had made Lv Bai instinctively overlook this crucial point.

The infectious nature of zombies is their most terrifying aspect.

Veins bulged on Lv Bai's forehead, twisting his expression into a ferocious one.

He wasn't planning on giving up.

There was still hope.

If he remembered correctly, the description of [Super-speed Regeneration] was a cellular-level self-healing ability.

So theoretically, this ability should be effective against the zombie virus as well.

As long as he didn't lose consciousness and become fully zombie-fied, he shouldn't be eliminated.

It's just uncertain how long this process would continue.

Recalling the speed at which his wounds had healed earlier, Lv Bai felt quite uneasy, and could only grit his teeth and endure.

One minute, two minutes...

No room for thought, his brain went blank.

Under seemingly endless pain, later on, Lv Bai didn't even know how long had passed, completely losing track of time.

His mind was muddled, seeming only a stone's throw away from the complete loss of consciousness.

Fortunately, just as Lv Bai was on the verge of giving up, the pain spanning his entire body suddenly vanished without a trace.

His breathing slowly became even.

Whether it was from being tortured by pain for too long or some other reason, Lv Bai felt remarkably good now.

It seemed his strength had increased compared to before?

And not just the sense of power surging through his body.

He could even clearly hear the suppressed breathing in the corner stall of the restroom.

Hmm...

Hmm?

There was actually someone else hiding in the restroom?

"Classmate? Want to come out and talk?"

Lv Bai said as he climbed up from the ground, staring at the locked door of the corner stall, smiling nonchalantly.

If they don't come out, they don't come out.

After all, whether one chooses to remain human or become a zombie is a personal choice, and it's not something others can interfere with.

No longer focused on the introverted survivor.

He tore a strip from his school uniform jacket, wrapping it around the lower end of the guard of the Eight-sided Han Sword, strapping the sword onto his back, tying the ends of the strip in front.

After finishing his preparations, Lv Bai's seemingly determined movements suddenly froze.

To be honest, he really had no idea what he should do at the moment.

He could pretty much confirm that this was a "game," and even if he was torn apart by zombies, he would merely be eliminated, likely not truly die.

But the question was, when would this game end? What were the conditions for winning?

Regarding these questions, although he wasn't completely clueless, he was not far from it.

He glanced at the data panel in front of his retinas.

[Current Points: 1]

[Current ranking: 31/384]

According to normal game logic...

"In any case, try to live as long as possible?" Lv Bai pondered thoughtfully.

Just as he was muttering to himself, he suddenly noticed shuffling footsteps outside the restroom corridor, seemingly attracted by his earlier voice.

Lv Bai slowed his breathing.

His hearing was exceptionally sharp right now, easily distinguishing that the footsteps came from two zombies.

One on the left and one on the right, about ten meters from the restroom entrance.

And the footsteps were still approaching.

Lv Bai bent slightly, his toes slowly brushing against the ground.

Although it was still uncertain to what extent his body had been enhanced by the zombie virus,

however...

Lv Bai suddenly stomped, using the powerful recoil to launch himself out of the restroom entrance like a fierce tiger.

In the process, his right hand had already raised to grip the sword hilt behind him.

Unleash the blade!

Thud~ thud~

The sword light flashed, and two zombie heads with gray-white eye sockets fell to the ground in response.

The blood spurting from the necks of the two zombies splashed onto the corridor walls, forming a radial pattern of gore.

One head rolled twice on the ground, revealing a still-confused expression on its face.

"...Can't let you draw more zombies."

Lv Bai glanced at the two corpses, flicking the blood off the sword: "But it seems they're quite ill."

He could sense that there wasn't a trace of tension within himself, almost wanting to laugh instead.

His decisiveness scared even himself.

...

Speaking of which, the restroom in the teaching building is always at the far right on every floor.

Moreover, there are stairs on both sides of the teaching building, so going upstairs doesn't require risking the zombie-filled corridors.

Lv Bai certainly wouldn't intentionally make things harder for himself,

He peeked out from the corner to survey, and there were no longer any living people visible in the corridor, only zombies wandering around.

Fading bloodstains were visible all over the corridor, especially those blood handprints on the white walls, which stood out significantly.

Without disturbing the zombies in the corridor and classrooms, Lv Bai quickly dashed onto the stairs.

The stairway could at most accommodate four people walking side by side.

In such a narrow area, getting blocked could easily lead to being bitten.

For safety, Lv Bai slowed his steps, ascending the stairs carefully.

As he turned the corner of the stairway, a silhouette appeared before him.

It was a female student, as her body swayed, the horrifying teeth marks on her calf caused the flesh to churn simultaneously.

Lv Bai quietly apologized, intending to rush up the remaining ten steps to quickly deal with her.

However, these zombies had extremely sharp hearing, and the urgent footsteps startled the female student.

She suddenly turned around, her face with protruding veins showed a beast-like fierceness.

Not good!

Lv Bai's heart skipped a beat.

The female student didn't disappoint, letting out a sharp roar and lunging at him clawing and biting.

Lv Bai wasn't worried that this zombie could harm him.

What was truly concerning was how many zombies might be drawn by this "girl's" loud roar.

The building had eight floors, each floor with seven classrooms.

Even though most students were at the cafeteria when the outbreak happened.

Still, assembling a few hundred zombies was like child's play.

Simply put,

Can't be blocked on the stairs!

Lv Bai reacted quickly.

He crouched down, swinging his sword upward.

While dodging the female zombie's pounce, he precisely struck the center of her forehead.

The sharpness of the Eight-sided Han Sword truly proved itself.

He felt barely any pressure on his wrist, and the zombie's body split into two halves.

Though right now wasn't the time to praise the sword.

The sounds of massive zombie chaos already reached his ears.

He gripped the blood-stained sword, running up the stairs in three quick strides,

Turning his gaze toward the hallway on the second floor, dozens of furious zombies surged towards him, pressing against each other.

Bam! Bam! Bam!

Zombies crashed through classroom windows, even spraining their ankles, still roaring and charging at him.

The chaotic footsteps from downstairs meant the option of returning was eliminated.

Seeing this mini "zombie horde" form almost instantly, Lv Bai had no intention of slicing through them.

Taking advantage before the encirclement formed, he quickly turned and ran upward.

Approaching the third floor, he saw three zombies appear at the staircase.

To avoid being blocked in such a confined stairway, Lv Bai unhesitatingly threw the Eight-sided Han Sword, following it like an arrow released from the string.

The middle zombie was instantly pierced through the skull.

Thanks to the zombie virus enhancing his physical abilities, Lv Bai's burst speed wasn't much slower than the sword. He swiftly extended his hands, pressing on the foreheads of the zombies on either side.

Then suddenly exerted force, smashing their heads onto the steps.

Ignoring their lives, he picked up the Eight-sided Han Sword and rushed to the third floor.

What was despairing was that the third floor wasn't much better than the second.

In the hallway, zombies scrambled to rush at Lv Bai, fearing they couldn't get a bite of the fresh meat.

Can't stop here.

Just as Lv Bai planned to turn back and continue escaping upstairs...

Thud~

Just three meters away, a security door marked "Office" was pushed open halfway.

A girl with delicate features watched him anxiously, not making a sound, but quickly gesturing for him to come over.
