Chapter 6 - Adam.exe Has Stopped Working

-Badheil (Doppleganger)-

"Ahg! P-p-lease s-spare m-me."

Badheil tilted his head as looked at the man he held by the neck. The man was no grand captain, just another salt-bitten marauder. His hair hung in wet, matted ropes, a beard patchy with grime. One eye was clouded white, the other wide with terror, and his tattered coat still stank of rum and smoke. Gold teeth flashed between cracked lips as he gasped, flailing weakly in the air.

The only reason the man was able to get out a full sentence was because Badheil had a question to ask, one that had only just resurfaced in his memory.

"What month and day is it?" He already knew the year. The original Badheil had paid attention to that much, since the world was on a timer because of the apocalypse.

1349, the year Klein transmigrated. But the month and day remained a mystery to him.

The man blinked in confusion, but when the grip around his neck tightened, he quickly croaked out, "J-July 5th—"

The moment the words left his lips the pirate wasn't given a chance. His neck was snapped, his body going limp before being tossed aside like waste.

Badheil's gaze swept over the deck, the boards slick with blood. Corpses sprawled where they fell, faces frozen in terror. His work was clean and efficient. Some had their skulls burst apart from a single punch, others dangled with broken necks, and a minor few were killed with the instant death dagger that he had several dozen of.

By the count, there were at least twenty more bodies than the second feat had registered. Seventy was not a milestone number, he'd probably need thirty more kills to get another feat.

Not that Badheil intended to actively pursue that milestone, it was simply something worth noting.

With the sort of individuals who inhabited this world, from organizations like the Indulgence Faction of the Rose School of Thought to the countless pirates roaming the seas, it was inevitable that his kill count would eventually climb to a hundred. And from there, it could very well multiply tenfold, reaching into the thousands. That was just the nature of this grimdark world, whose very foundations—as Klein once said in canon—were madness, chaos, and horror.

Badheil shook himself free from the creeping pull of numbers and milestones, from the strangely comfortable current of homicidal musings that should have disturbed him but didn't. Perhaps it was his divinity, perhaps simply because he was Badheil. Either way, these people didn't even deserve him feeling guilty or disgusted at taking their lives. Rather—

"They should be honoured that they got killed by me." He snorted in amusement at the thought, but truly, how many people could say they made a god descend just to kill them?

He turned his head, ears pricking toward the sounds below deck, or rather, the absence of them. Though, he wasn't too worried that Ymir got taken down, cause if she had, the dozen or pirates below would have begun running to the deck.

Moreover, two of the Beyonders had already been cut down before the rampage even began, the captain in his cabin, and first mate who was crushed by the door. Badheil himself had dealt with the second mate, prying out what he needed first: the count of the Beyonders aboard. Just five in total—the captain at Sequence 8, the rest at Sequence 9. Captain, first mate, second, third, and the boatswain.

Two Beyonders remained only, nothing Ymir couldn't manage. And with twenty or so ordinary cutthroats remaining? Even with muskets, they were less than an afterthought.

After she killed the First Mate by smashing him with the door, he had handed her a vial of shimmering gold, the Felix Felicis he'd been surprised to discover he could brew with the Dragon Vessel Cauldron.

But unlike in Harry Potter, the potion only lasted for an hour instead of the usual twelve hours if the whole vial was drunk. So, for an hour, Ymir would see and feel the right path to success, and combined with her strength, enough to contend with even a Sequence 8 of the Twilight Giant pathway, she was as close to untouchable on the ship.

"Hm~ I wonder if she could beat the current me with those two combinations?" Badheil mused idly. His present strength couldn't even compare to Ymir's base half-Sequence 9, at best, he was only at peak human level. But even then, if you considered her current strength, defeating her would be no issue for him.

No, what truly piqued his curiosity was whether his present self could be considered AbsolutePower in the face of luck. Felix Felicis worked in a way that Luck can help you succeed where success is possible, but not where it's magically or physically impossible.

This limitation was likely why the potion was ranked below Legendary.

And what Badheil wondered was whether success was even possible for Ymir against his current self, who could draw upon divine-level spirituality, thought processes, and combat experience.

"…Probably not." He shook his head with a chuckle. He was rambling again. "Let's just roll. I've got quite a few tickets." His eyes shifted to the screen listing his rewards.

Random Platinum Ticket x1

Silver Ability Ticket x3

Silver Item Ticket x1

Bronze Ability Ticket x1

"With four ability tickets, that makes five abilities in total. A new slot will unlock." Which meant Badheil could create another Doppelganger, since the ability scaled with the number of unlocked slots. "And with my mental capabilities, handling another Doppelgänger isn't the issue. The only problem is…"

His gaze fell to the unassuming black Ring of Suppression on his finger. He only had one, but the more he thought about it, the more he realized it might not matter much. After all, the body he was currently using was just a puppet. His soul wasn't inside it, only his mind. The only ones capable of realizing the truth would be the high-Sequence Beyonders of the Mother, Death, and Visionary pathways.

The first two dealt with Souls, while the latter could dive into the Body of Heart and Mind.

So, in truth, he could send down a second Doppelganger without much concern, so long as he didn't attract the gaze of a god.

Anyways, he digressed.

"Roll Platinum."

Rolling….

Epic Item Rolled!

[Trait Ticket]

Epic Item

A ticket that acts as a 6x Advantage Platinum Trait Gacha Ticket

Badheil paused, frozen for a moment, before a grin spread across his lips. "Finally… something that can give me a real game-changer." He watched as the words vanished, being replaced by a large amount of text.

Rolling….

[Nightmare]

Epic Trait

Race(Tsukihime) - You are a special kind of vampire known as a Nightmare born from the blood of a Dead Apostle. As a Nightmare, you possess superhuman physical and magical abilities and have rewinding regeneration as long as you have blood. In addition, as a high-rank vampire, you can turn people into ghouls and have your own unique Elite rank ability you can use without an ability slot. You can get stronger and eventually evolve to the next stage of undeath by consuming enough blood.

[Stable]

Uncommon Trait

You will never lose your balance from anything short of your legs getting sheared off.

[Esper]

Elite Trait

You are a naturally born Esper, abilities are second nature to you. You understand, develop, and master abilities far faster and you possess a unique intuition when it comes to your abilities. Ability cooldowns are halved.

[Skyward]

Elite Trait

You belong to the skies, all wind-based abilities are more potent, cost less energy to use, and are easier to master. In addition, you recover energy faster when in the sky.

[Ghoul]

Elite Trait

Race(Tokyo Ghoul) - You are a ghoul, a flesh-eating superhuman with a powerful and flexible unique organ named a Kagune of your choosing. As a ghoul, you also possess formidable regeneration. But as a downside, you cannot digest anything other than human flesh and if you don't dine for longer than two weeks you will slowly enter a feral state.

[Brand of Tzeentch]

Epic Trait

Warhammer 40k - You wear the brand of Tzeentch, the Changer of Ways. Greatly speeding up your comprehension and learning abilities. Allowing you to improve in skill and magic far faster. In addition, you are capable of spells that you otherwise wouldn't be able to learn due to restrictions like racial differences. Note: Brands do not connect you to the Chaos Gods or Warp.

Pick 1 Trait.

The Twilight Giant instantly ruled out all the other Traits in favor of the two Epics. Esper wasn't bad, but Badheil didn't think he'd rely on Abilities as much as his own Beyonder powers. The only Abilities that interested him were the ones useful in niche situations, things he couldn't already do, like Doppelganger. Something like Holy Flames was pointless when he already had purification covered.

As for Skyward? Well, his name was Badheil, not Leodero. No reason to even consider it.

Next came Ghoul. Becoming a white-haired emo restricted to coffee and flesh wasn't on his list of ambitions.

Badheil's eyes fell back on the two Epic Traits. This was a Gacha. The proper way forward was obvious:

"Eenie, meenie, miney, moe—"

Brand of Tzeentch.

What? Did you really think he'd gamble on something as important as this?

And the reason why he picked Brand of Tzeentch over being a vampire was simple.

"The Brand will let me learn the spells of other Pathways." For instance, the Sun Pathway spells starting at Sequence 8: Light Supplicant and beyond. Or the Death Pathway spells unlocked at Sequence 4: Undying, especially this Pathway, with Blessing of Izanami, its spells would be the easiest to pick up.

Nightmare was only a fleeting consideration, but even that stirred anger in him. At first, the reaction puzzled Badheil. Then he remembered Lilith. Of course, rage at the thought of becoming the same race as his mother's killer was perfectly reasonable.

Still—

"I need to deal with my predecessor's goals quickly before His emotions bleed into me." It felt like walking a tightrope. One misstep, and he'd plunge into the abyss that was the original Badheil's memories.

Badheil's memories, and the Original Creator's will…

At least he didn't have it as bad as Klein and Adam—or rather, the Ancient Sun God—who would soon be locked in a struggle against the active wills of the Primordial God Almighty and the Celestial Worthy.

He paused. His main body in the Astral World turned its gaze toward his Doppelganger, and after spotting no white-robed, blond-haired priest, he let out a sigh of relief.

"I think the Chaos Gacha is giving me strange urges." Said urge? Testing whether Adam could sense the thoughts of his Doppelganger body while his main body used Mind Concealment.

Unsurprisingly, He couldn't. As Badheil surmised, the Doppelganger was nothing more than a flesh puppet, a soulless husk controlled by him, a god.

"It seems some of my Beyonder powers can be accessed this way," Stroking his chin, he mentally signaled the Gacha to roll the rest of his tickets.

"Worthless." Badheil said without any heat in his voice. And it wasn't just because he was too overpowered for these abilities, but also because he couldn't even use them—Doppleganger didn't allow it. After all, it was still only a Rare-rated Ability. He guessed he'd need at least an Epic-grade version before he could properly use both his abilities and Beyonder powers.

"Hm?" The sound of multiple footsteps broke Badheil from his thoughts, making him turn around. Six new figures followed behind Ymir, each one staring at him warily with weapons—pirate muskets and swords—clutched tightly in their hands.

Four young women and two young men. From their builds, it was clear all of them were Feysacian, and with how closely they stood beside Ymir, they were likely from the same village.

"You didn't leave any alive, did you?" The Twilight Giant asked. Ymir, now clothed in a pirate's shirt and trousers, shook her head and showed him his instant death dagger—he really needed a better name for it—before simply saying,

"Killed." She moved to step forward and return the dagger, but the two boys immediately stood protectively in front of her.

"Who are you?" The one who spoke had tousled sandy-blond hair that fell messily around his head, and his gold eyes glared fiercely as he gripped his dagger.

"Ymir, even if he helped us, we don't know if he's any different from the pirates." The other young man was calmer. His brown hair was hidden beneath a fur hat, and like the first, he had gold eyes. His finger rested on the trigger of a musket pointed toward the ground.

What's with half of them having gold eyes? Badheil raised an eyebrow, noting that one of the young women shared the same color and eyes as the fur-hatted youth—likely his elder sister.

"Erik. Luka." A soft yet firm voice called the two young men, "You're being disrespectful to His Excellency." Their postures stiffened as they heard the capitalisation of the pronoun and the title.

So Ymir told them, hm? Badheil tilted his head toward the speaker. Unlike the others, her appearance was distinct. Long twilight-colored hair framed a face both elegant and severe. Her violet eyes regarded him with a storm of emotions: caution, fear, awe, confusion, and… calculation.

"His Excellency?" A chuckle slipped from the red-eyed giant's lips, bemusing the group. "Would you call someone whose head could be blown off by a musket 'His Excellency'? Do you think Angels are that mortal?" He questioned, finding the mix of shock, confusion, and skepticism on their faces amusing.

Why reveal his weakness? For one, Badheil wasn't a power tripper. And two, he was expressing his humanity. Using a title meant for Angels and Gods could warp his perception and mentality in the long run.

Those were the main reasons. And he definitely wasn't secretly hoping Luka—the fur-hatted boy—would shoot him in the head so he could test whether his Doppleganger still worked without one.

"Surtr." Seeing their befuddled looks, Badheil helped them out, "You can call me Surtr, and like you, I'm Feysacian."

"Then, Lord Surtr…" The bronze-skinned man raised an eyebrow at the title but didn't protest, watching as the violet-haired woman nodded thoughtfully before asking, "Would it be fine if we followed you?"

"Elena!" The group, save for Ymir, looked at the woman in alarm at her arbitrary decision.

"What?" Elena raised an elegant brow, speaking evenly. "Look around you." She gestured toward the dozens of corpses littering the deck, drawing winces from some. "These scum razed our village, raped and killed our families. What do we have to return to? What do we have left to live for?"

None of them said anything, and the thought instead brought them to silent tears.

"And yet," The violet-eyed woman's tone turned soft, "These same scum that numbered almost in the hundreds were single handedly killed by Lord Sutr."

Badheil could already see where this was going, and he didn't mind. A lone journey was boring, and truth be told, he didn't know how to sail a ship.

"You may follow me." He nodded at her request, "I take it you want to become a Beyonder?"

Elena nodded, "Yes. We want supernatural powers like those pirates had, so we're never helpless again." She looked at Ymir, who stepped forward to him, continuing, "Just like Ymir, we want to tear people like them to shreds with our bare hands."

Ymir reached into the pocket of her coat and produced four Beyonder Characteristics, handing them to Badheil.

Feat Achieved! Gain a Beyonder Characteristic!

Feat Achieved! Start a Pirate Crew!

"1 Folk of Rage, 2 Sailors, and 1 Apothecary." Badheil mused aloud, before pausing in realisation. "One is missing." His eyes—both his main body and doppelgänger's—snapped to Ymir. "Why did you consume it?"

At his question, the atmosphere turned tense, and he noted how their grasp on their weapons tightened. The God of Combat rolled his eyes at their overreaction, he was simply curious.

The previous illusory dim twilight in his perception that Ymir represented was now more solid and brighter, an indicator that she was now a Beyonder.

A Warrior.

"I felt it calling me," Ymir hesitated, searching for the right words. "It felt right."

"I see." And he did. It was the Law of Beyonder Characteristic Convergence at work, likely aided by Felix Felicis.

Did this mean that if someone drank Felix Felicis before consuming a Sequence Potion or raw Characteristic, their advancement would be guaranteed? After all, advancement was always a matter of probability, and it was never a zero. The possibility of success is always there. There was no Absolute Power preventing it. Even the imprints of a predecessor in the Characteristic only lowered success rates, not eliminated them.

Badheil smiled at the discovery. "You've given me something interesting to consider. Thank you." He patted Ymir's head. "But next time, don't consume a Beyonder Characteristic raw. It should be brewed into a potion with supplementary ingredients. Otherwise, you risk losing control and becoming a mindless monster that kills everything in sight. And even with the potion, the risk remains."

"…Okay." Ymir looked between his hand and his face. He ruffled her hair once more before withdrawing.

Badheil turned to the others, who were still processing the revelation that becoming a Beyonder carried such risks. "Before we lose ourselves in conversation, let's first clear the corpses and set sail. The Gargas Archipelago is a pirate playground, we'll need to be careful."

The Feysacian's straightened at his words, and after exchanging glances with each other, they started getting to work.

"Here I was beginning to think Vaunt was not working," Badheil muttered, tilting his head at the Warrior who stayed behind. "Is something wrong, Ymir?"

Ymir handed him Last Verdict—yes, he'd finally settled on a name for the dagger.

"Keep it. I have plenty more." He pulled another dagger from his Gacha inventory. When Ymir saw it, she withdrew her hand and hooked the dagger at her hip instead.

"Come along," Badheil said, turning. "Let's not dawdle. We made this mess; it's our responsibility to clean it up."
