Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The First Fracture

The cavern's oppressive silence shattered as the shadows lunged again, their forms splitting like smoke and reforming with each strike. Elira's spear glowed faintly, tracing arcs of light that carved through the darkness. Alden swung his axe in brutal, sweeping motions, keeping the rear safe. Callen, though pale, forced himself to stand his ground beside Reinhardt, his sword trembling yet unyielding.

Reinhardt's eyes darted between them, every movement calculated. He had fought trials before — alone, in another life — but this was different. This time, he was not the only one carrying the weight.

They're testing more than strength, he thought, parrying a shadow's strike with precise timing. This is meant to fracture us.

And it worked. The shadows whispered. Each one carried a voice — distorted, venomous.

"Elira… you've always longed to surpass your sister."

"Alden, they will abandon you, just like before."

"Callen, you are nothing but a coward hiding behind steel."

Callen froze at the words, his grip faltering. One shadow nearly pierced his chest before Reinhardt dragged him back, their blades clashing in a spray of sparks.

"Don't listen!" Reinhardt's voice cut through the chaos, sharper than his sword. "They want to break us apart. Hold the line!"

But he could see it — the first fracture forming. Fear in Callen's eyes. Doubt tightening Alden's jaw. Even Elira's thrusts lost their rhythm for a moment, her breath sharp and uneven.

Reinhardt clenched his teeth. If I fail here, the team will crumble. I can't allow it. Not again.

Summoning his strength, he drove his sword into the ground, releasing a wave of energy that momentarily scattered the shadows. In the fleeting stillness, his voice carried with unshakable resolve.

"This trial is not meant to be faced alone. Trust me — and trust yourselves. As long as we stand together, these things cannot touch us."

Elira glanced at him, the faintest smile flickering on her lips, before spinning her spear with renewed vigor. Alden roared and cleaved through a shadow, anchoring the formation. Even Callen, though trembling, tightened his stance and raised his blade again.

The shadows hissed, circling faster, their whispers growing harsher. But for the first time, the party's blades moved as one.

Reinhardt's gaze hardened. The Trial of Ascension had only just begun — but he had already decided.

No matter how cruel these tests became, he would not let his companions fall.
