Chapter 15 - Observations

The classroom buzzed with morning energy as Mara, Gael, and the rest of the group — Vivienne, Iris, Selene, Naomi, and Calla — shuffled toward their usual seats. Gael moved with the same calm, measured steps, Mara's arm brushing his as they walked, light but deliberate. "Do you think he even remembers anything from last night?" Calla whispered to Selene, barely keeping her voice under control. Selene smirked. "Oh, he remembers. But he doesn't feel it the way Mara does. That's the scary part." Vivienne leaned closer to Mara. "Seriously, Mara, spill! Did he act differently this morning?" Mara shrugged casually, hiding a small smile. "Nothing dramatic. He's… Gael. Calm, focused. Observant. And still insanely frustrating." Naomi nudged her. "Frustrating how?" Mara leaned in conspiratorially. "Let's just say he's been testing me… and I'm testing him back. You'll see."

Gael slid into his chair next to Mara, stacking his notebook neatly, adjusting his pen. His movements were precise, controlled, and yet Mara could feel the quiet heat of presence. The other girls' eyes flicked to him instinctively. He was beautiful in an effortless way — tall, smooth features, ocean-blue eyes that seemed to analyze rather than engage — but something about the closeness with Mara made their attention sharper. Calla whispered to Iris, "She's totally got him wrapped around her finger." Iris snorted. "If she even tries. He's like a statue. You can prod him all you want and get nothing back… until you don't." Mara caught Gael glancing at her, calm and steady. Her heartbeat quickened despite herself. She nudged him lightly under the table. "Remember the project?" she murmured, a teasing smirk tugging at her lips. Gael tilted his head. "Yes." His voice was even, casual, detached. But his eyes lingered on her, curious, measuring. Vivienne, watching the interaction, elbowed Selene. "Do you think he notices how Mara flirts with him?"

Selene rolled her eyes. "He notices. He just doesn't react. That's why it's so maddening." The teacher stepped in to begin the lesson, but the group's subtle attention remained split between notes and observing the tension at Mara's side. Mara reached over, brushing her hand lightly against Gael's, playful yet deliberate, and whispered, "Pay attention, or you'll fail the project." Gael's lips curved into the faintest, almost imperceptible smile. "Noted." The other girls exchanged knowing glances, stifling giggles, their curiosity and amusement evident. For Mara, it was a thrill — testing his boundaries subtly in front of everyone, seeing him calm but aware, and realizing how much power his stillness gave her in the moment. By the time the bell rang for the next class, the tension between Mara and Gael had left a faint trail in the air, teasing the group and cementing his status as the mysterious, captivating center of their collective fascination. Walking together to the next class, Mara brushed her hand against his arm again, soft and daring, while Gael simply noted the sensation, filing it silently as yet another new experience. The five girls trailed just behind, whispering, laughing quietly, and plotting how they'd navigate the curiosity, admiration, and subtle jealousy Gael inspired — all while Mara's boldness kept him close, a quiet challenge he didn't yet understand.

As they settled into their next classroom, the five girls huddled together just behind Mara and Gael, their whispers urgent and conspiratorial. "I can't believe she's actually walking with him like that," Vivienne murmured, her eyes wide. "Does she even realize how bold that is?" Calla snorted. "Bold? She's practically dangling him in front of us!" Mara shot a glance over her shoulder, smirking, enjoying the tiny chaos she'd stirred. "You guys are ridiculous," she whispered, leaning just enough for Gael to catch the motion. "He's calm, remember? Nothing fazes him." Iris elbowed Selene, whispering conspiratorially, "Okay, but come on… Mara clearly did something last night. Right? Tell us! We need to know." Mara groaned, rolling her eyes dramatically. "You guys are relentless. Fine. But don't freak out. And no, I'm not giving you a full play-by-play. Some things are private."

Naomi giggled. "Private? Please. You're totally blushing. That counts." Mara's cheeks warmed slightly, and she swatted Naomi's arm with mock annoyance. "I'm not blushing! And yes, it happened… but he's Gael. He doesn't… feel emotions like we do. So don't get your hopes up thinking I've gone full crazy here." Selene leaned forward, her grin mischievous. "Wait, wait. I have one question. Is he… you know? Big?" The group erupted into laughter, and even Mara couldn't help a small chuckle. "You are all disgusting," she hissed, covering her mouth. "That is not the first thing you ask about someone! But yes… he's… normal. Let's leave it at that." Calla's eyes twinkled. "Normal? You can't just say 'normal'! Give us something." Mara rolled her eyes, shaking her head. "Nope. You'll just have to imagine. Honestly, the whole thing is… intense, but he's calm, controlled, and completely unreadable. That's what makes him… frustrating. And addictive." Vivienne groaned dramatically. "Frustrating and addictive? Mara, you're terrifying. I can't even—"

Iris elbowed her, whispering urgently, "Shhh! Don't let him hear!" Gael, sitting two seats ahead, adjusted his notebook and glanced up briefly, eyes catching Mara's in a quiet, steady measure. He didn't smile, didn't react, but the smallest tilt of his head made Mara's stomach flutter. She reached over, letting her hand brush briefly against his, a subtle touch that the girls all noticed. Selene leaned closer to Calla and whispered with a grin, "See that? She's testing him again. And he's… nothing. Just stone." Mara smirked faintly at the observation, whispering, "Exactly. Stone. But I get to explore… little by little."

Naomi leaned back, feigning innocence. "You're a monster." "I know," Mara whispered back with a grin, glancing at Gael. "And he… doesn't care." The bell rang, signaling the next lesson, but the chatter among the five girls didn't fade. They whispered, nudged, and giggled, still plotting how to navigate the enigma that was Gael — the boy who could excite curiosity and jealousy without feeling anything himself — all while Mara walked beside him, bold, confident, and fully aware of the effect she had. As the group moved into the next classroom, Mara brushed her hand against Gael's arm once more, soft, daring, playful. He simply noted the sensation, cataloging the warmth and pressure without naming it, while the girls whispered behind them, their curiosity and excitement leaving a trail of energy in their wake. It was clear to everyone watching: Mara had him close, Gael remained calm and unknowable, and the dynamic between them — teasing, frustrating, thrilling — was only beginning.

The lunch bell rang, echoing through the hallways, and Mara, Vivienne, Iris, Selene, Naomi, and Calla made their way to the cafeteria. Gael, as usual, moved with calm precision beside her for a moment, but then veered off toward the library, his backpack slung neatly over one shoulder. "He's going to the library?" Naomi whispered, eyebrows raised. "At lunch? Who does that?" Calla snorted. "Gael does. Because he's Gael. And because he's… impossible." Vivienne leaned closer to Mara, elbowing her playfully. "Okay, now tell us everything. You walked in with him, your arm brushed his, he didn't even flinch… did you do more this morning?" Mara groaned dramatically, shaking her head. "You are all insane. Nothing happened this morning. But yes… last night? That was… something else. I don't even know where to start."

Selene grinned. "Start from the top, Mara. We need the details. Don't hold back." Mara leaned back, folding her arms, and glanced around to make sure no one else could hear. "Fine. But just a little. Gael… he's different from anyone I've ever met. Calm, steady, completely unreadable. And last night? He… experienced something new. Something he's never felt before. And I got to… help him discover it." Vivienne's eyes widened. "Help him discover… you mean like… sex?" Mara groaned, covering her face with her hands. "Yes! But not the way you think! He doesn't… feel it like normal people. He likes the sensations, the closeness, but emotions? Forget it. None of that. He's… calm. Like a statue, but terrifyingly intense at the same time." Calla burst out laughing. "Intense but calm. Got it. Mara, you're evil."

Naomi leaned forward, smirking. "And the important question… is he big?" The group erupted into laughter, their heads bobbing with amusement. Mara groaned audibly, swatting Naomi's arm. "You're all disgusting! That's not even the first question you should ask about someone!" Iris laughed so hard she had to wipe tears from her eyes. "Come on, Mara! You have to give us at least a hint. We need mental images!" Mara shook her head, laughing despite herself. "Nope. You'll just have to imagine. Honestly… the whole experience was… strange. Exciting. Frustrating. Pleasurable… and yet he didn't flinch once. Not at all." Vivienne sighed dramatically. "So he's untouchable, but you managed to… not fail?"

"Exactly," Mara said with a small, mischievous smile. "I got to explore, test boundaries, see how far I could go. And he… stayed calm the whole time. It's maddening and thrilling all at once." Calla leaned back in her chair, shaking her head. "You're brave. Or insane. Maybe both." Mara laughed softly, shaking her head. "Maybe both. But honestly… you have no idea how strange it is to see someone feel pleasure without the chaos of emotions. It's like… he experiences everything in slow motion. And you can watch it happen. It's… addictive." The group fell silent for a moment, absorbing the story, then bursts of giggles and whispered comments returned. They spent the rest of lunch dissecting, teasing, and joking about Mara and Gael, imagining scenarios, questioning every detail, and marveling at the calm, handsome boy who had completely captivated their friend — and, by extension, them.

Meanwhile, Gael sat alone in the library, flipping pages and observing the world quietly from afar, unaware of the commotion he had sparked, cataloging each sensation of the library — the soft rustle of paper, the faint smell of books, the warmth of the sunlight through the windows — while the girls whispered, plotted, and laughed about him for the entire lunch period. By the time the bell rang for the next class, Mara and the girls had spent the full lunch hour wrapped in their curiosity and amusement, the tension of Gael's stillness lingering over them like a puzzle none of them could fully solve.
