Chapter 226: Incomplete Appraisal, the Black Sword Dragonslayer
"I'll say this first: the stuff I make is guaranteed to work, but it'll also have... effects you might not like."
As Mad Potter spoke, Kaito Shirogane finally noticed that his pupils were completely red. However, these red pupils didn't give off a sense of evil; instead, they were like gemstones, seemingly shimmering with magical power.
Since almost every Titled-grade Reincarnator he'd met so far had similar traits, Kaito didn't pay it much mind. The man probably commanded some element or possessed a specific bloodline.
Reincarnators who managed to survive for a long time more or less had their share of resources.
While this eccentric Reincarnator was busy showing off, Kaito sized up the items on his stall.
[Laser Goggles - Custom V2]
[Quality: Rare]
[Description: A work by the Alchemist Mad Potter, imbued with a peculiar magical power.]
[Requirements: Spirit > 12, Energy > 10, Magic Affinity]
[Effect 1: When worn, Energy cap is reduced by 30%.]
[Effect 2: When worn, abilities and items with a priority not higher than this item cannot detect the wearer's magic fluctuations.]
[Effect 3: Shattering this item will unleash a powerful laser attack. The attack's damage is linked to the time worn and the user's Energy cap.]
Kaito looked at the item. Even with his way of thinking, he was momentarily unsure if this item was useful or useless.
An item that suppressed one's own energy, yet could only unleash an attack by destroying it? This meant that most of the time, the Reincarnator wearing it would be operating at a net loss.
And right now, this afro-headed man seemed to be wearing a similar-looking monocle over his right eye.
Tsk. Kaito was beginning to doubt Luo Xi's judgment.
As he pondered, he took out the pitch-black Dragonslayer.
"Miss Luo Xi mentioned that you can perform a so-called [Incomplete Appraisal]?"
The so-called [Incomplete Appraisal] was, in reality, something like a bug.
The "unappraised" items produced by the Nexus were actually sealed items. Just as Kaito had learned, everything in the [Nexus] was built upon [Information].
The only difference between powerful items and useless ones was the amount of [Information] they held.
And an [Unappraised] item, in essence, simply meant that the item's [True Information] had not yet been disclosed.
[Appraisal] wasn't so much like identifying an antique; more accurately, it was an ability to [Unseal] and [Disclose Information].
The secret of [Appraisal] in the Nexus was to find an item's true, inherent information from within the countless streams of data from all the worlds.
This is why, after a successful appraisal, an item's quality, usage requirements, and effects would all increase (with a small chance of decreasing).
Once Reincarnators became familiar with the [Appraisal] effect, some of them would master similar abilities in various worlds, also gaining the ability to identify unknown equipment.
From there, Reincarnators discovered a special trick.
By using their own "half-assed" [Appraisal] abilities, they could partially disclose the [Information] of some powerful items.
It was similar to partially breaking the seal on a mighty weapon.
This allowed them to use a portion of a powerful item's effects, even when they didn't meet the full requirements.
This was the exact bug Kaito wanted to exploit. According to Luo Xi, this Mad Potter wasn't "half-assed" at all. He was a true master of magic, powerful enough to intentionally control the appraisal's completion percentage.
"Is this the Dragonslayer?"
The chattering Mad Potter's eyes lit up the moment he saw the ridiculously oversized greatsword.
He examined it from top to bottom, then said, "This isn't his sword, is it? It's mixed with the aura of many different powers. The blade has clearly cut down more than a few other things..."
"Can you appraise it?"
[Reincarnator GA99954770 (Mad Potter) is attempting to use Red-Demon Appraisal on your item · Unappraised Ominous Greatsword. Do you accept?] (Note: After appraisal, quality and usage requirements may increase.)
Mad Potter didn't even quote a price before trying to start. Kaito, however, noticed the name of the appraisal skill in the prompt and thought of the man's red eyes.
"Red-Demon Clan?"
The Red-Demon Clan was a special race from [KonoSuba and its derivative worlds]. Their defining traits were innate, powerful magic, an extremely chuunibyou personality, and the dominant bloodline trait of red eyes.
"Tsk, half-blood. Half-blood Red-Demon. Are you gonna appraise it or not? Don't ruin my buzz!"
Kaito's eyebrow twitched. He rarely met such a maverick in the Nexus.
"Agree."
Red magical power surged. Kaito watched as the pitch-black Dragonslayer rose into the air, and for a split second, several different auras erupted from within it.
There was the black Armament Haki. Kaito figured this was a new power Guts himself had trained after entering the Infinite Dimensional Space. As a system with low aptitude requirements, Armament Haki was indeed a suitable fit for a battle-hardened warrior like Guts.
Then, there was a blood-red luster, which was likely the special [Information] the sword had accumulated from slaughtering countless entities.
And layered above both of those was an even more twisted power, like a black fog, coiling and winding. Even as Mad Potter pushed his magic to its limit, that power barely seeped out from the blade, with most of it remaining sealed within.
Vwom~
The intense magic vanished in an instant. Mad Potter was already covered in sweat.
"Dammit, FXXK! Where the hell did you get this sword? It's actually tied to Causality!"
"Damn, what a pain in the ass!"
[Your item · Unappraised Ominous Greatsword's properties have changed.]
[Black Sword · Dragonslayer]
[Quality: Rare - Extreme]
[Description: The Dragonslayer that traveled the heavens with Guts. It has absorbed many other powers to become a unique weapon.]
[Sharpness: High; Durability: Very High]
[Usage Requirements: Strength > 20, Constitution > 15, Possess Armament Haki, Energy > 10]
[Effect 1: When holding this sword, Armament Haki will be drained. Swings will also inflict Haki damage.]
[Effect 2: When hit by this weapon, damage-immunity-type abilities are nullified.]
[Effect 3: Dismemberment. Attacks with this weapon have a high probability of causing dismemberment.]
[Effect 4: Unknown]
[Effect 5: Unknown]
After the appraisal, the Dragonslayer began to swirl with pitch-black Armament Haki. The moment Kaito gripped it, he could feel his own Armament Haki being absorbed.
"Mercenary Tao, I'd advise you to sell this thing. That Causality stuff... tsk, you don't want to mess with it."
Mad Potter wiped the sweat from his brow, offering a word of warning. Only then did he remember he hadn't quoted a price. He coughed and added, "For this appraisal, I'll just charge you 1 D-Grade Singularity. I'll waive the Dimensional Points."
His price was similar to the Nexus's official appraisers, but this was reasonable. Some Reincarnators specifically sought him out for Incomplete Appraisals; in a way, his ability was even rarer than the standard.
THUD!
Mad Potter's eyes twitched. He saw Mercenary Tao place his left hand on the stall. He didn't understand. Was this a threat?
Then, the Nexus prompt appeared. Mad Potter swallowed, finding it hard to believe what he was seeing.
[XX53562211 (Mercenary Tao) is showing you the Bio-Armor · The King's Left Arm.]
"Mr. Mad Potter, I think we need to sign a contract."
Potter nodded frantically. That was a special requirement that only appeared for items of extremely high value.
"Sign it! Sign it fast! I'm dying to see this treasure... heh..."
