Chapter 63: Sage Art - Great Devil Lance
The force of the explosion was magnified terrifyingly in the confined space of the basement. Flames erupted towards the sky.
Nakime, who was at the epicenter, was instantly blown to pieces. Even Muzan Kibutsuji, who was furthest away, only had time to sprout a mass of fleshy tumors to shield himself before being swallowed by the high-temperature inferno. The space was simply too small; it was the optimal kill zone for a high-explosive grenade.
"AAAAH!"
Muzan howled in agony from within the flames.
Kokushibo and Douma, however, allowed their bodies to be torn apart and then began to re-form. One had an unshakable will to fight; the other was completely incapable of feeling pain.
Suddenly, both of them looked up at the same time. From within the gray-white smoke of the still-searing heat, a tall figure came crashing down with berserk force.
In that moment, even Douma's eyes widened, perfectly mimicking the human emotion of "astonishment" that he could not feel.
"This human," he chirped, "must be a madman."
Kokushibo's expression remained calm. From their brief battle, he had already discerned that this human possessed an extraordinary talent.
BOOM!
Kaito landed. Golden ripples of Hamon, like flowing water, continuously radiated from his hands. The mere sight of this power put both Kokushibo and Douma on high alert.
In the two demons' heightened perception, Kaito lifted his left foot high, then slammed it down.
BOOM!
Muzan's heart leaped, thinking another explosion was coming. He once again shielded himself with a wall of flesh. But Kaito had already vanished, charging through the superheated smoke, straight for Douma.
Douma's eyes narrowed. Although he possessed no human emotions—no fear, no pain, no joy—he understood the logic behind his opponent's action. This human was doing this for one reason only: he believed that Douma was the easiest of them to kill.
"Heehee~"
Douma almost laughed with delight. He had lost count of how many humans he had eaten, how many of the so-called [Hashira] he had killed. But he had never thought that one day, he, of all people, would be seen as the weak link by a mere human, chosen as the priority target.
WHOOSH!
The air in the confined space roared like a hurricane from the speed of their movement.
Douma waved one of his golden fans, and a cloud of fine ice crystals, like a freezing mist, scattered outwards. In an instant, a flurry of blue, frozen rain cleared the hot smoke from the air.
Blood Demon Art - Scattering Lotuses!
VMMMM!
Douma suddenly felt a roaring in his ears as an immense force slammed into the side of his head. The next moment, his body was lifted uncontrollably from the ground. His rainbow-colored pupils trembled as he finally focused his vision.
A human, his face and arms covered in blisters from the intense heat, had clamped one hand on his head and, with savage force, had spun him around and smashed him into the ground.
CRASH!
The floor shook again. Douma felt no pain, but in that moment, as his face seemed to melt from the impact, he had the strange sensation that he was floating away. He raised his iron fan to counter, but in the next instant, Kaito exhaled a blast of scorching white breath. His right hand blurred, seeming to disappear, then reappeared, catching the fan and, with a terrifying surge of strength, reversing its direction and plunging it into Douma's own chest.
SHIING!
The sound of a singing blade. Kokushibo leaped into the air. His Moon Breathing and Blood Demon Art merged, and even before his sword had fully descended, an intense sharpness seemed to cut at Kaito's skin from a distance.
But Kaito paid it no mind. He raised his fist, Hamon surging, and prepared to strike down.
Douma, too, felt no fear in the face of death. He had only paused for a fraction of a second when his attack was interrupted. In the next instant, a rain of countless ice lances began to fall from above.
Kaito abruptly changed his punch to a grip, seized Douma, and effortlessly swung him like a weapon.
WHIRL!
CRASH! CRASH! CRASH!
The shower of ice lances was shattered by Douma's own body. The momentum didn't stop, and Kaito threw him directly at Kokushibo.
Kokushibo's eyes were half-closed, his expression unreadable. His sword technique erupted.
[Moon Breathing, Fourteenth Form: Catastrophe - Tenman Crescent Moon]!
Completely ignoring everyone else in the basement, Kokushibo unleashed a devastating attack. A vortex of countless crescent-shaped sword slashes tore through the space in all directions.
Douma, who was directly in the path, was instantly sliced into several pieces. But even as his body was being shredded, the smile remained on his half-melted face. His blood was now everywhere. This space would soon become a burial ground of deadly poison. His Blood Demon Art was the bane of all Breathing Style users!
Kaito exhaled another cloud of white, misty breath. He had already used up two of the massive breaths he had inhaled earlier. He didn't have much time left. But…
It was enough!
Kaito's heart was beating so fast he could no longer distinguish the individual beats. His blood felt like it was about to burst from his veins. His muscles bulged, swelling to an unbelievable degree. As blood flooded his entire body, his eyes turned completely white. Everything seemed to slow down: Douma, now in several pieces, was still reaching out, controlling his blood to form ice-blue crystals; Kokushibo, continuously swinging Kyokokukamikiri, his sword strikes a relentless storm.
Every movement was in slow motion in Kaito's eyes. He, too, felt as if he were trapped in an invisible swamp, his every move carrying the weight of a mountain.
Not enough. It's still not enough!
Kaito was so intensely focused that he didn't even notice that his "aura," which had been overwhelmingly powerful in the eyes of others, had slowly vanished.
He looked at Kokushibo. His muscles, his blood, even the rhythm of his breathing—it all became crystal clear. He wasn't just sensing his own blood flow anymore; he was beginning to grasp Kokushibo's as well. The complex vortex of his sword style was, bit by bit, becoming clear in Kaito's eyes.
BOOM!
The next moment, the terrifying storm of sword strikes swept through the area. The sturdy basement collapsed, and a cloud of dust and debris engulfed everything.
Kokushibo frowned. The fighting spirit… it's gone…
"AGH!" A pained cry.
It's Nakime!
Kokushibo instantly realized what had happened. He spun around, swinging his sword toward Nakime's location in a crescent arc.
SLICE!
The sword wind cut through the smoke, but the sight it revealed was of Muzan Kibutsuji absorbing Nakime into his own body. Her body was already half-devoured.
"Hahhh~"
Whoosh!
Kokushibo felt a wind at his back. He knew it was just the sound of a living creature exhaling all the air from its lungs.
Kaito expelled his final breath, then took a massive gulp of air. To Douma's cruel amusement, he inhaled the icy crystals that were filled with his poisonous blood.
Kaito's height now exceeded two meters. His muscles looked as if they were about to explode, and his veins stood out in stark relief. But what Kokushibo noticed was that the burn blisters from the heat and the cuts from his own sword wind had all completely vanished from Kaito's skin. Circles of ripple energy, like two flowing ribbons, radiated from his fists.
"Muzan. Douma and Kokushibo wanted to fight me to the death. But you… you were secretly trying to run away, weren't you?"
Kaito formed his right hand into a spearhead. The ripple energy around it was disturbed, and began to vibrate violently.
CREAK. CREAK. CREAK…
With a terrifying sound, his muscles began to compress, inch by inch. His heartbeat, which was already a continuous hum, was now a deafening drum in the demons' ears.
The next moment, a golden light, like a spear several meters long, shot through the entire underground space.
[Sage Art - Great Devil Lance]!
BOOM!
