‎Sleep wouldn't come. I had spent the last hour tossing and turning beneath the soft sheets, trying to convince myself that closing my eyes would still the thoughts running laps in my mind. It didn't.

‎With a frustrated sigh, I threw the covers aside. My throat felt dry and scratchy, and when I reached for the glass on my nightstand, I found the water can empty. Great.

‎The mansion was silent, the kind of silence that hummed in your ears. I slipped on a sweater over my nightshirt and padded out into the hallway barefoot, the marble floor cool under my soles.

‎A faint light glowed from the living room. I almost turned back, assuming Mrs. Roxa had left it on, until I noticed the shadow of someone hunched at the bar counter.
