Chapter 97: Gojo Satoru, the King of Cursed Spirits
[You have opened a Crimson Drop Card.]
[Opening Drop…]
[Calculating target's Slaughter Points. Target's Slaughter Points: 24. Reward tier increased.]
[Calculating your Karma Points…]
[Karma Points detected for ID# Ex051. You will receive 1 additional reward choice.]
[Calculation complete. You may select 2 of the following reward categories.]
[A: 70% of target's Dimensional Points]
[B: 4 items from target's inventory]
[C: Gain 10% of target's main attribute, added to your own]
[D: Randomly draw 1 proficiency (capped at Lv5)]
[E: Randomly gain 1 ability (capped at Lv3)]
[F: 5% chance to extract a Lineage item (Lineage optimization not included)]
Kaito crushed the werewolf's Crimson Drop Card. He was somewhat surprised; the man's Slaughter Points weren't as high as he had imagined. But after a moment's thought, it made sense. This werewolf wasn't a specialist "newbie hunter" like Evans. He likely only fought other teams in Team Arena worlds. And if the strength gap between two teams wasn't massive, they would usually try to negotiate and avoid a head-on conflict, allowing both to complete the mission with a decent rating. No matter how good the reward, you had to be alive to claim it.
The Reincarnator ecosystem was very similar to a primitive jungle. Even if you were a predator, you wouldn't risk serious injury or death to hunt prey that could fight back. Kaito guessed that [The Fifth Element] had attacked his group simply because their recon (Bat) had seen them negotiating and judged them to be a weak, disorganized team of lone wolves. Their subsequent flight had only confirmed this, triggering the hunt.
Tsk. Kaito felt his understanding of Reincarnators had deepened. He was like a young lion on the savannah, slowly learning how to hunt.
Looking at the options, he saw a new one: a chance to extract a lineage. He wasn't sure if this had appeared because the target had a lineage, or because his own Karma Points had increased.
Of the choices, Kaito first locked in [C]. For him, in a situation where he had no idea what special items or abilities his opponent had, a guaranteed attribute point was never a bad choice. This was especially true since the werewolf's attributes had clearly broken the 20-point limit.
As for the second choice, he had never seen the werewolf use any items. He guessed his inventory was either empty or full of junk. The DP was useless.
"I choose C and F." Kaito decided to take the 5% gamble.
[You have selected C. Extracting…]
[Your Strength attribute +2. Current: 17 (15+2)]
[You have selected F. Extracting…]
[Extracting Lineage Item... Success!]
[You have obtained the Lineage Item: Werewolf (Rare)]
Kaito raised an eyebrow. He hadn't expected the 5% chance to actually work. Is this some kind of "beginner's luck" protection? he mused. At the same time, he felt his muscles and bones being strengthened again. He clenched his fists. The increase in his strength was significant. He felt that if he used the proper stance, he could now throw a punch with the force of two tons. This also confirmed that the werewolf's Strength stat had indeed been over 20. When he recalled their brief clash of fists, where he had been sent flying, he realized that the growth in power after breaking a limit was even more terrifying than he'd thought.
Kaito crushed the second Crimson Drop Card.

[A: 60% of target's Dimensional Points]
[B: 4 items from target's inventory]

[D: Randomly draw 1 proficiency (capped at Lv4)]

"I choose C and B."
His fight with the woman had been short. The only things that had left an impression were her calmness and that special portal item.
[You have selected C. Extracting... Extraction abnormal. Target has balanced attributes. Extracting at random.]
[Your Spirit attribute +1. Current: 15 (14+1)]
Kaito clicked his tongue. So that woman was a balanced-build Reincarnator, just like him.
[You have selected B. Extracting…]
[You have obtained item: Quality Tobacco (White)]
[You have obtained item: 7.62mm Bullets x60 (White)]
[You have obtained item: Handmade Doll]
[You have obtained item: Handmade Doll]
Kaito looked at the so-called handmade dolls. They were just crude things made of scrap cloth and straw.
"This woman... ha. Interesting."
He knew he had been tricked, but at the same time, his estimation of her rose. Unlike the werewolf, who was just a brute with a bloodline, she had been a qualified Reincarnator. She had actually anticipated her own death and, to reduce the chance of her killer looting her rare items, had padded her inventory with a massive amount of useless junk.
Kaito tossed the dolls aside and walked into the black barrier. He followed the path that Geto's team had cleared, guided by the sound of explosions in the distance. He was moving much faster than the cautious Jujutsu Sorcerers. They were afraid of unknown curses, afraid of the same enemy that had killed Gojo Satoru.
But Kaito was certain of his own theory. There was no "unknown" curse. The true enemy who had caused Gojo to fall was, at this very moment, trapped. This barrier was, ironically, the safest place to be.
A few moments later, Kaito arrived at a ritual site. He daubed his own blood onto one of the skeletal markers, just as the terrifying Hadoken blast erupted in the distance. He looked up and first saw the [White Crow Sword Technique] shatter against Gojo's passive [Limitless]. Then, he saw the cloaked woman, [White Mask], patting Gojo's corpse and taunting him, trying to awaken him.
A giant fox, hundreds of meters tall, suddenly appeared and swallowed both the newly-opened eyes of Gojo Satoru and the just-turned head of [White Mask] in one bite. A terrifying spiritual power swept the entire field.
Geto Suguru, Shoko Ieiri, and Kai's team all froze. The aura from this giant fox was nothing like a Cursed Spirit, nor was it like the Shaman King [Guardian Spirit] that [White Mask] had summoned. The fox's body was covered in massive eyes, and the pupils within them were swirling, spiral patterns. It was a sight of grotesque beauty.
Kaito saw that his main quest had not yet failed. The [King of Cursed Spirits] had not fully revived.
[You have attacked Reincarnator DM66616387. Based on the gap in Spirit, you have obtained the following information.]
[Your attack had no effect on Reincarnator DM66616387.]
The combat log confirmed Kaito's guess. His opponent was in a special, invulnerable state. His attack hadn't been "blocked"; it simply "had no effect." This, combined with the Gojo-Curse's [Limitless], led Kaito to believe... she was still in the middle of the ritual.
"Kai," a voice echoed from within the fox's body, "you're even more useless than I thought. You couldn't even clear out these stragglers?"
The voice made the grotesque fox writhe as if in a rage, and a terrifying spiritual power pulsed from it.
BZZZZT!
A violent red light erupted from within the fox, and the black barrier around them began to crack. The power of the [Strike of Inari] was far greater than Kaito had ever imagined.
Geto Suguru was now fully prepared. An intense Cursed Energy began to rise. He did not expand his Domain. Instead, countless Cursed Spirits poured from him, fanning out in all directions to cover the various ritual nodes he had calculated.
"Next," Geto announced calmly, "I will focus the Cursed Energy of over two thousand Cursed Spirits into a single, full-power strike."
This, too, was a form of Jujutsu: a [Binding Vow]. By revealing his attack to his enemy, he was placing a disadvantage on himself, which in turn amplified the power of his technique.
An immense spiral of Cursed Energy began to expand.
THUD!
The violent heartbeat returned, this time incomparably loud.
The giant fox spirit suddenly began to bleed a yellow, ichor-like substance from its seven orifices, and then it exploded.
A sharp pain shot through Kaito's left hand. The curse mark had gone dim.
[Your Curse Mark has been eroded by the Underworld. It is now in an unusable state.]
"Hahahaha… HAHAHAHA!"
A wild laugh echoed. First, a blast of blue and white Cursed Energy shot skyward. Gojo Satoru's body was straight, his broken limbs hanging limply, the chains that had bound him now completely shattered. Behind him, an invisible door was being slowly pushed open. As [White Mask] laughed, she, too, was freed.
She summoned her blue [Fox-Fire] to her feet. "In the end, Gojo Satoru, you still couldn't stop the Gate of the Underworld from opening."
A massive, murky yellow river began to flow from the gate behind Gojo, carrying with it the stench of countless wraiths. The temperature plummeted.
[White Mask], now free, immediately pointed at Kai and Old Ghost. The [Fox-Fire] spirit shot toward them, and the two men vanished in a burst of blue flame.
Geto and Kaito remained motionless, letting the cold river of the dead wash over their ankles.
"Shoko," Geto said, his voice quiet. "Could you please take everyone and leave this place?" He clasThis hands together, and a terrifying amount of Cursed Energy began to swirl around him. The Special Grade Cursed Spirit [Tamamo-no-Mae] had already been absorbed into the vortex. With every passing second, more curses were being consumed, and his Cursed Energy was rising to an unbelievable level.
Shoko Ieiri looked up at the figure in the sky, at the man who had opened his eyes. They were no longer the color of the blue sky, but a flat, blood-red. She finally gave up.
"What's the difference between going and staying now?" She pulled a pack of cigarettes from her pocket, trying to light one.
BAM!
A massive force struck her. Kaito had hit her, sending her flying nearly a hundred meters. If not for her constant use of Reverse Cursed Technique, the blow would have killed her.
He then spoke. "So Gojo Satoru died, and the world just ends?"
"That woman is spouting a little nonsense, and you all just believe you've already lost?!"
A manic, absurd smile was on Kaito's face. He locked eyes with Geto. "You don't believe it either, do you, Geto?"
Geto's expression became calm. "Of course not. After all, in this world right now… I am the savior."
With a mocking grin, Geto spread his arms.
"Cursed Spirit Manipulation! Maximum: Uzumaki!"
A terrifying wave of power blasted the darkness apart, once again revealing the ruins of Tokyo.
[White Mask], high in the air, glanced back and sneered. He's pretending to use a Binding Vow to power up his attack, but he's lying. His real goal is to disrupt the ritual.
That's not going to happen.
Now that the ritual has begun, without the blood of the Tsuchimikado clan, it cannot be stopped. That's why I brought them all inside the barrier. She had already eliminated the possibility of the ritual being stopped.
BOOM!
Geto's Cursed Energy fully erupted. The recoil was so strong it nearly blew him away, but he held his ground, aiming the "Cursed Energy Cannon" in a devastating sweep. Countless Cursed Spirits and wraiths were instantly vaporized.
[White Mask] smiled coldly. A wisp of fox-fire ignited at the feet of Gojo's corpse. The next second…
"MOOOOO!"
A monstrous, inhuman roar came from Gojo's mouth. An invisible wave of power pulsed outwards. Any wraith that touched it was instantly annihilated.
[Main Quest Stage 2: Prevent the revival of the King of Cursed Spirits. FAILED.]
[Main Quest Stage 3: Terminate the King of Cursed Spirits, Gojo Satoru. FORCED ACTIVATION.]
Crimson Cursed Energy exploded from Gojo's body. His broken limbs instantly healed. At the same time, his hands... his hands began to open, and dozens of tiny, blinking eyes were revealed on his palms, each one a perfect, sky-blue [Six Eyes].
But in a moment, the blue was drowned out by crimson. The [King of Cursed Spirits] had fully awakened.
[White Mask] cackled madly in the sky as her fox-fire engulfed Old Ghost. Kai, in despair, roared and unleashed one final Hadoken.
Kaito Shirogane took it all in, a strange, knowing smile on his face. He began to form a hand seal, drawing a pattern on his other hand with his own blood.
"Taizan Fukun Ritual, activate!"
