Synopsis
In 2019, witchcraft returned — and humanity lost control. A global supernatural war known as Back to Roots shattered science, religion, and borders. At the center of the chaos stood one man: Wyrein Dangruve, the world’s first sorcerer-scientist. He merged spells with machines… then vanished. Now, in 2034, Cameroon reigns as the world’s new superpower. Powered by ancient spirits, AI, and a mysterious force called HOJUN, the country is defended by elite masked warriors: the Functionaries. But one teenager — Jase — doesn’t want to be a hero. He doesn’t care about HOJUN, doesn't trust the government, and wants nothing to do with the past. That changes when a bridge explodes before his eyes… and a monstrous truth awakens inside him. Science meets sorcery.

Chapter 1 - 1. Rope

WITCHCRAFT — the power to control nature.Once feared. Once hunted. Once misunderstood.

For centuries, those who practiced it were seen as threats—hidden clans, rogue sects, shadowy cults.

That was... until one man changed everything.

Wyrein Dangruve. He didn't just master witchcraft—he evolved it.

In the wake of the apocalyptic Back to Roots War of 2019, Wyrein merged arcane rituals with machines, birthing a new energy source: HOJUN. For the first time, humanity could interact with the fabric of nature using both spirit and science.

But power always has a price.

The world's governments quickly seized HOJUN, restricting it from the public. They created pacts, binding contracts that forced wielders into state service.

They were called:

Functionaries.

🇨🇲 2053 – Central Republic of Cameroon

After global collapse, only a few nations rose from the ashes.Cameroon—empowered by its local spiritualists, the Mahrabou—became a world superpower.

Its elite military force was officially named the Cameroon Special Defense Force (CSDF). But the people called them something else:

Junju World.

Thirteen regions.HOJUN-powered domes.Cities pulsing with mystic energy and whispered legends.

A new generation was emerging—not born of ancient rituals, but of desperation and belief.

They weren't Functionaries.

They were something more.

Superheroes.

📍Essos, Yaoundé – Friday, July 13th, 2057

The sun crawled over the ghetto rooftops of Essos, casting its golden light through a broken window into a cluttered bedroom.

The alarm buzzed relentlessly.

Books, superhero comics, and dirty socks lay scattered across the floor. A plate of old piler—plantains and beans—sat untouched in the corner.

A teenage boy groaned and slapped the alarm off.

Jase.Short hair, dark skin, crusty eyes.

He blinked at the clock.

6:09 AM."Shit," he muttered, bolting upright.

His Chemistry exam was today. He darted to his wardrobe, but it was empty. He turned slowly toward the massive pile of dirty clothes in the corner—his personal Mount Kilimanjaro.

He sighed. "No choice."

With all the dignity of a soldier diving into battle, Jase plunged into the mess.

Just then, the door swung open.

"Jase! What are you doing?! You're gonna be late!" his father yelled from the doorway.

When there was no response, he stepped in."JASE!!"

A single hand rose from the heap, holding a wrinkled uniform triumphantly.

His dad shook his head. "After your exams, you're cleaning this room. It's disgusting."

He left.

Jase sniffed the armpit of his shirt.Ugh.

He crawled under the bed, pushing aside empty food wrappers, old socks, some magazines… and finally found his half-used perfume.

He doused the uniform in it, ironed it quickly, and checked the time.

6:30 AM.

A grin crept across his face. He'd broken his personal record for being late.

After a quick shower, he checked his GCE A-Level timetable on the wall.Chemistry Paper 1 and 2 today.

He pointed at it."Ten percent study, ninety percent talent."

He was about to leave when something made him stop. His wrist felt bare.

His bracelet.

He rushed back, found it on the shelf, and paused briefly in front of his mother's photo. Then he slipped it on and ran out the door.

🚌 On the Bus

Five minutes later, the bus pulled in. Jase hopped on and headed straight for the back seat. A pretty girl sat beside him.

He glanced at her, then looked away.

She's beautiful, he thought. Then scolded himself. Don't be a pervert.

As the bus rolled through the morning streets, his mind wandered. Why did I even oversleep?

Then he remembered—he had actually woken up at 5:00 AM. But instead of studying, he got distracted by KayTik videos and superhero lore. Sleep claimed him soon after.

Somewhere mid-ride, his eyes closed again.

A gentle nudge woke him.

"Hey," the girl said softly.

Jase blinked. Was that a sign? A moment? A destiny thing?

Nah—he had an exam to crush.

🏫 School – 7:43 AM

Jase arrived breathless at the school gate. He pushed into the exam hall.

Laughter erupted.

The students noticed his lateness immediately. But one boy at the back of the class didn't laugh. He just stared coldly.

Elan.

The invigilator walked over. "Empty your pockets."

Jase complied.

"No chip? No tech? No tricks?" the man asked.

"I don't need to cheat," Jase said. "This exam is cheap."

The invigilator frowned. "The deepest waters are the calmest."

Jase shrugged. "Old man wisdom again?"

"One more word," the man snapped, "and you'll lose an hour."

Jase zipped his lips and walked to his seat. The papers landed on his desk—Paper 1, Paper 2.

He smiled. They were easy.

As he answered the questions, he could feel the invigilator's eyes burning into his back.

He smiled wider.

🕓 4:51 PM – After School

Jase strolled home with his friends, schoolbags bouncing on their backs.

"Yo Jase, what did you get for question two?" Cedrik asked.

Jase waved him off. "School's over, bro. Don't stress me with ancient history."

"We still have Paper 3 tomorrow!" Cedrik protested.

"Tomorrow, today—same rubbish."

Ahead, Ngono was speed-walking with his notes in hand.

"Hey Ngono!" Jase shouted. "Don't go reading now. We don't feed the chick on the day of sale!"

Ngono turned around. "Screw you, walnut!"

Everyone laughed.

Another classmate asked, "Why did God even make you smart?"

"What kinda question is that?" Jase replied.

"Because he's stupid," Ngono said with a grin.

Jase laughed. "I'm out, guys. Got movies to watch."

He gave them handshakes. "See you later, Ngono. Jason."

He flagged down a taxi and climbed in. As the engine started, his eyelids closed.

He dreamed of passing his exams. He could already picture the pride on his family's faces.

🕯️ Meanwhile…

Far from laughter and dreams, Elan walked alone through an alley.

He stopped at a strange shop.

"I want a rope," he said, placing 25 FCFA on the counter.

The shopkeeper looked at him silently, then nodded.

"Move."

Elan stepped through a back door.

Inside, a dimly lit room reeked of incense and rot. Red cloths hung everywhere. Animal skulls and ritual instruments filled the space.

A man stood shirtless in the center, draped in a crimson robe.

"What do you want, Elan?" he asked, his voice raspy.

Elan's jaw tightened. "The malediction didn't work. Jase came to school."

The man closed his eyes. "I know. But I don't know why. Something blocked it."

"Then amplify it."

"I can. But it'll cost 50fcfa."

"I'll pay when he fails his GCE."

The man grinned darkly."Then tomorrow… is your last chance."
