Chapter 127 - Monsters and Heroes

Dominic walked to the center of the room, his steps light and steady, as if taking a stroll. His cold gaze swept over each Hydra soldier who attempted to retaliate. He raised a finger and flicked it lightly, releasing an invisible force that hurled a group of soldiers against the wall, splattering blood everywhere. Screams and the clanging of metal mingled together, like an absurd symphony.

"Hiding won't help," Dominic said in a low voice, his tone flippant as if he were humming a nursery rhyme. His gaze locked onto a soldier trying to crawl towards cover, and with a light step, the man's chest caved in, emitting a dying whimper.

Hermann Strauss stood on the high platform, his cold smile gradually freezing. His hands gripped the handrails tightly, trying to maintain his composure, but his slightly trembling shoulders betrayed his inner turmoil. He watched Dominic reap the lives of soldiers like the Grim Reaper, each movement cold and precise.

"Your pieces are really not durable." Dominic looked up at Strauss with a mocking smile. "Don't you understand that the stupidest thing in the world is to use numbers to fight against strength?"

Strauss forced himself to calm down and gritted his teeth, saying, "You killed them, but you can't change anything! Project Insight has been launched, and the course of history is now in our hands!"

Dominic laughed upon hearing this, a low, maniacal laugh that echoed throughout the room. He slowly raised his hand, igniting an energy beam in his palm. A crimson light instantly pierced the room, destroying an automated turret. The firelight illuminated his face, making his smile appear even more sinister.

"Control? What do you think you're controlling?" Dominic's tone was full of mockery and sarcasm. "Every morning when I wake up, I can feel my power growing, like an endless evolution. Every punch, every strike, is enough to destroy an organization like yours. And what about you? You can only hide in the shadows of technology like rats, trying to prove your worth with a bunch of cold machines."

He approached the platform step by step, the light in his hand flickering. His voice gradually deepened, yet became even more intimidating: "You people are truly pathetic, always trying to shape your so-called future with conspiracies and power, yet never daring to confront a true strongman. Every day I ponder one thing—is humanity truly worth saving? Scum like you, with your greed and fear, are dragging the entire world into the abyss. What right do you have to talk about control?"

Strauss gritted his teeth, trying to make his voice sound firm: "You're just a monster! You're no different from us, even worse. Power has blinded you, and you'll eventually be consumed by your own arrogance, just like us!"

Dominic's smile faded, his eyes turning cold and sharp. He said in a low voice, "Blind? Perhaps. But at least, I won't let a pest like you continue to live."

After saying this, he suddenly raised his hand, and a beam of energy pierced through the protective barrier of the platform. Strauss's body was thrown backward by the shockwave, crashing heavily to the ground. He struggled to get up, but found that he could no longer stand.

"Every day when I wake up, I ask myself the same question." Dominic slowly walked towards Strauss, who was lying on the ground, his voice low and suppressed, "Am I a god, or a man?"

He crouched down, his gaze icy as he looked at Strauss. The surrounding air seemed to vanish, leaving only his voice echoing: "You call me a monster, but the ridiculous thing is, you scum pray to a monster every day to save you. You think your technology and plans can create order? No, you're just using chaos to cover up your incompetence."

A twist of fear crossed Strauss's face, but he still managed to say, "You...you won't win forever. Someone will always stop you."

Dominic chuckled softly, then stood up, his tone tinged with a hint of sarcasm: "Perhaps. But that day is still far off. And you, unfortunately, won't live to see it."

He raised his hand, and a dazzling burst of energy condensed at his fingertips. Strauss wanted to say something, but he didn't even have time to utter his last words before he was engulfed by the light and turned to ashes.

Dominic turned to look at Steve, Natasha, and Sam, who were busy on the other side. Steve was quickly organizing a pile of documents, Natasha was hacking into the terminal's system, and Sam was using his wingsuit to search for hidden devices in the room.

"Have you got it sorted out?" Dominic's tone remained indifferent, as if what had just happened was meaningless.

Natasha didn't look up, her fingers flying across the keyboard: "A few more minutes. The terminal encryption is tricky, but I'm almost done."

Steve glanced back at Dominic, his eyes filled with complex emotions. He said in a deep voice, "Didn't you... go a bit too far just now?"

Dominic shrugged and replied casually, "Too much? Maybe. But you know, that's how pathetic bad guys are, nobody cares when they die."

Sam stood to the side, the overwhelming power Dominic displayed before him reminding him of a Superman comic book he'd read as a child. Batman, standing in the rain, coldly told the near-invincible Superman, "Power is not to be trusted, especially unchecked power." Those words echoed in his mind, and coupled with Dominic's cold and nonchalant killing, a strange unease welled up inside Sam.

Steve was flipping through the last document when he looked up at Sam: "Sam, stop spacing out. We have to get out of here as soon as possible; we can't hold out much longer."

Just then, Tony's voice came through the communicator, clearly indicating that he had completely taken control of the external system: "Hey guys, don't thank me yet. I just slightly modified Hydra's logic loops. Their firewalls are practically made of paper."

"What did you find?" Steve gripped the communicator, his voice tinged with urgency.

"Where you are now is just the tip of the iceberg of the entire 'Operation Insight'," Tony said with his usual sarcasm. "The real mastermind behind it all is Alexander Pierce, a senior commander at Hydra. They not only want to eliminate all potential threats, but also want to transform the Helicarrier into a 'judge' of global threats. In other words, they intend to use their cannons to target anyone they don't like, based on satellite surveillance."

Steve's expression grew even more serious: "Then how much time do we have?"

Tony paused for a moment, then said, "Unfortunately, I have just discovered that the core system of the space carrier has initiated its self-destruct program. It seems that those Hydra people do not intend to let you leave alive."

Natasha typed rapidly on the keyboard and calmly asked, "Can we crack this program?"

"You can try, but I can't guarantee the outcome," Tony replied, a hint of regret in his voice. "The self-destruct program locks all external commands, and even I need time. You obviously don't have that much time."

Sam gritted his teeth, unfurled the folding arm of the flight wing device, and looked at Steve: "Captain, we have to go. The self-destruction of the Helicarrier will turn the entire area into ruins."

Steve hesitated for a moment, his gaze sweeping over the still unfinished files in the room. Finally, he took a deep breath and nodded: "Okay, take everything you can."

"I can give you a ride." Sam patted his flight wing device, trying to make his tone sound more relaxed. "But you'd better hurry, I'm not a taxi driver."

Dominic watched from the side, a cold smile playing on his lips: "You guys are quite cautious. Don't worry, with me here, no one will fall."

Natasha stood up, stuffed an encrypted hard drive into her pocket, and walked toward Dominic: "Looks like I'll have to go with you again. Hopefully, your landing will be smoother this time."

Dominic glanced down at her, a slight smile playing on his lips. "Don't worry, I won't let you fall. After all, rescuing a damsel in distress is my specialty."

Natasha couldn't help but chuckle softly, gently wrapping her arms around his shoulders: "Then I'll have to hold on tight, hero."

Steve and Sam were ready to leave. Sam patted Steve on the shoulder: "Are you ready, Captain?"

Steve nodded and slung his shield over his shoulder. "Let's go, we don't have time to waste."

Sam activated the flight wing device, lifting Steve into the air. Their silhouettes traced an elegant arc in the sky as they headed straight for the emergency exit.

Dominic gently put his arm around Natasha's waist, pushed off with his feet, and his body transformed into a black shadow, quickly soaring into the sky. He glanced down at Natasha, a playful smile on his lips: "Hold on tight, or you'll faint."

Natasha looked up at him, a hint of mockery in her eyes: "You really enjoy being called a hero?"

Dominic's smile deepened: "No, I'm just used to the view from up here."
