Chapter 18 – Shadows in the Court
The night after the council's division, the royal halls of Valebridge no longer felt safe. Whispers slithered through the stone corridors like snakes in tall grass. Servants spoke in hushed voices, and guards exchanged uneasy glances. Everywhere Nyra walked, she felt their stares — fear and awe tangled together like vines.
But in the chambers beneath the castle, a different gathering took place.
Prince Corvin Ash of the Black Dominion leaned against the edge of a long oak table, his black-gloved fingers tracing lazy patterns over a map of the realm. Across from him stood Duke Tavian Grell, his jaw clenched, eyes sharp with suspicion. Around them, a handful of lesser lords and shadowy figures waited, their faces half-hidden by hooded cloaks.
Corvin broke the silence with a smile as cold as steel.
"You saw it yourselves. That girl is no savior. She is a storm waiting to consume us all. And yet…" he chuckled softly, "…these fools hail her as chosen."
Tavian grunted. "King Aldric won't abandon her. Not yet. She won his war."
"True," Corvin admitted, pacing slowly. "But men like Aldric are bound by honor. That is his weakness. My… talents lie elsewhere."
He leaned in, voice lowering to a venomous whisper.
"The people already whisper of prophecy — a girl of fire who will save the realm or destroy it. All we must do is guide the fear. Fan the flames. When her allies look at her, they will see not hope… but ruin."
A cloaked woman stepped forward — Veyna Drift, spymaster of the Dominion, her amber eyes glittering in the candlelight. "Rumors spread faster than blades, my prince. I will see to it that every tavern sings of her fire scorching children in their beds, of villages burning in her wake."
Corvin's lips curved into a predator's smile.
"Excellent. By the time I am done, they will beg me to be rid of her."

Meanwhile, above the shadowed court, Nyra stood on the castle balcony, staring out at the city. Lanterns glimmered like stars below, and yet she felt no peace.
Kaelith stepped up beside her, silent for a moment before speaking.
"They fear you," he said quietly.
Nyra's jaw tightened. "They should."
Kaelith turned, surprised. Her eyes glowed faintly in the dark, fire flickering beneath her skin.
"I've tried," she whispered, voice cracking. "I've tried to be what they want. But every time I call the flames, I hear it — the hunger. What if Corvin is right? What if I am no different from Malakar?"
Kaelith placed a steady hand on her shoulder. "Malakar destroys for power. You fight for life. That is the difference."
She looked at him, searching his face for truth, but found only silence in his storm-gray eyes.
From the shadows near the balcony, Darius leaned against the railing, smirking.
"Careful, little flame," he drawled. "Fear is a poison. Drink too much of it, and you'll burn yourself long before anyone else has the chance."
Nyra gave him a sharp look, but his words lingered.
Below, in the streets of Valebridge, the first whispers began to spread — tales of a fiery witch whose magic would soon consume them all.
And in the darkness, Corvin Ash's web tightened.
