Chapter 12 - Chapter-12 A Home Lost, A Purpose Found

The monocar was a sleek, silent fortress. It was a world away from the dirt, the trees, and the constant hum of the wilderness. Alex Pariaha sat beside me, his gratitude a constant, buzzing energy. He talked about his work, about the chaos of the city, about the near-miss on the road. I just sat there, my hands on my knees, my mind a million miles away, watching the landscape change. The tall, green trees slowly gave way to smaller, manicured ones. The air began to taste different, laced with the scent of exhaust and dust. Sky sat on the dashboard, completely still, his black eyes watching the passing world with a fierce, quiet curiosity.

The trip felt both like a single minute and a lifetime. We pulled into a suburban area, the houses growing in size, the lawns perfectly trimmed. My heart started to hammer against my ribs. I knew this place. I knew this street. It was just a few blocks away. My palms were sweaty. I was here. I was home.

We turned a corner, and the world just… stopped. Alex brought the monocar to a silent halt. He looked at me, then at the empty space in front of us. My stomach dropped into a cold, empty pit. There was no house. My house, the one I had lived in since I was born, was gone. Just a flattened lot, with a few pieces of rubble and a faded 'For Sale' sign sticking out of the ground. The trees in the yard were gone, the fence was gone, everything was gone. The place I had dreamed of, the place I had run away from, the place I was supposed to be running back to... it was just a void.

I didn't say anything. I couldn't. The world was a spinning, silent vortex of shock. All those memories—my parents' smiling faces in the doorway, the last fight I had with them before I left for my summer break, the sound of the front door closing—they were all just... gone. Erased.

Alex, seeing the silent horror on my face, slowly reached out and placed a hand on my shoulder. "I... I'm so sorry," he whispered, his voice thick with sympathy. He looked at the emptiness, then back at my face, a new expression of grim resolve settling over his features. "After what you did for me... I can't leave you here. Not like this. My father is one of the largest businessmen in the state of Italy. He owns businesses in everything from tech to real estate. He's always looking for capable people."

He paused, a flicker of an idea in his eyes. He looked at my tattered clothes, then at Sky, then back at my hands, which were still calloused and scarred from the wilderness.

"I need a security guard. A personal one. Someone I can trust with my life. Someone who can handle himself. You... you saved me without a weapon. You're a natural." He looked at me, his eyes earnest and sincere. "I can offer you a job. A place to stay. A salary. I can make sure you're safe. Please. It would be my honor."

My breath hitched. A job? As a security guard? All my life, I had been "Bhosty," a useless coward. But now, in the face of my past being completely erased, a new door was opening. I had lost everything. But I had a new purpose. A new mission. A new beginning. I looked at the empty lot, at the ghost of my home, then at Alex, who was offering me a way out. I looked down at Sky, who had hopped off the dashboard and was now sitting on my lap. He chirped softly, a small, encouraging sound. I had no home to go back to. My past was a phantom. But my future... my future had just been handed to me, and it was a new kind of adventure.
