Chapter 150: Shun Goku Satsu!
Lin sat up from the straw mat. He had spent a large sum of his own money to have the locals from the village carry both him and Kaito to the nearby estate.
He gently rubbed his temples. He felt as if he had forgotten something important, but he couldn't for the life of him remember what. He tried to search his memories, but something felt wrong. For example, he clearly remembered working for a terrifying boss when he first came here, but he couldn't recall the man's name or face. He also knew there was an estate nearby, ruled by a big boss who controlled all the villages, gangs, and compounds for a hundred miles around, but he couldn't remember who that was either.
He was even beginning to forget why he knew about the estate in the first place.
Lin stammered as he tried to explain this to Kaito, terrified that the man would deem him useless and kill him. But to his surprise, the true tyrant simply smiled and nodded, not pressing the issue.
Kaito knew what was happening. The Nexus's cognitive interference had begun to take effect. When a Reincarnator died, all [Information] related to them was confiscated by the Nexus, as if it were a resource to be redeployed or consumed. The result was that all normal people would gradually forget the person's existence. The closer their relationship, the faster the memories would blur, until they were completely gone. Eventually, even the events related to that person would be forgotten, and no trace of them would remain in the mind.
And so, Kaito had consciously taken advantage of this, having Lin, who still remembered the estate's location, guide him to the infamous "No-Return Manor." It was a place the locals feared, a place where many who had crossed its owner had been taken, never to be seen again.
His own compound, where he hadn't even stayed for a few weeks, had been destroyed in the battle with Grinder. He was planning to take over this new estate as a temporary base, from which he could slowly begin to build his paradise.
At dawn, they saw the manor, nestled in the mountain forest. It wasn't particularly luxurious. A collection of wooden buildings, it looked more like a well-off village. It had a wall, and a four-meter-wide stone road leading to the entrance, with several guard posts along the way, all manned by armed men.
Lin watched with his own eyes as the madman Kaito walked up to "negotiate," and then one-by-one, brutally slaughtered all of the armed guards. The bullets, it seemed, all had minds of their own, and none of them could hit him.
A short time later, Lin was inside. He began to direct the locals to gather the corpses and ordered the numb, silent servants to continue cleaning the estate, to carry the stinking bones and remains far away and bury them. As he did this, he felt that the searing pain in his leg had lessened. He had found a sense of security. This manor... perhaps this would be his safe haven for the foreseeable future.
As he thought this, he looked back and saw the madman, Kaito, standing on the second floor of the main villa, lying on a lounge chair, seemingly already asleep. In the past, he might have had other ideas. But now, just looking at him brought back a flood of terrifying images. This man was a wild beast in human skin, a monster, a demon. To make an enemy of such a thing... there was no way to live.
Kaito had noticed that in the backyard of the estate, there was a large, stinking pond, with pieces of skeletons floating in it. He guessed that Grinder's abilities might have included some kind of summoning or contract beast. But such a thing was difficult to use in the real world. Perhaps he hadn't had it with him that night. And now, with Grinder dead, the creature had either vanished or escaped.
Tsk. I hope it doesn't cause too much trouble for the locals.
Kaito lay on the rocking chair, swaying gently. If he wanted to hunt Reincarnators in Northern Myanmar, the first thing he needed was a sound intelligence network. This place was a chaotic mix of factions: historical noble families, warlords, gangs, drug lords, and corrupt government bureaucrats. Information was not transparent.
"Lin! Get me a computer!" he suddenly shouted. The man below immediately scrambled to find one.
In the information age, Kaito had decided to start with the internet. Coincidentally, he also needed a way to translate the notebook he had gotten from Bad Kid's private space. The number of Reincarnators in Korea was likely not small. If Bad Kid had a good target, Kaito wouldn't mind taking over the hunt.
[Black Butler] sent a thought, requesting access to a private space.
[You are requesting access to the private space of the team: Fatal Fury…]
[Requesting… Approved.]
With a flash of light, Black Butler appeared in a small city block. The space was over two acres in size. In the distance was darkness, but the immediate area was several buildings, lit with flashing neon lights. The team known as [Fatal Fury] was clearly not small, and their team space was very distinctive. They even had separate buildings for their resource warehouse, meeting hall, and training room. This was quite rare, even among second-tier teams.
Black Butler's current permission only allowed him to access the meeting hall. He looked at the three-story-high, gray building in front of him. It gave off a strange, unsettling aura. The scale of it... it wasn't built for normal-sized Reincarnators. He touched the door and was instantly teleported inside.
The interior was vast and empty, the floor covered with a fine red carpet. Several other info-brokers were already present.
A powerfully built man with short pink hair sat at the head of the room. His face was handsome, but his anger was impossible to hide. "One of our team members has been killed in the real world."
At his words, the others in the room opened their eyes. A powerful, oppressive aura instantly filled the space. Black Butler knew that these people were all elite Reincarnators who had already broken the first limit. [Fatal Fury] was a team even more powerful than [The Fifth Element] had been at their peak. They were one of the top-tier elite teams of the second stage, on par with [9527] and the [Far East Magic Society]. Several large Collectives were trying to recruit them.
The team's leader was the pink-haired man, codenamed [Rose Tiger]. He was a powerful martial artist, on the same level as [Kai] from [The Fifth Element]. The two had fought many times, with the results being an even split.
"I need a name. A codename," Rose Tiger said, his voice low and dangerous. "You can name your price."
The info-brokers exchanged glances. They knew this was not going to be a simple transaction. This was the risk of their profession. Dealing with information, sooner or later, someone was going to lose their mind and come after them.
"[Rose Tiger], I am sorry for your loss," [Cyber], a broker in a cloak, said first. "But no one has been asking me about any of your team members recently."
Rose Tiger's expression grew even darker. He had no patience for this. He stood up, his aura becoming unstable. "I don't care if you know or not," he said. "I need a name!"
In the increasingly dangerous mission worlds, a qualified, defense-specialized Reincarnator was an extremely precious asset. [Grinder] was someone the team had spent a great deal of resources to cultivate. And he had been a loyal member, saving the team many times, always standing in front of the most dangerous enemies. Whether for personal feelings or for the team's benefit, Rose Tiger could not forgive the one who had killed him.
But their team was not "harmonious" like [The Fifth Element]. Their single-minded pursuit of power meant that there was no love lost between the members; in fact, there was a great deal of mutual suspicion. They almost never revealed any of their real-world information to each other. Their relationship was closer to "colleagues" than to "family."
So now, Rose Tiger wanted revenge, but he had no target. He didn't even know if this was the work of another team, a personal grudge, or if it was because he had recently been getting close to the [Titled] Reincarnator, [Crimson Sorcerer - Luo Xi], and had incurred the wrath of another [Titled] player.
He clutched his head, the thoughts giving him a splitting headache.
"Haha. Tiger, what's the use in pressuring them?" a woman's voice drawled. She was lounging by a window on the right side of the room. "If you ask me, you should just find a diviner, find Grinder's real-world location, and start from there. That is… if you really want to avenge him." She looked around at the other team members. Besides the idiot Rose Tiger, she knew that very few of them actually wanted revenge for Grinder. She was well aware that while Rose Tiger had been courted by the Crimson Sorcerer, other [Titled] Reincarnators had also been in contact with the other core members of the team. Even she herself had received several promises. This so-called [Fatal Fury] team was probably about to become a "legend" in a different sense...
Her eyes, full of amusement, suddenly landed on Black Butler. "Black Butler," she said, her tone changing. "I hear that the great [Final Sun] has sent someone to find you. Is it true one of his followers was killed?"
At these words, even Rose Tiger stopped his fuming and looked over.
Black Butler pushed up his monocle. This piece of information wasn't particularly valuable on its own. But it was a good hook to draw people in and make them pay for the deeper details.
"That is correct. His eminence sent a follower to contact me. He confirmed that the first-tier Reincarnator [Kalpa] was his follower, and has been killed."
Rose Tiger sneered. "Kalpa? A small-fry like that was chosen as a follower? What kind of dumb luck is that?"
The woman on the windowsill smiled, not taking Black Butler's bait. She changed the subject. "That [Mercenary Tao] is your client, isn't he? I'm interested in those vials of [Compound V] he has. I'd like you to negotiate for me. By the way, do you know what kind of items he prefers?"
Her true intentions were revealed. Rose Tiger's expression changed. [Compound V], for others, was just a lottery ticket. You injected it and saw if you got a good power. If not, you had to pay a huge price to remove it. But this woman was different. For her, [Compound V] was a convenient genetic weapon. He keenly sensed that she had other plans.
[Black Butler] took in all their expressions. He thought for a moment about Kaito's needs. "Mercenary Tao," he said, "is likely looking for two types of things. One, a fast and convenient vehicle. And the other…"
He looked directly at Rose Tiger. "A powerful, high-frequency martial arts ability."
Many people knew that an info-broker had recently been trying to arrange a trade for Rose Tiger. The item for sale was an ability scroll called [Shun Goku Satsu].
