The word "Queen" still echoed in Aria's mind long after the hallway went quiet again. Her body felt stiff, her heart racing like it wanted to break out of her chest. She leaned against the wall, trying to stop her knees from shaking.
Sebastian and Lorenzo had already stormed into the hall, their footsteps heavy, their guns drawn. The sound of doors slamming open carried through the house, bedroom doors, closets, even storage cupboards. They searched like men possessed.
Aria forced herself to move. She walked slowly, her bare feet cold against the polished wooden floor. Every step felt like walking into a trap. She wanted to stay in her room where it was at least familiar, but something stronger pulled her forward.
"Stay here, Aria!" Sebastian barked when he saw her step into the hall. His voice was sharp, but his eyes betrayed the fear burning inside him.
"I won't," she whispered, her voice shaky but stubborn. "If he's watching me, hiding from him won't matter."
