The land of Israel lay restless. For centuries, the people had lived under foreign rulers — Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, and now the mighty Roman Empire. Though they worked, prayed, and built their lives, a quiet ache lingered in their hearts: the promise of a Messiah, a savior foretold by prophets of old.
The scriptures told of one who would come from the line of King David, one who would bring peace and restore God's people. The prophet Isaiah had once written:
> "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given.
And the government will be upon his shoulders.
He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Prince of Peace."
Generations repeated these words, fathers telling sons, mothers whispering to daughters. Children fell asleep at night imagining a king riding in with power, while elders longed for freedom from oppression.
