Just as the senior was about to speak again, a new voice cut in.
"It's my turn."
A man who had been standing silently on the stage for some time finally spoke. Upon seeing who it was, the senior's expression visibly froze.
"President Horikita."
He immediately bowed, his tone filled with reverence. "First-year, come down with me. It's time for the student council president's speech."
Kiyomizu followed the boxing club captain down from the stage. He glanced back sharply, only then realizing—the person before him was the student council president who had given the speech at yesterday's opening ceremony, Manabu Horikita. He was also the older brother of his deskmate, Suzune Horikita.
"Senpai, you seem to be quite afraid of the student council president."
"You don't understand, Kiyomizu-kun! In this school, the student council's power is absolute. If you offend President Horikita..." The senior let out a long breath, wiping the cold sweat from his forehead with lingering fear. "Thankfully, the president was lenient. I almost crossed a red line just now."
"Anyway, I have high hopes for you, junior." The boxing club senior clapped Kiyomizu on the shoulder, his eyes shining with admiration. "This point subsidy is an exclusive offer. No one else gets this treatment." He lowered his voice and added mysteriously, "If it weren't for your special circumstances and your exceptional talent..."
With that, the senior walked towards the boxing club's recruitment table. Before turning away, he threw one last comment over his shoulder: "If you're interested, you're welcome to report to the boxing club anytime. Next month is fine too." He then confidently sat down at the recruitment table, looking as if he were certain Kiyomizu would join.
Kiyomizu gave him a nod. This senior was interesting, generously offering a 10,000-point monthly subsidy simply because he was a Class D student. Was his confident demeanor because he predicted Kiyomizu would inevitably face a point crisis next month?
The student council president began his speech, outlining the student council's activities and announcing their recruitment plans. "We are currently recruiting preparatory members," he said at a steady pace. "A more rigorous official selection will follow."
The president's gaze swept across the hall from behind his glasses, specifically emphasizing, "We do not welcome those with naive illusions, nor do we tolerate any blemishes." The implication was clear to Kiyomizu: only the elites from Class A and B would likely be qualified to enter the student council.
As he was leaving, a familiar figure caught his eye—Suzune Horikita was staring motionlessly at her brother. However, the student council president merely glanced at her for a moment before quickly looking away. A tragic, thick wall seemed to stand between the siblings.
...
In the blink of an eye, it was Friday. The intelligence that had refreshed over the past few days had been nothing but trivial, useless information. For example:
[Akito Miyake has joined the archery club.]
[Kanji Ike is desperate to find a girlfriend in high school.]
[Ken Sudo's entrance assessment: Intelligence - E | Academics - E | Physical Ability - A | Judgment - D+ | Cooperativeness - D]
It was all irrelevant personal privacy that was of no help to his current situation. In the end, intel was just intel. Kiyomizu understood this clearly—he never expected the daily updates to be immediately useful. After all, this was just the beginning; there were still three full years of high school ahead. The intel was merely a supplementary tool to give him an edge.
It was worth mentioning that he had officially joined the boxing club on Wednesday. Every day after school, Kiyomizu would train at the boxing club for two hours without fail. The captain had kept his promise, transferring 10,000 points to him on the day he joined.
The first week of training was somewhat unexpected. There were no sparring matches as he had anticipated, he hadn't even touched a punching bag or wrapped his hands. Instead, it was all tedious basic training: jump rope, jumping jacks, and other fundamental conditioning exercises, as well as footwork drills like forward and backward slides. According to the coach, Kiyomizu was progressing quickly. If he kept it up, he could be scheduled for a real match next month.
The final bell rang. As Kiyomizu was packing his textbooks, he heard the sound of light footsteps behind him.
"Kiyomizu-kun!" Kikyo Kushida leaned over, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Have you bought your boxing gloves yet?"
"Not yet," Kiyomizu replied, zipping up his bag. "I'm planning to buy them next month."
"In that case, can I come and watch when you have a match next month?" Kushida clasped her hands together, her eyes shining. "I've never seen a boy box in person before!"
"Of course," Kiyomizu nodded. "But I hear you have to buy a ticket with points."
According to the boxing club captain, although boxing was a niche sport in other high schools, it was a popular club at this school. Not only did it have a professional-grade ring, but it also occasionally held exhibition matches, and the spectator stands were often packed. The school administration had a tacit approval of this activity. The captain had told him that a former boxing club captain had spent a large number of points to get special, exclusive permission from the school.
(Of course, all spectators have to pay with points.)
As for the specific point distribution system, Kiyomizu wasn't entirely sure. He only knew that the fighters received a base appearance fee, and the winner would get additional personal points as a reward. It was this dual benefit that had convinced Kiyomizu to join—he could get stronger and earn points at the same time. A true win-win.
"Damn it! I want to join the boxing club too!" Haruki Yamauchi lamented, beating his chest. "But the captain said all the spots are full!"
"Yeah," Kanji Ike agreed, his eyes gleaming with longing. "Boxing coolly in the ring would definitely attract a lot of girls!"
The two of them whispered in a corner. In reality, the boxing club had fewer than twenty active members. The long-running exhibition matches featuring the same group of fighters had led to serious audience fatigue. It was this sense of crisis that had prompted the captain to scout for promising new talent among the first-years. Of course, the selection criteria were very strict. The primary condition was a long-term athletic background. Applicants whose punches were weak or who failed the fitness test were all rejected by the captain with the excuse that "we're not looking for new members right now."
