Chapter 94: A Reincarnator's Primitive Revenge
BOOM!
The ruins of the skyscraper exploded as a werewolf, over three meters tall, climbed out and threw its head back in a triumphant roar.
"Uuugh!"
[Bat], circling high above, saw this and felt a wave of relief. Jugo won…
But in the next instant…
CRASH!
Another section of the rubble burst apart. The all-too-familiar pink robe appeared once more.
Kaito Shirogane looked at the large piece of flesh that had been torn from his right leg, then glanced at the howling werewolf. Golden ripples of Hamon flowed over the wound, and the bleeding stopped instantly. A numbing sensation followed as the injury began to rapidly heal.
Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump!
A violent heartbeat echoed from Kaito's chest. His body began to swell again, muscles bulging, his streamlined form expanding into the exaggerated, Hulk-like proportions of his combat state. He lifted his left foot high, almost level with his eyebrow, and then smashed it down.
BOOM!
The fractured concrete floor exploded as if a high-explosive grenade had detonated.
The werewolf instantly spun around, only to be hit with a hurricane-force blast of air. Its eyes, now milky-white with rage, saw Kaito charge. It slashed its claws through the air.
But Kaito didn't dodge. He threw a punch, his aura erupting with the force of a raging fire.
BAM!
Before the werewolf's claws could even tear the air, Kaito's fist had already slammed into its palm. Immense forces collided. A sonic boom cracked the air, and a ring of incandescent white vapor expanded from the point of impact. They were locked in a stalemate for a fraction of a second, before the werewolf roared, put its weight forward, and brutally followed through on its attack.
BANG!
Kaito was sent flying. Both of his arms, and the werewolf's, were now spraying blood from ruptured capillaries. But the werewolf was a creature of pure wildness. Pain like this only made it more bloodthirsty. With his attack's momentum spent, [Jugo] dropped to all fours and, with all four limbs digging into the rubble, charged like a true, giant wolf.
This was the first time Kaito had ever been overpowered in a direct contest of strength.
He flew through the air like a cannonball, but he violently twisted his waist, curling into a ball and tumbling rapidly to dissipate the colossal force. By the time he landed, his arms had already been healed by his Lv7 Hamon.
"Interesting," he breathed.
Seeing the werewolf charging at him on all fours, Kaito, having learned nothing, charged forward to meet him again.
The werewolf leaped through the air to pounce. Kaito activated the [Transparent World]. He took a single step, shifting his weight, and coiled his right palm.
[Rakshasa's Palm]!
He thrust his hand forward. The werewolf, in its berserk state, didn't dodge. Crimson light exploded from its claws.
[Soul-Scattering Iron Claw]!
The crimson light shot out like blades. But Kaito, whose Rakshasa's Palm had not yet fully extended, was already moving. In combat, his perfect body control and his Transparent World gave him the effect of sen-no-sen—he could see the truth and falsehood of an opponent's attack before it was even launched. The moment the werewolf had committed to its attack, Kaito's center of gravity was already flowing. His heel pushed off the ground, and his body reversed direction, leaping backward with the impossible lightness of a crane, ascending four or five meters into the air.
SLICE!
The rubble pile he had been standing on was pulverized. This werewolf's claw attack wasn't just a physical strike; it was a ranged slash, and its destructive power was terrifying.
The werewolf's attack missed. It instantly spun around, its movements so feral it almost lost its balance, and it pushed off the ground to lunge at Kaito again. Kaito could see this was no martial artist. It was pure, raw instinct. This creature had completely lost its mind.
Kaito landed. The ground shook again. He was now using his [Niko Style - Fire Kata - Raging Fire] footwork even to land, turning the downward momentum into explosive forward power. The trade-off was that it tore his own muscles apart. But with his Hamon's healing factor, a certain degree of self-destruction was now a calculated part of his combat strategy.
The werewolf's claw missed again. Kaito, however, had used the explosive speed to appear behind it.
[Sage Art - Rakshasa's Palm]!
BAM!
[Jugo] felt a blinding pain in his lower spine as even his iron-hard muscles were instantly twisted by the blow. He staggered, lost his balance, and crashed to the ground.
Kaito finally exhaled the breath he'd been holding, a plume of white steam that diffused into the air. His skin was flushed red, and a faint mist was rising from his entire body. He no longer looked human.
The werewolf's muscles swelled, his eyes white with rage. He was breathing in ragged gasps, not even paying attention to the system notifications. His mind was filled with only one thing: Anger. That anger was now clouding his combat decisions, which was precisely why Kaito sneered.
"You… are weak."
Kaito looked at this werewolf—this creature whose Strength surpassed his own limit break, who had sent him flying with a single blow—and still judged him to be weak. In a way, he was even weaker than Evans the Clown, who he had killed back in Japan. This creature had completely lost the self-awareness of a Reincarnator.
"You enjoy the slaughter, but when it's your turn to be slaughtered, you fall to pieces. So weak."
Kaito truly didn't understand why these supposed veterans, who should have been accustomed to killing, would lose their minds over the death of a comrade. He didn't understand the so-called "bonds" or "emotions" they felt. He had never felt them himself. In his eyes, the werewolf's rage was not a strength, but a pathetic, fatal flaw.
The werewolf couldn't understand Kaito's words. He just brutally tore at the mangled, twisted flesh on his own back with his claws, then turned, dripping blood.
"I… will kill you. No… I will EAT you… AGH!"
The werewolf suddenly howled in pain. Kaito frowned. The werewolf violently kicked its leg, and a figure was yanked out of the rubble like a turnip, impaled on its claws.
At the same time, the werewolf's entire right leg corroded down to the bone.
Reed was covered in filth and blood. One of his ears had been torn off, and half the skin on his face was gone. His Cursed Energy, lacking any formal Innate Technique, was not strong enough to protect him from being crushed in the building's collapse. But, fueled by his medication and an astonishing well of hatred, he had waited for his chance.
He was kicked into the air. The werewolf instantly swiped at him with its other claw, the crimson light flashing.
SLICE!
Reed's legs were severed at the hip. His arms, which he had crossed in front of him and cloaked in Cursed Energy, were not cut. He crashed to the ground, letting out a sound that was half a scream of agony, half a roar of triumph. "Hah… ah…"
He gasped, blood pouring from his mouth. The werewolf, meanwhile, was still howling in pain. It had been forced to sever its own right leg at the knee to stop the spread of the corrosive curse. Now, completely missing a leg, the massive werewolf was forced onto its hands, unable to attack freely.
"Quick… kill him!" Reed shrieked, his mind completely gone. He didn't care that he was bleeding out from his severed arteries.
Seeing Kaito remain motionless, Reed began to drag himself across the ground with his hands, crawling toward the injured werewolf. He wasn't afraid of death. On the contrary, death was a release. But he wanted revenge. He wanted to see his enemies suffer. The werewolf's howl was the most beautiful sound he had ever heard.
Kaito's heart, which had been pounding with excitement, suddenly began to slow. He felt... bored.
This wasn't combat. This wasn't even a slaughter. It was just… primitive hatred. A self-destructive attack that violated every biological instinct for survival.
And all for what?… Teammates?
Kaito thought back to Reed's two comrades. He realized he didn't even know their names or faces. He had only registered them by their combat roles: one sniper, one caster. He had only cared about their abilities as Reincarnators. But Reed and his ilk... they clearly expected something more from their teammates. Perhaps spiritual comfort. Perhaps just someone to sleep with.
SPLAT!
The werewolf impaled Reed's back with its one good claw. At the same time, Reed sank his hands into the werewolf's arms, his black Cursed Energy eating into its flesh. But the werewolf, now wary, simply flung him away like a broken doll.
Reed's mutilated torso rolled across the ground, leaving a thick trail of blood. His body began to twitch—the last, desperate attempt of his organs to fight for life. But his life force was already fading.
A figure stepped up beside him. Reed turned his head. In his fading vision, he saw that unbearably ugly face. A sudden, powerful will flared within him.
"Kill him… please…"

Kaito expressionlessly watched the last spark of life fade from Reed's eyes. His corpse slowly dissolved into a crimson glow, which then condensed into a Crimson Drop Card... which appeared in front of the werewolf. Reed hadn't even had time to give Kaito all of his possessions.
"What a failed transaction, Reed."
The werewolf was now crawling on the ground. Its severed leg was trying to grow back, but even with its terrifying vitality, regenerating an entire limb would take time. Normally, Basha would have used a portal to get him out, and with [Bat]'s aerial cover, he would have retreated to the team, protected by Kai and Old Ghost, and he would have been fine.
But this time… Basha was dead.
[Jugo] roared. High above, [Bat], holding a javelin, began to circle lower. His face was pale, and he was so nervous he could barely breathe.
Kaito let out a self-deprecating laugh. "I really don't get you people. We're all Reincarnators. What's the point of all this sentimental drama?"
"All of you, so full of passion and loyalty… it almost makes me look like the anomaly here."
A flash of light in Kaito's hands. Two high-explosive grenades appeared. He pulled the pins and tossed them at the werewolf. Jugo instantly leaped up on his one good leg. But Kaito's hands had already summoned the [Terminator's Grip].
He aimed at the airborne target and pulled the trigger.
BOOM!
BOOM!
At this close range, the shotgun was devastating. Both blasts hit, and the werewolf's body was riddled with bloody holes, its mid-air movement faltering. Kaito continued to rack the slide, a perfect shooter. With a shotgun, at this range, everyone was an expert.
BOOM! BOOM!
[Jugo] felt pain everywhere. The loss of his leg had slowed him down far more than he'd expected.
SWISH!
A javelin shot down from the sky. Kaito took one step, and the spear embedded itself in the ground in front of him. His shotgun vanished. He grabbed the javelin, took a running step, leaped into the air, and hurled it back at the werewolf.
Thwack!
Jugo twisted, and the javelin pierced deep into the concrete wall, a meter into the ground. The feeling of death grazing past him sent a sudden, unfamiliar terror through Jugo's heart. He was suddenly... afraid.
Kaito heard the werewolf's frantic heartbeat change frequency, his breathing becoming chaotic. His expression became even more bored. How can a Reincarnator who takes such pleasure in killing be so afraid of his own death?
Kaito suddenly stomped his foot on the ground.
BOOM!
The violent tremor instantly put Jugo on high alert. His head snapped around, his pupils contracting, desperately trying to find his opponent. But there was nothing. Kaina was gone?
No. Jugo looked back. His opponent hadn't moved at all. He had literally just... stomped his foot.
In that moment, [Jugo] realized his problem. He was afraid. He was terrified of this man.
Kaito shook his head, regretting that he had ever, for even one second, considered this werewolf to be "strong." His performance in battle was even worse than the woman's.
BOOM!
Another earth-shattering stomp. This time, Jugo instinctively looked back at where Kaito had been, and seeing nothing, his heart sank.
CRACKLE!
Like dry thunder tearing the night, the air itself seemed to smell of ozone. The pink figure was charging straight at him from the front.
Jugo raised his claws, a crimson light glowing. Blood dripped from them as he prepared to unleash his attack.
[Soul-Scattering Blood Claw]!
SPLAT!
Before his raised claws could even begin to descend, the man was already in front of him. A golden spear had pierced straight through his chest.
[Sage Art - Great Devil Lance]!
The moment Kaito had seen the hesitation and fear in his opponent's eyes, he had charged, launching a decisive, frontal attack that tore through the werewolf's chest. His hand, emerging from Jugo's back, was holding a massive, dripping heart. It pulsed a few more times in the open air before the lack of blood stilled it.
[Jugo]'s chest seized in pain. He looked down. His opponent's arm was buried completely through his torso.
The werewolf's form began to shrink, reverting to his human self. [Jugo]'s true form was a small, thin man, barely 170cm tall. Kaito held him up as his mouth and nose began to gush blood. He could no longer speak. But he tried, letting out a series of gurgles.
He was lucid enough to realize he was dying. His madness was gone. He suddenly looked up, past Kaito, at [Bat], who was still circling above. He roared, "Bat! Run!"
Thwack!
Kaito casually flung his body to the ground. It was just a corpse.
