Chapter 2 - Familiarity

He was awake.

Just like that; a singular gasp and he shot upwards, expecting to be laid in his bed after the nightmare ended only to find himself endlessly falling forwards. His sudden jerk forwards upon regaining consciousness left him spinning in a pure white void. Lacking gravity and awareness of his surroundings, the boy attempted to orient himself in order to diminish his confusion... however that was rather difficult considering the constant spinning which made him cover his mouth from the feeling of his body's rising displeasure.

All of a sudden, the boy's movement was halted by a collision with some kind of object behind him and despite the pain that was no pulsing through his head, he was thankful to have stopped spinning at the very least. After composing himself, the boy observed his surroundings... nothing but white as far as the eye could see. He looked at the object his body he was resting back against, it looked the same as everywhere else, it was then that he realised that his depth perception would not be of much use as he couldn't even tell what he was making contact with in such an environment.

"I must be dreaming, what the hell is all this?" The boy asked himself aloud, bringing his hand up to his face only to realise that his skin was as white as snow, his unzipped jacket which was once blue was also now a light shade of grey and the same went for his shirt underneath and every piece of clothing below that was now pitch-black.

"Definitely dreaming." He spoke to himself once more after a moment of panic before looking around again only to find more of the same... except for a tiny speck of something that seemed far off in the distance. Figuring he had nothing else to do, the boy tried to determine an angle at which to push himself towards the speck before pressing his feet against the object behind him, breathing in and pushing away from it with all of his might. Although he was not able to see himself moving forwards that well, he could feel it; his clothes and hair pulling back slightly as he continued to move and reach his hand out towards the speck in the distance.

It took well over a minute of constant movement before the strange object in the distance became much clearer; it was some kind of red-coloured orb flying away at nearly the same speed that the boy was travelling. He strained his arm, attempting to reach for the orb as he drew closer... only to find that the angle he chose to launch himself at wasn't perfect and led to him passing by the orb, his fingers just grazing it but not enough to pull it closer. The boy held his hand out as he watched the orb fly by... before it began moving towards him, strange red sparks began to emit from both his hand and the orb.

Before he could even react to this happening, the orb landed perfectly in his open palm to which he swiftly wrapped his fingers around it. Confused, the boy turned his hand around and looked deeply into his new possession.

It looked almost exactly like it did from afar; a crimson orb made of some kind of crystal or glass, however new details were made apparent as he examined it closely such as the fact that the shade of its colouring shifted over time with it almost seeming as if the orb itself contained some kind of smoke which rolled over itself in its container. Even stranger was the fact that the smoke within appeared to form shapes, some of which the boy recognised from somewhere.

At first there was some kind of long, thin object that appeared almost like a staff with three petal-like spikes jutting out of the bottom end whilst the top was curved, forming a C-shape. Then, the shape changed, it began to resemble an extravagant sword with the hilt sharply turning upwards at the ends to resemble spikes along with multiple more spikes coming from the top end of the hilt... the blade too had spikes along it, it seemed more like an extreme intimidation tactic that was going way too over the top. Finally, the smoke changed shape once more and the boy looked intently to see what it would form next... only for a single slit to form in the smoke before it rapidly began moving around. It took a second for him to recognise what it was and by the time he did, it was staring him right in the face; an eye.

He recoiled backwards at the sudden realisation that an eye from within the orb was now gazing at him and as he did so, he felt all of his momentum suddenly stop as a light emitted from the orb. Now utterly confused, the boy looked around in wonder and terror as he didn't expect such a thing to be possible. His eyes snapped to the object in his hand, meeting its own gaze as he struggled to decide whether he could feel ill intent coursing through its unwavering stare or if that was just his own paranoia.

"H-hello?" He simply asked which didn't seem to merit any response.

"Can you hear me... or understand me at all?" He continued to which the eye looked up and down twice over as if to imitate a nod. Getting such a response shocked him slightly as he was half expecting it to not be capable of communication. He took a moment to consider what he would say next.

"Can you speak at all?" He inquired to which he got a 'nod' in return once more.

"Oh, good, can I hear you? It would be nice to have some company." He politely requested, a small smile appearing on his face as he thought that the orb was oddly cute by communicating through just an eye. The eye began moving in ways that seemed to mimic the way a very animated person's might when talking but no sounds were heard at all. The boy stuttered a few times, not wishing to 'interrupt' it before finally speaking.

"I-I'm sorry but I can't hear you at all and I don't think we're going to get very far if you can only move about like that." He explained, not wanting to seem rude. The eye suddenly stopped, looking back at him with what he could only assume was a glare before it rolled similar to... well, an eye rolling in annoyance.

All of a sudden, the orb began to glow once more, this time delivering a shock to the boy's hand, causing him to jump and accidentally drop the orb before quickly reaching for it before it drifted away from him.

"Ow! What was-" He began saying before a cloud of red smoke emerged from the orb, quickly spiralling upwards before dissipating just as fast, revealing a ghostly-looking figure. They appeared slightly transparent, being completely red just like the orb and looked to be wearing some kind of robes with metallic accessories along their arms. The only other features that he could make out besides from the strange cloth around them that seemed to form some kind of torn and tattered dress were high-heels made from a similar metallic material to the accessories, a hood and a mask over their face of which the mask looked identical to the eye that was once within the orb.

"There we go, is that any better?" The figure asked with a feminine-sounding voice as their hand rested on their hip. He took a moment to compose himself at the emergence of what appeared to be a spirit right in front of him... and one that he did admit in his mind looked at the very least slightly attractive despite not being able to see many of their actual features.

"I... I'm Lukas Ruston, nice to meet you." He spoke, offering his hand to his new acquaintance as a show of friendship. She looked down at his hand, the eye on her mask actually moving with her line of vision which surprised Lukas.

"Seriously?" She asked with what sounded like disappointment in her voice as she extended her own hand to show that hers phased right through his. Lukas coughed awkwardly, pulling his hand away as he looked away, slightly embarrassed. With a sigh and what sounded like a bit of a chuckle, she responded.

"I'm Bethany Calamierre, don't ask for instructions on how to pronounce or spell my last name, you're not getting any and everyone normally gets it wrong anyways." She explained in a voice that helped to sell the idea that this was a regular occurrence for her.

"Should someone survive the destruction of their own universe, they will end up in a much wider and emptier space which many know as The Multiverse; a vast space lacking many of the concepts beings are used to like gravity, space and time. As the name implies, The Multiverse contains a countless number of universes with each universe usually containing similar creatures and individuals to each other but with slight differences each time... although there have been outliers to this fact."
