Chapter 3 - Before The Story Begins (Dancing Lights)

Jane was laying on her large bed reading the latest fiction, she was having a hard time absorbing the current romantic descriptions. She couldn't help comparing the speed at which the characters in the book developed their relation to hers…

"It's been three months already. Shouldn't we have gotten past the kissing and holding hands phase?"

Jane and Redgwrick have been steadily developing their relationship. Going on dates over the weekends and at the end of each one would tentatively kiss the other.

On one particularly bold night Jane daringly kissed him in the 'Halls of Hearing' their place of work. If only she knew how conservative Redgwrick was she wouldn't be questioning her beauty.

Flipping the pages of the book. 'I wonder if this is how romance should be?'

It's not that our progress has been bad…it's been great.' Putting the book down to get ready 'is it selfish that I want…more?'

With a huff of air she dawned a pearl white sun dress that exposed her shoulders and back. Pinning her silver hair into a 'messy bun' with a bright yellow hair pin.

Looking into the full body mirror she smiles. 'I hope he likes this.'

Standing at the bottom of the stairs waiting for Jane was a tall roguish man with immaculately groomed raven black hair. Contrasted by a light knit sweater tucked into his cream colored trousers and well shined dress shoes.

His appearance flowed, If someone was looking they would be drawn to his eyes. Black as the night sky with shades of blue and starlight. 'I hope she approves of today's outing.'

Before he was overtaken by worry he heard a delicate voice call his name

"...Red."

He turned to see what he could only describe as purity incarnate.

His breath caught in the back of his throat while looking at her. Feeling his heart rate increase. 'That hasn't happened in a while.' he watched her slowly approach.

Jane took his hand. "How do I look?"

Redgwrick stumbled on his words "You look absolutely…huh?"

After forgetting to speak, he finished what he was going to say. "I don't have the words to describe how beautiful you are. I almost don't want anyone else to see you today haha..."

'In Fact that's exactly what I'm going to do.'

Jane's POV

"So how do I look?" She was elated that he found her so striking. Her worries from a few moments ago evaporated giving her a chance to take in his appearance.

His well groomed hair matching his dark sparkling eyes and sharp features, his gentle scent of lavender and pine.

So many words came to mind when trying to describe him. Mysterious, deliberate, unexpectedly kind, Beautiful.

But one came to mind more than others…"Mine."

Redgwrick "what was that?"

"huh?" releasing she said the last part out loud a brush of pink appeared on her cheeks. "Nothing! Lest be on our way shall we."

Redgwrick smiled and guided her by her waist to the door. "Absolutely, I hope today is to your liking."

"Hmpf, well see." A small smile betrays her.

Walking in step with each other Jane was enjoying the rare warmth from the sun. It is usually always overcast and cold in the Empire.

These fleeting summer days are a commodity to be cherished. "I wish I could live in a place where the sun and its rays is a common occurrence."

Jane looked up at Redgwrick with a look of surprise, not expecting something like that to leave his mouth. But also understanding.

"Me too, I have grown tired of the constant cold…"

Jane was thinking about the future when she was hit by a smell of something delicious and meaty. letting her instinct guide the way she came across a small food stand among the bustling fair with its colorful banners and smoke billowing out from it.

She looks up at Redgwrick with expecting eyes.

"Alright, alright we can check it out, I am a little hungry as well."

Jane's eyes gleamed with joy and anticipation.

The food stand was serving something called variety skewers. Heavily seasoned and fire roasted meats and veggies were layered together on a stick. They looked rustic but delicious nonetheless.

Jane opted for a skewer with extra meat while Redgwrick took an extra spicy extra veggie assortment. Something about the heat of the food mixing with the heat of the sun felt comforting to both.

With the sun still high in the sky the couple continued their walk to the destination Redgwrick had prepared. Enjoying the small stands here and there, stopping to watch street performers.

They finally reached their destination with the evening sun's colors dancing with the trees and gardens before them.

Jane stopped to look where Red had taken her. It was the 'Spectrum Gardens.' She was awestruck for a moment.

looking at Red with excitement she quickly embraced him with a hug "thank you…I have been wanting to come here for so long."

Redgwrick let out a sigh of relief. "I'm glad you like it, I heard they managed to import a Ember infused willow tree."

Separating from her embrace they walked through the gate and started walking on the warm lit path, "we made it just in time to witness the transition."

Right now the garden was beautiful with its separated gardens each a single color. Hues of blues, yellows, pinks, purples, whites and multitude of darker shades. It seemed every color of flower or tree was here.

The name Spectrum garden was coined by the transition that happened from high noon to late evening when the sun hit at an angle. The gardens would let off their respected colored light.

Trails would materialize and connect the patches of flowers and trees turning the floral gardens into a once in a lifetime light show. Covering, some would say 'the entire color spectrum.' Even the ones undiscovered.

Walking on the brick pathway the evening sun started hitting the gardens, creating an archway of color rays illuminating their way.

Jane moved closer wrapping both her arms around Red's. With a smile that rivaled the heavenly light before them.

"This place is beautiful Red, it makes you feel good about the world…thank you." she said in almost a whisper. "I won't ever forget this."

Redgwrick looked into Jane's silver eyes that reflected and somehow absorbed all the colors dancing around them, making them look like a cosmos cloud.

"You speak as if this will be a one time occurrence. My dear Jane, I tend to spoil the people close to me." With a mischievous smile and a squeeze of his hand. "Hehe, I look forward to that."

A light event spurred around them creating a vortex of light, coalescing above them. Reds, blues, pinks, magentas, indigo, every color you could think of was there.

Almost dancing, dancing for them alone.
