Chapter 1 – When the Sky Fell
Amara had always believed life was supposed to make sense.
You work hard. You pray. You hope.
And somehow, everything should fall into place.
But at seventeen, she was already learning the hardest
truth life doesn't always care about plans.
The rain came without warning. It was heavy.
Thunder roared above Makoko's floating shacks as she clutched her school notes, running barefoot through the muddy compound. Tomorrow was supposed to be her big day the inter-school debate competition, her one chance to shine.
But life… had other plans.
Inside their small home, the air smelled of kerosene and wet clothes. Her father sat hunched over the old transistor radio, face pale, hands trembling slightly. Her mother stood by the window, silent, worried.
Papa?Amara whispered.
Did it happen?
Her father nodded slowly.
They let me go.He said, voice cracking.
The silence that followed was louder than the storm outside.
Amara felt her chest tighten. Dreams felt… distant now.
Bills,Rent, Food. Everything was about to change.
That night, she lay on her thin mattress, staring at the cracked ceiling. Her fingers tightened around her debate notes. Her heart pounded with fear and fire.
Tomorrow wasn't just another day.
Tomorrow was survival.
Suddenly, a scream tore through the night.
Sharp. Panicked. Close.
Amara shot up from her bed, heart pounding.
Something was wrong.
Terribly wrong.
