Chapter 75: The Diviner
"Hah… hah…"
Ryuji Akiyama gasped for breath. He had finally managed to return to the Nexus, escaping the agonizing sensation of having his very blood evaporated.
"Heal… full restoration!"
[Detecting catastrophic physical damage to ID# YU15169987. Genetic and spiritual erosion detected. Treatment difficulty: High.]
[Restoration will cost 1 D-rank Singularity and 4300 Dimensional Points. Proceed?]
"DO IT!"
Ryuji was in agony over the price. He knew the smarter move would be to get a partial restoration and then find another Reincarnator in the Stall District to heal him for much cheaper. But he was in a hurry. A desperate hurry.
As the numbing, restorative energy flowed through his body, a manic smile spread across his face.
[Unidentified Ancient Formula (Purple)]
[Quality: Exceedingly Rare]
[Description: A mysterious ancient formula from an unknown world, possessing special pharmacological properties capable of reversing life and death and transcending human limits.]
[Effect: Unidentified. Quality may change after appraisal.]
This was it. This was the treasure he had found in Muzan's mind after enduring days of his torture, on the verge of being completely mentally assimilated. This was the prize he had stolen from that terrifying Special Reincarnator.
Ryuji's heart pounded. He didn't even take a moment to savor the stat increases from his new demon lineage. He pushed open the door to his private space and entered the public area.
He had to spread the rumor immediately that "Mercenary Tao" was the Special Reincarnator. That was the only way to send the sharks after him, ensuring he would be too busy being hunted to come looking for him. Remembering Kaito's brutal methods, Ryuji felt a renewed sense of urgency.
He appeared on the great stone bridge, but to his surprise, the brokers who usually swarmed newcomers like flies were nowhere to be seen.
Frowning, he headed toward the Stall District. Along the way, he noticed several Reincarnators giving him strange looks. He suddenly felt that something was wrong. Why are they looking at me? Is it the demon lineage? No, my avatar should be completely covering my true features. As long as I don't use my abilities, my appearance in the Nexus is fixed. And there's no real sun here, so my lineage shouldn't be exposed. Unless…
A dreadful thought occurred to Ryuji. He immediately shrouded his form in the default black mist of a newcomer, but it was too late. Several Reincarnators were already following him.
He had no choice. He instantly teleported back to his private space to escape the pursuit. But in the spot he had just vacated, several Reincarnators had already appeared, attempting to capture the residual [Information] he had left behind.
Codenamed "Vincent," Ryuji tried to contact Elizabeth through their team channel. Her reply was a single, curt message.
"Where are you? I'm near stall Y041."
Ryuji's blood ran cold. It was a perfectly normal message. Elizabeth was always this direct and emotionless. But seeing it now, he felt nothing but fear. He didn't trust her. He canceled his custom avatar, reverted to the anonymous black mist, and teleported back to the stone bridge, walking back to the bazaar disguised as a new arrival.
It was then he heard it. Dozens of Reincarnators, all discussing the [Great Sin - Special Reincarnator] Vincent, whose ID was YU15169987.
Ryuji's scalp went numb. He saw Reincarnators who specialized in tracking and divination exchanging information everywhere, trying to find any item that "Vincent" might have used or touched. He wanted to scream that the real special Reincarnator was "Mercenary Tao," but he didn't dare. He knew that the other members of his mission team—Elizabeth, the Professor—were all remaining silent. None of them were willing to publicly contradict "Mercenary Tao" and make an enemy of him.
Hsss… Ryuji hadn't expected that beast-like man to be so cunning, to set such a perfect trap for him back here. He knew that staying in the public space any longer would just leave more information for them to track. He had no choice but to leave the Nexus, wait a week or two for things to cool down, and then try to clear his name. Or, he would have to abandon this identity completely and pay a massive price to hide his ID number.
"Damn you… Mercenary Tao…"
The bearded man, Kenji Ando, wished he could wash his eyes. This customer's avatar was truly, unforgettably ugly. And he was wearing a pink robe.
The Nexus's concealment meant that even if Kaito activated his [Transparent World], he couldn't see the muscle movements beneath another player's avatar. But Kaito had his own way of analyzing the stall owners. He knew that Nexus Dwell Time was linked to a Reincarnator's star-rating. Any vendor who seemed anxious, who was short with customers, was likely a low-ranked player. And since rank was tied to Singularities, it was also tied, to some extent, to strength.
But this guy, who had set up a lounge chair at his stall and was fast asleep… he was clearly no ordinary person. His Dwell Time was probably terrifyingly abundant. This was why Kaito believed the broker who had told him this was the best divination stall in the East Sector.
Kaito was slightly disappointed that the stall owner couldn't appreciate his artistic creation, but he wasn't angry. He simply repeated his request. "Excuse me, can you give me a divination reading?"
Kenji Ando was in a bad mood. The [Great Sin] Reincarnators were always terrible news. Every time one appeared, they brought chaos and slaughter. They were anomalies, constitutionally incapable of coexisting with others. They killed everyone, rose in power quickly, pissed off someone truly powerful, and then got themselves killed. They were just a pack of wild animals, as far as he was concerned.
He had been about to refuse the customer, but for some reason, his drowsiness had vanished. Kenji sat up. He reluctantly pulled out three old, bronze coins, all while forcing himself to look at his customer. The man's gaze was sharp, clearly analyzing him. And behind that mask, there was an incredibly powerful aura, a sign that this was no simple character.
Kenji understood. His sleepiness vanishing was his own spiritual intuition, warning him that this person before him was the real deal. This man had an extraordinary fate.
He tossed the three coins onto the stall. "Grab these. Think about what you want to ask, and then toss them three times." It was the setup for an I Ching reading.
Kaito shook his head. "I'm not here to have my fortune told."
Kenji's expression turned cold. He knew what this meant. "I'm not the kind of place that helps people hunt down others." He lay back down, not even bothering to listen to an offer.
"Hey!" a new voice called out from a few stalls down. "If Lazy Ken won't take the job, I will! You just need to divine another Reincarnator's info, right? If you've got the points, it's easy!"
Kaito glanced at the newcomer, a wizard-wannabe in a green robe, then looked back at the lazy man. There was a unique "scent" about this man, different from any other Reincarnator he had met. His logic wasn't driven by profit. Could there really be a Reincarnator who doesn't need resources?
The wizard-cosplayer was already rushing over. Kaito ignored him. A light flashed in his hand, and he produced a small, sealed bottle of rum.
[Mediocre Rum]
[Quality: White]
[Description: An ordinary rum from a certain world. Was carried by a pirate crew for over a year.]
[Effect: After drinking, slightly restores stamina, with a small chance of causing a stomach ache.]
Kaito held the bottle. "Please divine the location of the Reincarnator who last held this item," he said. "Price… is not an issue."
At stall Y041, Elizabeth looked at the empty spot where Vincent was supposed to meet her. She now knew for certain that he would never trust her again. She dismissed the idea of risking "Mercenary Tao's" wrath to warn him.
[You have left Team #76553. You have been penalized 3000 Dimensional Points.]
Elizabeth turned and vanished into the crowd.
