Chapter 23 - The Silent King

Ajay was exhausted, every step dragging him deeper into the edge of collapse. His body was shredded from the last fight, but his mind refused surrender. He was too close. One more level—just one—and the system promised him evolution, a class, new skills. A path forward.

But he couldn't wander too far from the palace. The Rad Fang gang hunted him like rabid dogs, their rage unending. He had revenge to claim. He had Gyur to avenge.

He reached the marketplace, its open expanse usually buzzing with chaos. Today—silence. The air itself seemed cut away, like someone had muted the world. Ajay froze. He recognized the sensation instantly.

He had stepped into a hunting field.

His armor—nothing more than tattered scraps—clung to him in bloody strips. His dagger, once weightless, now dragged like iron in his grip. Every movement screamed fatigue. But his will burned.

This was no aimless pack of ghouls, no half-born mutants. What he faced now was something far worse. Not instinct, not chaos—strategy. An army.

Ajay melted into shadow, slipping through the twisting alleys of the market's ruined skeleton. He stalked like a phantom, blade whispering through one zombie throat after another. Quick, clean kills. The horde thinned, their numbers bleeding away.

But in the silence, he felt it. Eyes on him. Cold, calculating. And then he saw it.

The lord of the horde.

Not a beast. Not even a grotesque mutant. But a man-shaped thing in polished black boots, a pressed white shirt, and calm, human features. Only the faint red glow in his eyes betrayed what he truly was.

And when its mouth moved, Ajay's blood ran cold.

"Greetings, human," the thing said smoothly. "You've been killing my soldiers. How do you intend to explain that?"

Ajay's breath stalled. A speaking zombie. Worse—a thinking one.

The being smiled faintly. "You are skilled. Too skilled for a stray. Join me. Become my commander. Serve me, and I will give you power beyond gangs, beast cores, or even your pitiful system."

Behind him, two figures flanked the lord. Commanders. One a shadow-thin creature with claws like razors, her body twitching with unnatural speed. The other a brute, massive and scarred, gripping a stone hammer in both hands—an abomination of undead wielding a weapon like a trained soldier.

The sight chilled Ajay deeper than the lord's words. If these creatures multiplied, humanity's survival was doomed.

His mind whispered a single answer: This one must die.

Ajay's grip tightened on his dagger. "So, you can speak. And you want me to join your army of corpses?"

The lord tilted his head. "Correct. Serve me, and you can have everything."

Ajay's mana stirred, gathering for a strike. His body tensed like a bowstring. "But why me? There are plenty of stronger humans out there. Why choose me?"

The lord's eyes flicked toward his brute commander. That tiny distraction was all Ajay needed.

Shadow-step.

He vanished, reappearing in a blur of darkness. His dagger slashed for the lord's throat. But a hand of iron seized his wrist mid-swing.

The lord's smile widened. "Fast. But predictable."

Ajay's veins pulsed red as his blood affinity surged, strength doubling for a heartbeat. His dagger tore free, scoring a shallow line across the lord's neck. Black ichor dripped.

The brute roared, hammer swinging. Ajay rolled aside—stone shattered where he'd stood. The shadow-creature lunged, claws raking his shoulder. Fire lanced through him.

Ajay hissed. He was burning through mana too fast. His only chance: kill the king. Cut the head, and the body would fall.

He vanished again, dagger raised in Silent Reap. But the lord twisted, body bending backward in a grotesque inhuman arc. His hand lashed out, gripping Ajay's throat.

"Why resist?" the lord murmured, eyes glowing. "We could build a new world together."

Ajay shadow-stepped away, chest heaving. His momentum was gone. And the army surged forward at their master's command.

The alley became a storm of bodies. Ajay darted between them, shadows wrapping him, calculations racing in his head. He needed to break the commanders first.

He baited the shadow-creature into a narrow alley. Her speed faltered in the confined space. Ajay mirrored her, agility maxed, shadow-step weaving him through her claws. She snarled, slamming into rubble, and Ajay struck—blade flashing across her throat.

A hiss. A gurgle. Her body collapsed, ichor pooling. One commander down.

The brute's roar shook the walls. His hammer swung like a falling star, smashing stone to dust. Ajay's dagger nicked his thigh, but the hide was too thick—unyielding as rhino armor.

The next swing caught Ajay mid-roll, smashing him against a wall. Ribs cracked. Blood sprayed his lips. His interface blinked:

[HP: 22%]

The brute charged. Ajay waited.

The hammer descended. At the last instant, Ajay shadow-stepped forward, into the swing, his dagger plunging upward. Steel bit spine. The brute convulsed, hammer crashing into the wall behind him, before collapsing into ruin.

The alley shook with the fall.

Ajay rose, chest burning, just as the lesser zombies lunged. He cut them down with precision—high stats overwhelming their lesser strength. And then the square fell silent again.

Only the lord remained.

He stepped forward slowly, clapping once. His eyes glowed brighter. "Impressive. You killed my commanders. But now… you face me."

Ajay's dagger trembled in his hand. His system screamed warnings:

[HP: 18%][Mana: 9%]

One clash, maybe two. That was all he had left.

The lord spread his arms, voice rich and cold. "Join me. Command my legions. Immortality can be yours."

Ajay smiled through blood. "Immortality? All I see is a corpse in nice shoes."

The smile vanished from the lord's face. "Then die."

He blurred forward, speed eclipsing his commanders. Ajay barely shadow-stepped aside. He retaliated with a slash, but the lord's body bent impossibly, elbow snapping backward into Ajay's chest. Bones cracked. Blood sprayed.

Ajay staggered, but his blood affinity kept him moving. Strength burned through him like fire. He feinted left, shadow-stepped right, and slashed upward.

The lord caught the blade between two fingers, ichor seeping, but held firm. His other hand darted for Ajay's heart.

Ajay released the dagger, palms glowing red with blood affinity, and smashed it into the lord's jaw. Bone cracked. The king staggered. Ajay snatched his blade back.

The lord laughed, black ichor dripping from his lips. "Good. It has been centuries since anyone hurt me. You'll make a fine corpse."

As they circled, his voice slithered like poison. "Why fight? Humans hunt you. Your gangs. Your friends. Even Gyur."

Ajay froze. "How do you know his name?"

The king's smile widened. "You insult me. Of course I know of the Rad Fang, of you. They whisper you side with us. How amusing. And Gyur… yes. The fool who sacrificed himself for you. Noble. Wasted. But I could give his memory purpose. Imagine, Ajay—Gyur fighting at your side again. Forever loyal."

Rage snapped Ajay's restraint. "You don't get to speak his name."

He lunged. His dagger scored a line across the king's chest, ichor hissing on the ground. Claws speared toward his eyes—he ducked, slashing again.

The battle blurred into a storm. Ajay's body bled, broke, but his mind calculated. He learned the rhythm—the half-second pause, the subtle twitch before a strike.

He waited.

The lord lunged, claws for his throat.

Ajay stepped into it. The claws pierced his shoulder, pain exploding, but he forced himself forward. His dagger thrust upward, straight into the lord's mouth.

Steel punched through palate, into skull.

The king's eyes widened. Shock.

Ajay snarled, teeth gritted. "That's for Gyur."

He ripped the blade free, ichor spraying.

The king staggered, laughter bubbling wetly from his broken mouth. "Impressive… but you… cannot stop… what is coming."

Ajay's dagger slashed one last time, splitting his throat. The red glow dimmed. The king of the horde fell.

Ajay collapsed to his knees, chest heaving, body shaking. The system lit up.

[Level Up!][Milestone Reached: First Evolution Path Unlocked][Class Selection Available]

Light surged through him, mana flooding back, wounds glowing shut.

Ajay laughed, broken but triumphant. "I did it."

Then the world went black.

The marketplace lay silent once more—not by the king's will, but by his death. The army dissolved into chaos, fleeing. And in the ruined square, Ajay lay unconscious, blood-soaked but alive.

He had slain a king. He had crossed his milestone.

But the king's final words echoed in his dreams.

You cannot stop what is coming.
