Chapter 139 - The Price of Rejecting the Sacred

In the following days, Dominic became a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, although this new member always brought some baffling trouble to everyone. Whenever Quill tried to show off his leadership skills, Dominic could always make him embarrassed on the spot with one sentence; whenever Rocket complained about uneven work distribution, Dominic would point out his greed sharply; even Gamora sometimes had to admit that Dominic's observational skills and powerful combat ability indeed added a lot to the team.

However, precisely because of his indifferent attitude towards danger, the Guardians' missions were completed much more smoothly than before. From saving a Planet on the verge of destruction to stealing a certain galactic lord's treasure map, each mission concluded with Dominic's strong assistance. Despite this, the team members still had quite a few complaints about his "detached" style – he always stood aside, seemingly never truly integrating.

One day, the Guardians received a commission from the Sovereign – to kill an interstellar monster entrenched in an energy mine. It was said that the monster was not only impervious to weapons but could also absorb energy attacks, already causing heavy casualties to the Sovereign's elite guard.

As the mission began, everyone engaged in a fierce battle. The giant interstellar monster was shaped like an octopus, its eight tentacles whipping up an energy storm as they swung. Quill flew in mid-air, his jet boots spitting fire, shouting as he fired: "Listen to my command! Gamora, cover the left flank; Rocket, go interfere with its vision! Drax – Drax, what are you doing?!"

Drax had already charged straight towards the monster, wielding his twin knives and trying to climb onto its back. His face was full of excitement, shouting, "Head-on confrontation is the real way to fight! Everything else is a coward's trick!"

"Coward's trick?" Rocket's hand trembled with anger, his laser gun nearly going astray. "Fine! Then you'll see how powerful a coward's trick can be!" With that, a series of precise laser shots directly hit the monster's eyes.

"I am Groot," Groot said softly, wrapping one of the monster's tentacles with branches, trying to slow down its attack frequency.

The battle was raging, the scene a complete mess, only Dominic was leaning against a rock, leisurely munching on an apple in his hand. As he chewed, he commented, "Quill, your marksmanship is really terrible. You can miss a target this big three times. No wonder Gamora isn't interested in you."

Quill nearly fell from the air upon hearing this. "Shut up! Who says Gamora isn't interested in me?"

"I am Groot," Groot's voice interjected into the battle's clamor, and Rocket immediately translated, "Groot says he can tell that Gamora's eyes look like she's watching a three-year-old child."

"All of you, shut up!" Gamora sliced off one of the monster's tentacles with a swing of her blade, her face livid. "Can you please focus?!"

Dominic shrugged innocently. "I am very focused, focused on watching how you turn this battle into a circus performance."

"Circus performance?" Rocket was so angry his tail bristled. "Why don't you go in there? Don't just stand there acting like a critic watching a show!"

Dominic took a bite of his apple and pointed at the monster. "You guys keep playing, I'm not in a hurry to step in. If you really can't handle it, I'll consider helping."

Quill flew over Dominic's head, shouting, "You're not in a hurry to step in, but we are! Don't forget this is a Guardians' mission, not your vacation!"

Drax had by now climbed onto the monster's back and plunged his twin knives down fiercely, but the monster just shook slightly and threw him off. He fell to the ground with a roar, struggling to get up, his face full of excitement. "Awesome! It's strong! This is the enemy I wanted!"

Dominic watched all this and shook his head. "This Drax, does he really have rocks in his head?"

"I am Groot," Groot said, waving his branches, trying to stop the monster from swinging another tentacle.

Rocket panted and cursed, "Groot says stop talking nonsense and do more work!"

Only then did Dominic slowly stand up and casually toss the half-eaten apple into the air. The apple arced through the air and accurately hit one of the monster's eyes. The monster immediately let out an angry roar, its tentacles flailing wildly, making the whole scene even more chaotic.

"What are you doing?" Quill demanded loudly.

Dominic smiled faintly. "Provoking it. How about it? My effect is pretty good, right?"

Gamora was completely speechless, wiping the sweat from her face with the back of her hand. "Can you stop making things worse?"

Dominic's smile deepened, a sharp light flashing in his eyes. "Alright, then let me end all this." He raised his hand, his eyes glowing slightly, and a scorching red beam of light shot out from his eyes, instantly piercing through the monster's body.

The monster let out a scream, its body twitched a few times, and finally crashed to the ground, kicking up a huge cloud of dust.

The scene was silent. All the Guardians stood there dumbfounded, watching Dominic slowly retract his gaze. He clapped his hands, his tone relaxed. "You guys really opened my eyes. This mission was completed wonderfully."

The Sovereign High Priestess Ayesha sat regally on her golden throne.

Her lofty posture made one feel involuntarily oppressed. The Guardians were brought before her. Rocket still wore his nonchalant expression, while Quill attempted to ease the tension with a not-so-successful smile.

"You dare to touch the Sovereign's sacred energy!" Ayesha slowly stood up, her voice carrying an undeniable majesty. "This is not only an insult to the Sovereign but also a personal provocation to me."

Rocket folded his arms and tilted his head. "Oh, please, we just 'borrowed' a little bit of energy. Besides, none of you put up a sign saying 'Private Property, Do Not Touch', did you?"

Quill suddenly turned his head and glared fiercely at Rocket. "Can you stop getting us into trouble?"

Ayesha's gaze swept over them, finally stopping on Dominic. Her golden eyes flickered, and a strange smile played on her lips. "Dominic... you are the only noteworthy presence among them. Your body emanates an extraordinary power." She slowly approached, her voice low and meaningful. "If you are willing, we can create the most perfect offspring. This will be an unprecedented glory for the Sovereign."

The rest of the Guardians instantly fell into awkward silence. Rocket scoffed and muttered under his breath, "Wow, this scene is more eye-watering than Quill's dating history."

Quill retorted in a low voice, "At least I don't talk about genetics when I'm trying to pick up girls!"

There wasn't a ripple on Dominic's face. He looked at Ayesha with a half-smile. "Mating? Are you sure you can handle it?"

Ayesha was visibly taken aback for a moment, but then she resumed her usual arrogance. "My lineage is unparalleled. My endurance... is beyond your imagination."

Dominic shook his head gently, his tone laced with sarcasm. "Sorry, I'm not interested in shiny golden dolls." After saying that, he turned around, not even bothering to look at her again.

Ayesha's expression instantly turned grim. She watched Dominic's back coldly, raised her hand, and commanded, "Kill them."

The Sovereign soldiers instantly surged forward, their golden armor reflecting dazzling light under the illumination, and the scene immediately became tense.

"Alright, now we're really in trouble." Quill sighed and quickly drew his twin guns. "Rocket, just so you know, no more causing trouble this time!"

Rocket jumped onto a rock, his modified laser gun already firing wildly. "Hey, this isn't my fault! It's your 'charming man' who got us involved with this crazy woman!"

The battle was about to erupt. Gamora's twin blades flashed with cold light, weaving through the soldiers, each move deadly. Groot's branches whipped like a whip, directly sending several soldiers flying. Drax roared and charged into the crowd, slicing through enemies one after another with his knives, while Rocket fired and shouted at Dominic, "Why don't you use a big move and just clear out all these shiny guys?"

Dominic stood still, his gaze sweeping over the melee.

His eyes glowed slightly, and a scorching red light instantly swept across the battlefield. The golden-armored soldiers turned to ash in the beam, screams mixed with explosions echoing in the hall.

Quill covered his face and shouted through gritted teeth at Rocket, "Can't you be a little more low-key?! Now we've really become intergalactic fugitives!"

Rocket shrugged, completely unconcerned. "You haven't been a moral role model for a long time, Quill, stop pretending!"

Witnessing the soldiers' carnage, Ayesha's face had completely lost its calm. Her voice trembled with rage. "Everyone, kill them! Kill Dominic!"

More soldiers surged from all directions. The light from laser cannons and energy weapons lit up the entire hall. Dominic sneered, stepping forward calmly. "Want to kill me? You're not qualified."
