Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Mist

The System's silence broke.

Not like a notification.

Like a verdict.

Kousei stood still as the air around him changed.

Something fundamental had shifted.

Not in the world.

In how the world could be perceived.

SYSTEM UPDATE: SECOND GUARDIAN INHERITANCE UNLOCKED

Qualification Met:

Multiple child rescue completions Establishment of stable safe zone Sustained protection without casualties Emotional stability under threat conditions

Inheritance Granted

Mist Flame Synchronization: 15%

A strange sensation spread through Kousei's mind.

Not power entering his body.

But layers appearing over reality itself.

He saw it.

Not with his eyes.

But instinctively.

The world was no longer a single surface.

It was stacked.

Layer upon layer.

What was seen.

What was ignored.

What was misinterpreted.

What could be made to disappear.

Mist Flames weren't destruction.

They were editing reality's attention.

Kousei exhaled slowly.

"…So this is concealment."

[Correct.]

Then the second part activated.

Domain-Type Skill Acquired: "Veil of Lost Paths"

The valley shifted.

Not visually.

But conceptually.

If someone looked directly at this place…

Their mind would refuse to register it properly.

They would assume it was empty land.

Or already explored.

Or not worth attention.

Kousei stared outward toward the forest.

"…It makes people look away."

[Yes.]

A pause.

Then—

Warning: This does not prevent intentional pursuit from high-tier individuals.

Kousei nodded once.

"…It slows them."

That was enough.

For now.

Because time was survival.

And survival meant children lived.

Behind him, the orphanage was waking up.

Children laughing.

Water being carried.

Food being prepared.

Tama shouting instructions at people who were clearly ignoring her.

Normal.

Almost.

Kousei turned slightly.

The Mist Flame subtly responded to his intent.

Not visibly forming barriers.

But quietly folding perception away from the valley's edges.

A hidden place.

A place that should not be noticed unless forced.

"…Good."

Then—

A new presence entered the outer edge of the veil.

Not hostile.

Not subtle.

Just… lost.

Kousei paused.

His head tilted slightly.

"…Someone crossed it."

But immediately—

He corrected himself.

"No."

He felt it more clearly now.

The veil hadn't been broken.

It had been walked through normally.

As if guided.

A familiar voice echoed from the forest moments later.

"HEY—WHERE AM I?!"

Kousei closed his eyes.

"…Of course."

Footsteps.

Confused shouting.

Then—

Tama appeared from the trees.

Holding someone's hand.

A tall young man.

Straw hat.

Sunburned expression.

Clearly exhausted from wandering.

Portgas D. Ace

Ace blinked.

"…What the hell?"

He looked around.

Then behind him.

Then forward again.

"I swear I was just walking and then—"

Tama nodded seriously.

"You were lost."

"I was NOT lost."

"You were."

Ace opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

"…Okay I might've been a little lost."

Tama nodded like this confirmed everything important in life.

"Then you come with me."

"Wait—what?"

"You look hungry."

"I'm fine—"

"You are coming."

And just like that…

Ace was dragged into the orphanage.

Kousei watched silently from a distance.

He didn't move.

Didn't interrupt.

Because he already understood what had happened.

Ace hadn't "discovered" them.

He had been allowed in.

The Mist Veil had not rejected him.

Which meant one thing:

Kousei narrowed his eyes slightly.

"…He's not treated as a threat."

That alone was valuable information.

Tama arrived at the yard proudly.

"I found him!"

Silence.

Then she smiled brightly.

"Can we keep him?"

Kousei exhaled slowly.

"…That is not how people work."

Ace scratched his head awkwardly.

"…Yeah, I'd prefer not being kept."

Kousei finally stepped forward.

Now fully aware of everything.

Mist Flame still subtly active around the valley.

Veil of Lost Paths still distorting perception beyond the trees.

He looked at Ace.

Then at Tama.

Then back again.

"…You brought him inside the protected zone."

"Yes."

Tama nodded immediately.

Kousei closed his eyes for a moment.

Then spoke calmly.

"Tama."

"Yes?"

"This place exists because children cannot protect themselves."

Tama listened quietly.

"Every unknown person is a risk."

His gaze shifted slightly toward Ace.

"Even if they are not dangerous."

Ace raised a hand.

"…Hey, I'm right here."

Kousei ignored him.

"Do you understand why this is dangerous?"

Tama hesitated.

"…Because he could tell bad people?"

"Yes."

Silence.

Then Kousei softened his tone slightly.

"But."

"You still acted from kindness."

Tama nodded.

"…He looked lost."

"I understand."

Kousei knelt slightly to her level.

"But kindness without caution can still cause harm."

Tama looked down.

"…I'm sorry."

Kousei placed a hand on her head.

"Do you understand now?"

She thought for a moment.

Then nodded.

"…Yes."

"Good."

Then he stood.

Now looking at Ace properly.

Mist Flame subtly reacted.

Not aggressively.

But measuring.

"…Portgas D. Ace."

Ace blinked.

"…Yeah?"

"I know who you are."

Ace paused.

"…That's not creepy at all."

Kousei ignored the comment.

"You are not supposed to be here in any predictable timeline path yet."

Ace frowned.

"…That makes it sound like I'm a problem."

Kousei nodded once.

"You are."

Ace sighed.

"…Fair."

A pause.

Kousei studied him for a moment longer.

Then made a decision.

"…You may stay temporarily."

Ace blinked.

"…Just like that?"

Kousei nodded.

"But you will not move freely."

"And you will not leave the valley alone."

Ace scratched his head.

"…That's… honestly reasonable."

Tama immediately lit up.

"YAY! NEW FRIEND!"

Kousei immediately corrected:

"That is not a classification."

Tama ignored him completely.

Kousei turned slightly away, eyes shifting toward the forest line.

Because now everything had changed slightly.

Mist Flame held the valley hidden.

The Veil distorted perception.

Children were safe.

For now.

But something had been added to the system.

A fire-user.

A future anchor point.

A man tied to storms that had not yet arrived.

And Kousei knew one thing clearly:

"This place is no longer just hidden."

"It is becoming a target."

Somewhere far away…

The world adjusted again.

A hidden settlement now existed in Wano.

One that erased itself from notice.

One that protected children.

And now—

One that had hosted a major pirate anomaly.

Reports began to move.

Silently.

Upward.

Toward forces that did not ignore such things.

And Kousei stood in the middle of it all.

Watching over children who finally believed they were safe.

For now.
