Chapter 84: Hadoken!
The recoil from the [Terminator's Grip] shotgun blast jolted the car, but the driver was an expert. He didn't lose control. Instead, he slammed his foot on the gas, aiming straight for the commercial district.
This "Team Arena" type of mission world was, by its very nature, the most ruthless kind of free-for-all. All Reincarnators, in addition to dealing with the plot, had to be constantly on guard against attacks from other players. But conversely, powerful, established teams saw these worlds as a golden opportunity. The rewards from a single Crimson Drop Card could surpass even those of an S-rank mission completion.
Kaito put the shotgun away, his gaze shifting from the figure that had been sent spinning. The man wasn't flying under his own power but was using something like a wingsuit, riding the wind currents. When Kaito had fired, the man had reacted instantly, spreading his arms. The massive air resistance had allowed him to pull up and change direction, dodging the blast, but it had also cost him his speed, and he could no longer stay on their tail.
Kaito's lips curled into a grin. It was the first time he'd seen a Reincarnator use mobility in that way. He had to admit, Reincarnators were a group of creatures that never ceased to surprise him.
Reed, his heart still pounding from the close call, glanced at the man calling himself "Mercenary Tao." His perceptive abilities were astonishing; he had spotted the enemy even faster than their team's caster, Kava.
With no time to talk, Reed gripped his seat, nervously scanning the area while actively sharing intelligence.
"The Fifth Element is a fairly well-known team in the East Sector. Their members are fixed, and it's rumored they all live together in the real world, so their level of trust and coordination is extremely high."
"Their team leader is a Reincarnator codenamed [Kai], who is believed to be at the [Strong]-tier of power."
"The Fifth Element has risen very quickly in the last six months. They've taken losses, but they replenish their ranks just as fast, absorbing a lot of skilled lone wolves. They are a tough crew."
Kaito didn't react, merely watched as the car, going over eighty miles per hour, slammed directly into the landscaping of the commercial district. Just before impact, he tapped his toes on the door and leaped. Like a crane spreading its wings, he landed on the branch of a small tree, the branch bending but not breaking as he dissipated his forward momentum. The other three hit the ground in a roll, bleeding off their inertia.
"Go! To the underground garage! We'll switch cars and keep moving!" Reed barked a short command.
Kaito, however, did not follow. The three of them glanced back at him, standing weightlessly on the swaying branch, but said nothing more and disappeared into the dark garage.
Kaito watched them go. Then, using the moonlight, he looked up. The figure in the wingsuit was still circling above. Clearly, he was waiting for someone. This posture... it was as if he was certain they were trapped. His team either had an overwhelming numerical advantage, or they were absolutely confident in their own strength. More importantly, they weren't worried about their prey escaping.
Kaito sensed the area. There was no killing intent, no hostility aimed at him. The only reason he'd sensed the scout before the caster, Kava, was, of course, because of his [Killing Intent Sense]. Now, whether because the enemy was too far away or was simply not focused on him, he felt nothing. He dropped from the tree and stepped onto the main road.
The Reincarnator circling on the skyscraper above was wearing special, light-amplifying goggles.
"Report. The five-man group has split into three teams. The two-man team is on jet-boards, heading north on the main road. Old Ghost, you're up."
"Heh. Already in my sights."
"The three-man team entered the underground. They're probably trying to escape through the garage. Ninth Bro, you have them?"
"Good as dead."
The Reincarnator, codenamed [Bat], then looked for the lone wolf who had fired the shotgun. The next second…
"The hell?"
[Bat] looked down. The street where the man had been was empty. He immediately scanned the area. No trace. He wasn't in any of the nearby shops. He looked back at the main road, and then he saw him—a figure sprinting across the rooftops of the shopping arcade, his steps incredibly fast and steady. He clearly had a high-level footwork proficiency.
"What is it, Bat? We have a problem?"
Hearing his leader's voice, [Bat] quickly reported. "That lone wolf... he's probably an Agility-specialist. He's fast. He's parkouring across the rooftops, heading west. It's fine. I'm going after him."
"Take this seriously, Bat. This mission isn't a joke. The divergence in this world is severe. We have to clear out these stragglers as fast as possible, then leave Tokyo. If I'm right, in three days, Tokyo is going to be nuked. And after that…"
The joking tone was gone from the comms channel. This mission, even for [The Fifth Element], was not going to be easy. They had to regroup the plot characters and gain the support of the world's major powers before that man arrived. Otherwise, their chances of survival were slim.
Suddenly, a massive explosion erupted in the far distance.
As Kaito ran, he saw swarms of Cursed Spirits emerging from several large buildings, drawn by the commotion. He frowned. He realized that in this city—supposedly the most prosperous metropolis in Asia—he had run for this long and hadn't seen a single living person. The vast city of Tokyo had truly become a dead silent capital.
Remembering the main quest description, he grew curious. Just what had happened to this Jujutsu Kaisen world? What had that Reincarnator, DM66616387, done to turn the world into this? In a single 30-day mission, he had not only killed an impossible target like Gojo Satoru, but had also wiped out the Zenin Clan and destroyed Jujutsu High… Was he a high-tier Reincarnator who had entered this world through some special means? No, that was impossible. The Nexus would have intervened, and the mission difficulty would have been raised to an insane level.
Whoosh!
Kaito leaped seven meters across an alley, landing on the next rooftop. His expression was calm. He didn't look like he was fleeing; he looked like a patient hunter, waiting for the wolf to step into his trap.
Finally, that faint, needle-prick of killing intent reappeared in his senses. His ear twitched. He could hear the sound of the wingsuit cutting through the air. By now, he had run nearly six kilometers. He could feel the killing intent behind him growing stronger, the hairs on the back of his neck standing up.
He abruptly stopped. His body transitioned from extreme motion to absolute stillness. As the inertia hit him, Kaito leaped into the air, twisting, and in a flash of light, the long-neglected [Misfortune's Knock] appeared in his hand.
[Bat], gliding through the air, had been chasing the man in the pink robe, intending to herd him until he collapsed from exhaustion, at which point he would descend and finish him easily. But he hadn't expected the guy to run for six or seven kilometers without even slowing down. [Bat] sensed something was wrong. To prevent him from luring him any further away, he pulled out a high-explosive grenade, preparing to drop it.
The next moment, the running figure below him suddenly leaped into the air and spun, the transition from motion to stillness so jarring it made [Bat]'s heart stop.
He's an expert! This kind of posture… he had seen it on his own team leader. He instinctively spread his arms to climb higher.
BANG!
A sharp pain erupted in [Bat]'s shoulder and waist. He'd been hit. Fortunately, his gear had extra protection against firearms, so the wound wasn't serious. He folded his arms, spun several dozen times in the air to bleed off his speed, and landed on the street below. He immediately tossed his grenade toward Kaito and, with a flash of light, a javelin appeared in his hand.
Kaito knew his marksmanship was poor. He had only fired the gun to test the [Misfortune's Knock] effect, and more importantly, to trick his opponent into thinking he was a long-range shooter. For a Reincarnator with flight capability, if he just kept his distance, Kaito really didn't have a good way of dealing with him.
Now, seeing the man land and immediately throw two grenades, Kaito wasn't the least bit worried. He stepped forward, and in the next instant, his foot came down.
BOOM!
The ground trembled, and Kaito's figure instantly vanished.
The javelin-wielding [Bat]'s pupils trembled violently. He also had excellent dynamic vision, augmented by his tech. His radar flashed red, locking onto a series of after-images. The next moment, [Bat] also took a step, his right hand blurring as if it had disappeared.
Swish!
As Kaito rushed forward, his footwork suddenly changed. His right foot crossed in front of his left, and his body twisted, as if he were leaning against an invisible wall. He spun 180 degrees, slammed his left foot down, and the breathing from his mouth and nose exploded like a thunderclap.
CRACKLE!
That terrifying sound tore the air apart. [Bat] only felt a ferocious wind slam into his face.
BEEP-BEEP-BEEP! The alarm in his goggles shrieked. He barely had time to turn his head.
BOOM!
A dull, concussive boom echoed through the street. It was the sound of a fist moving so fast and with such power that it weaponized the air itself.
"This guy…"
Light flashed in [Bat]'s hand as another javelin appeared, but before he could even raise it, his opponent had already closed the distance, sinking his shoulder and ramming into his body.
BAM!
With a sickening crash, [Bat] felt himself flying again. He watched as his opponent rapidly shrank in his vision.
CRASH!
He was only able to feel his body again after he had smashed through a storefront window.
"Captain! Puh…"
[Bat] spat out a mouthful of blood, his chest so tight he couldn't breathe. Before he could say another word, a hand had seized him by the throat, lifting him into the air.
"The Fifth Element, huh? Not so tough."
As Kaito spoke, his ear twitched. He instantly grabbed [Bat] and spun, holding him up as a shield.
An incandescent white energy ball, radiating an intense wave of power, flew in from several kilometers away. It was already over two meters in diameter.
BOOM!
A horrific explosion detonated a dozen meters in front of Kaito. The terrifying shockwave and concussive force washed over his body. He was frozen in place, his muscles so rigid he couldn't even crush the neck of the man in his hand.
[HADOKEN]!
