Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: Return to the Light

The stone corridor stretched endlessly, the air still heavy with the echoes of their victory. Every step the group took carried the weight of exhaustion, yet also the quiet triumph of surviving what countless others had failed.

Reinhardt's boots scuffed against the cracked floor, his breathing steady though his body screamed for rest. Beside him, Elira walked in silence, her spear slung across her back, her gaze flickering toward him every so often as if searching for unspoken reassurance.

Callen was the first to break the silence, his usual grin dimmed but not gone.

"Still alive, all of us. That's worth a feast, don't you think?"

Alden let out a low chuckle, the kind that rumbled deep in his chest. "I'd settle for a bed first. A feast later."

Despite the banter, there was something sacred about the quiet that followed. They had faced death. Together. The dungeon walls, once oppressive, now felt almost forgiving, as if allowing them safe passage after recognizing their strength.

At last, a faint shimmer appeared ahead—the glowing crest of the academy's seal, the gateway that would take them out. The moment the light touched their faces, a collective sigh passed through the group.

Reinhardt stepped forward first. The seal pulsed in response, recognizing their completion of the Trial of Ascension. In a flash of white, the dungeon walls dissolved.

They emerged back into the academy's great hall. The sudden brightness stung their eyes, and the familiar scent of polished stone and parchment hit them all at once. Waiting at the center of the chamber, arms folded and eyes sharp, was Professor Calvus.

His gaze scanned the group, lingering on each of them in silence before finally resting on Reinhardt.

"You've returned," Calvus said, his tone calm but edged with something unreadable. "And by the looks of you… victorious."

Reinhardt straightened his posture, forcing back the fatigue. "The trial is complete, Professor. We held nothing back."

Calvus's lips curved into the faintest smile, though his eyes glimmered with calculation. "Good. Very good. You've stepped through the first gate. But remember—trials never truly end. The academy will test you in ways the dungeon never could."

Elira's grip on her spear tightened, Callen gave a cocky shrug, and Alden simply bowed his head respectfully.

The professor's cloak swept behind him as he turned. "Come. You'll report every detail of what transpired. And then… the academy will decide how to place you."

For a brief moment, Reinhardt glanced at his companions. They weren't just survivors anymore. They were something greater—bound by fire, shadow, and steel.

And as they followed Professor Calvus deeper into the academy's halls, Reinhardt felt it: this was only the beginning.
