Chapter 2 - Little Rascal Brother

Soon, the whole Xu Family's household came to the clinic, and it was another chaos.

Looking at the group of people in front of her, Xu Mumu recalled her memories and called them one by one.

"Mumu, why did you fall into the water?" Madam Chen gently stroked Xu Mumu's cheek with her rough hands. Xu Mumu's face was still a bit pale, and Madam Chen felt extremely distressed.

"I slipped." Xu Mumu smiled and didn't say much. She decided to first get a clear picture of the situation to avoid saying something wrong.

After getting some medicine from the clinic, the family took Xu Mumu back home.

"Sis, sis, are you feeling better?" After resting for a night, Xu Mumu cleared her thoughts. Just as she got up, the door was knocked, and the visitor was a boy about ten years old.

"Little brother, why aren't you at school?" Xu Mumu's voice was a bit hoarse. The boy looked rather cute with his chubby face.

The boy quickly poured some water from a nearby warm kettle, putting it into a bowl—a rustic one with a crack on it.

"I took leave," Xu Minglei said with a smile. Staying home to take care of his sick sister was a great reason to take a leave.

Xu Mumu lowered her head, drinking the water the boy brought.

After drinking the water, Xu Mumu felt a bit more comfortable.

Looking at her fair hands, Xu Mumu pursed her lips slightly. She realized she had transmigrated into a book.

But being able to continue living, how wonderful.

After struggling for half a year in the apocalypse, she almost forgot what color the sky was.

"Sis, are you hungry? Grandma warmed an egg for you in the pot. Do you want to eat it?" Xu Minglei looked at his sister with some concern. What's wrong with his sister? Is she still not feeling well?

"Yes, I want to eat." Xu Mumu instinctively licked her lips. Eggs! After the apocalypse, chickens had become ferocious. Trying to catch them or get their eggs can mean being pecked to death.

"Wait a moment, I'll get it for you," Xu Minglei immediately dashed off to get the boiled egg for Xu Mumu.

After Xu Minglei ran out, Xu Mumu had time to focus on her surroundings. This was her room, even older than the countryside home she saw in her past life.

The room wasn't big; the walls were made of mud, covered with newspaper in several spots. Beside the bed was a wooden cabinet with the original owner's clothes inside. Other than the cabinet, there was only a bed and a wicker basket under the bed filled with the original owner's textbooks.

The bedding was quite hard, probably slept on for many years.

"Sis, the egg, hurry and eat it." Xu Minglei ran in with the egg.

Looking at the egg, Xu Mumu felt warmth in her heart. She was very cherished at home because her mother Li Caixia had dreamed of a rosy cloud before she was born and secretly went to the village's old blind man to ask about it.

It was said that the old blind man was skilled, especially in fortune-telling.

The old blind man said it was a daughter, with a good fate, prosperous for the family and husband.

Upon hearing the old blind man say the child in her belly was a girl, Li Caixia nearly hit the old blind man.

However, she took in some of the old blind man's later words and went back to tell Xu Mumu's grandmother about it.

That night, Li Caixia gave birth to a fair-skinned girl, which shocked both mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. Since then, Xu Mumu had been a beloved child.

The Old Xu Family was quite large; Xu Family's elder couple was still around and had four sons and two daughters.

The eldest, Xu Hai, who was Xu Mumu's father, married Li Caixia from the neighboring production brigade, and had two sons and a daughter. The eldest son Xu Minghui, was nineteen this year and was starting to see someone.

The second daughter, Xu Mumu, was sixteen this year, studying in high school in the county. She was currently at home recuperating from illness.

The youngest son, Xu Minglei, was only ten years old, studying at the village elementary school. He disliked schooling and was particularly mischievous.

The second son, Xu Jiang, married Qian Ying, and they had two daughters. The elder daughter, Xu Xue, was fifteen this year, and the younger daughter, Xu Wan, was twelve.

The third son, Xu He, married Lin Juan, and they had a son, Xu Dongbao, who was the same age as Xu Minglei, ten years old, living in the county. Xu He was pretty much a son-in-law to the Lin Family.

The fourth son, Xu Po, married Sun Huiping, and they had a pair of twins, Xu Tao and Xu Jiaojiao, who were eight years old.

The elder sister Xu Chunmei married into a distant village, while the younger sister Xu Qingxing married in the county, living a comfortable life since her husband was on a salary.

There were really many people in this family, and the family struggled to have enough food; life was difficult.

"Let's split it in half," Xu Mumu divided the egg into two halves and gave one half to Xu Minglei.

In her memories, Xu Mumu often shared her food with Xu Minglei, hence their good sibling relationship.

"Sis, you eat, you're sick," Xu Minglei swallowed hard and moved his gaze from the egg with difficulty; he feared looking at it too long would tempt him to snatch it and eat it directly.

The eldest sister was still sick; it was all Xu Xue's fault. That dead girl pushed the eldest sister into the river. But fortunately, he taught Xu Xue a lesson, hmph.

Indeed, even though Xu Mumu hadn't said anything, Madam Chen questioned Xu Xue and her sister and found out the truth from them.

After knowing the truth, the sisters naturally couldn't avoid a beating.

"I can't finish it; you have to eat it, or I won't eat it either," Xu Mumu said with a smile. Her younger brother was quite cute.

Xu Minglei was conflicted, knowing the egg was delicious. Looking at the divided egg, emitting an enticing aroma, he swallowed again, wanting to eat.

"Then I'll eat a little bit; you should eat more since you're not well," Xu Minglei divided the egg half Xu Mumu gave him further and ate the bottom half, giving the rest to Xu Mumu.

"Okay." Xu Mumu smiled faintly; her little brother was well-behaved, making her kind of fond of him.

Xu Mumu ate up the remaining egg; she had nearly forgotten the taste of a boiled egg. She quickly finished the majority of it.

"Sis, don't worry, I've already avenged you." Xu Minglei said with a mischievous smile, seeing Xu Mumu finish the egg and not worried about the egg anymore.

Seeing her little brother's look, Xu Mumu's eyebrow twitched, then asked nonchalantly, "What did you do?"

"I threw a rock at Xu Xue when she wasn't looking; her forehead was bleeding," Xu Minglei said excitedly.

"When did you hit her?" Xu Mumu had a bad feeling; her little brother was too fierce, no wonder he would become a little thug.

"Just earlier, I saw her lying outside. That dead girl always pretends to be sick. This time, she's probably pretending again, trying to blackmail us. Luckily she didn't see me," Xu Minglei said proudly.
