Daphne's smile vanished.
The news was a knife to the heart. In seven days, he would be gone.
"War?" she whispered, the word feeling foreign and cold on her lips. "Seven days?"
"Why are you just informing me?"
He knew this moment would come. "Daphne, I was going to tell you."
"When?" she asked, her voice a fragile, raw sound. "After my parents left? After you had me believing that our little conflict was the worst thing in the world?"
A tear slipped down her cheek, but her gaze was fierce. "You could have told me."
"It was safer for you not to know."
He lifted a hand, gently wiping the tear from her cheek. "I didn't want you to worry. I didn't want this to ruin the time we have. There will be no goodbyes, no tears. We will simply be apart for a short time."
