Chapter 79 - I don't need a hero.

POV SHURI

I finished applying the spray to the last wound and pulled my hand away.

The barbarian in front of me let out a grunt, but at least he'd stopped writhing.

"Don't get too excited. When this is over, you'll either be executed or spend the rest of your life in a cell."

I straightened and looked over the small canister Legion had given me before leaving.

By now, I'd used enough to get a fairly clear idea of what it contained and how it worked. It reduced pain almost immediately, disinfected the affected area, then formed a thin layer over the wound a few seconds later to help seal it.

Not bad.

I rolled the spray between my fingers, examining it one last time.

"Hmm..."

After glancing around, I discreetly slipped it into one of my suit's compartments.

"We'll see just how good you really are with medicine later, Legion."

"Pathetic."

I turned toward Orka.

The massive Atlantean remained trapped inside the foam, with only part of his face visible.

"Showing mercy to your enemies," he continued. "Even after they tried to kill you."

"Shut up. I only did this because my friend asked me to. Not because I care about any of you."

I crouched to pick up the container where I'd stored the chip, though before opening it, I looked back at him.

"And by the way... are you seriously going to lecture me about ridiculous things when you were defeated by a piece of foam?"

Orka clenched his jaw.

I couldn't help smiling.

"Pff. That's rich coming from a fish."

I didn't give him time to answer.

Opening the small container, I picked up the chip between two fingers.

At first glance, it didn't look particularly impressive, but the moment I placed it in front of my lens and magnified the image a few times, my smile vanished.

"Incredible..."

I zoomed in again.

The internal architecture was strange. Its connections didn't follow entirely fixed paths. The circuitry appeared capable of redistributing some of its own channels depending on the information being processed, almost as though certain sections could reorganize themselves to make better use of available resources.

That alone was interesting.

But the density was even more impressive.

There was practically no wasted space between components, and some of the connections were so small that even with Wakandan technology, reproducing them with that level of precision would have required specialized equipment.

I tilted my head slightly.

"Very interesting."

I didn't recognize the manufacturing method.

That didn't happen often.

A small compartment opened along my suit's forearm, and I carefully inserted the chip.

Several lines of information immediately appeared across my lens.

EXTERNAL DEVICE DETECTED

INITIATING ISOLATION...

ANALYZING ARCHITECTURE...

I waited.

A progress bar appeared.

3%

I snorted.

"I hate loading screens."

7%

"We can build hidden cities out of vibranium, heal wounds in seconds, and control vehicles from the other side of the planet..."

11%

"...but apparently no one has figured out how to get rid of these."

CRACK

I blinked.

The bar kept moving.

14%

I raised my head and surveyed the vault.

Nothing seemed to have changed. The barbarians remained where I'd left them, and the lights continued functioning normally. With all the chaos going on throughout Atlantis, the sound could easily have come from some nearby structure giving way during the fighting.

Then I looked toward Orka.

He was still watching me.

Completely silent.

He no longer looked irritated.

Not even angry.

Just... serious.

My eyes narrowed slightly.

"What's with the face?"

"I'm just looking at a corpse."

A small laugh escaped me.

"You're very melodramatic. Didn't your mother ever tell you that?"

The progress bar moved again.

19%

I glanced down at the data.

CRACK

This time it was much louder.

I spun around.

A fracture ran through the foam holding the enormous Atlantean in place. Another appeared almost immediately, spreading from his shoulder before disappearing beneath the hardened mass.

Orka gritted his teeth.

His arms slowly began pulling apart.

"Oh, no..."

CRACK

The foam gave way.

A section near his chest broke loose first. Another piece flew off one of his arms, and with one final burst of strength, he violently forced both limbs apart.

The prison shattered.

White fragments drifted in every direction as the giant launched himself toward me.

There was barely enough time to react.

One hand came straight for my head.

I twisted aside and watched those enormous fingers pass inches from my helmet's visor.

Too close.

But he wasn't trying to catch me in a single move.

His other arm was already coming down.

The fist struck my abdomen.

My armor creaked.

Every bit of air left my lungs as I was hurled into the vault floor. My back slammed into the metal surface, and before I could even finish bouncing, a shadow appeared above me.

He reached down.

He was going to slam me again.

Both arms came up.

The sonic emitters in my gauntlets activated simultaneously.

The wave struck him directly in the head.

The Atlantean grunted and froze for a moment, bringing one hand to the side of his face.

It wasn't much.

But it was enough.

I planted both feet against his chest and activated my thrusters.

The burst launched me backward before he could get hold of me.

I kept moving until several yards separated us, then brought a hand to my abdomen.

Breathing hurt.

A metallic taste spread through my mouth.

Blood.

The armor had absorbed most of the impact, but that didn't mean my body had escaped unharmed.

Fantastic.

The giant straightened to his full height.

He watched me for several seconds.

Then smiled.

"This time, I'll finish what I started in the titan prison."

I straightened as much as the pain allowed.

"Have you been... ow... practicing that line?"

His smile vanished.

"You don't have your hero here to save you anymore, Princess."

He slowly spread his arms.

"And you won't be as lucky this time."

A notification appeared on my lens.

INTEGRATION: 26%

Still a long way to go.

A very long way.

Orka leaned forward and charged.

He was fast.

Far faster than someone his size had any right to be.

I fired the right thruster and dodged at the last possible moment.

His shoulder passed inches away.

For half a second, I thought it had worked.

Then his arm came back around.

I never saw it coming.

The back of his hand struck me from the side and sent me flying several yards.

I crashed into one of the vault's massive shelving units.

The metal buckled behind my back.

"GH!"

I pushed away from the structure before he could pin me against it.

The Atlantean turned.

"You're fast."

"Thanks."

"But not fast enough."

He came at me again.

This time, I didn't wait.

Two explosive daggers came out and flew straight toward his torso.

He crossed his arms.

The detonations briefly illuminated the vault, surrounding him in a cloud of bubbles.

I backed away and waited.

A massive silhouette emerged through the cloud.

Still coming.

His armor showed a few marks.

He didn't seem particularly impressed.

"Of course."

The daggers could bother him.

They couldn't stop him.

The giant swung.

I dodged.

A second punch followed immediately.

Both arms came up to block it.

Mistake.

The impact sent me backward as though my armor weighed absolutely nothing.

A warning flashed before my eye.

SUIT INTEGRITY: 83%

"Thanks... for the warning."

Noted.

Don't try that again.

Orka didn't give me time to recover.

He propelled himself forward with both hands extended.

Another sonic wave fired.

This time, he turned his face slightly and shielded one side of his head with his forearm.

The blast made him flinch.

He kept coming.

His fingers closed around my leg.

"Shit."

He pulled.

Everything spun.

One moment I was facing him.

The next, my back slammed into another structure.

The entire vault trembled.

I tried to get up.

A massive hand closed around my neck before I could.

"Got you, Princess."

I activated the forearm thruster.

Nothing.

The difference in strength was ridiculous.

Orka yanked me closer and threw a punch with his free hand.

I turned my head.

His fist passed beside my helmet.

A sonic blast struck him square in the chest in response.

It barely pushed him back.

Wrong frequency.

Before I could change it, he threw me.

My thrusters fired halfway across the room, letting me correct my trajectory before hitting the wall.

I stopped near the ceiling.

Breathed.

Thought.

The daggers could hurt him, but I'd need far too many to accomplish anything useful.

The sonic attacks worked around his head, though he'd already started anticipating them.

And trying to compete with him physically...

My eyes flicked toward the suit integrity reading.

Yeah.

Completely out of the question.

The massive soldier began rising toward me.

"That armor is only delaying the inevitable."

My eyes swept across the vault.

Shelves.

Containers.

Columns.

Bulkheads.

The lens highlighted a section along one side.

SECURITY TRANSFER CHAMBER

My attention lingered there for a moment.

It was a small chamber positioned between two sections of the vault, designed to move dangerous objects without leaving both areas connected at the same time.

One door at either end.

Reinforced walls.

Useful information.

I didn't have a plan yet.

And he was already coming.

I moved aside just as his fist struck the ceiling.

The metal plate buckled.

Dropping beneath his arm, I threw a dagger toward his side.

He dodged.

That was new.

The second went for his face.

His left arm immediately came up.

The explosion twisted him slightly.

Left arm protecting the head.

Torso turning right.

And then...

The right fist came toward me.

This time, I was ready.

I dropped.

The blow sailed overhead.

A burst from my thrusters carried me behind him, and I fired a sonic wave into the back of his head.

Orka roared and spun violently.

His hand clipped my shoulder before I could get away.

For a second, I lost control of the thrusters.

That was enough.

The next hit sent me crashing into the floor again.

I tried to get up.

My abdomen protested immediately.

Too slow.

A massive figure descended in front of me.

"Your tricks don't work."

I propelled myself backward just as his fist struck the spot I'd occupied.

"Yes, thank you for pointing out the obvious."

Another charge.

I moved aside.

Same shoulder again.

Same defensive motion.

Then the right hand.

His movements weren't identical every time.

The structure was.

He was a trained soldier.

Strong.

Experienced.

And far too accustomed to overcoming resistance by simply applying even more force.

That could be useful.

Another dagger left my hand.

Not toward him.

Toward one of the supports beneath a massive storage structure.

The explosion tore through part of the metal.

Orka glanced over.

Only for an instant.

Then he resumed chasing me.

The shelving unit began to tilt.

I swam toward it.

"Finally decided to surrender?"

"What makes you think that?"

I passed beside the structure.

The support gave out.

Tons of metal came down on the Atlantean.

He turned and raised both arms.

He caught it.

Of course he caught it.

His feet braced against the floor while he held the enormous mass above his head.

"Seriously?"

With a roar, he threw it aside.

I moved before getting caught in its path.

Fine.

That didn't work either.

But I'd learned something.

Holding the structure had required both arms.

Both sonic emitters fired toward his head.

The impact forced him backward.

I moved toward his right side and fired again using only the left emitter.

Just as expected, he protected his face.

His other arm drew back.

My thrusters activated before he could counterattack, carrying me underneath him.

His fist struck nothing but water.

By the time he turned, I was already behind him.

Another shot.

This time, I adjusted the frequency slightly.

The Atlantean gritted his teeth.

I moved out of reach before he could touch me.

That worked better.

Not much.

But better.

Another adjustment.

He charged.

We repeated the sequence.

Shot.

Guard.

Counterattack.

Dodge.

Different frequency.

His body shuddered harder this time.

There was something there.

I didn't need a more powerful attack.

I needed to find the frequency he was especially sensitive to.

"STOP RUNNING!"

"I'm swimming."

Another punch.

I moved aside.

"We're underwater. It's fairly normal."

He growled.

Another swing.

Another miss.

"But I understand how that might be confusing."

His breathing had grown heavier.

He was still fast, but he'd stopped judging distance properly.

Stopped anticipating my movements.

Now he was chasing me.

That worked much better.

I guided the fight toward one side of the vault.

The transfer chamber came into view ahead.

I didn't enter immediately.

First, another sonic blast.

Orka covered his head.

I switched sides.

His guard followed.

The right fist came next.

I dodged.

Again.

Same principle.

Same response.

"I'm getting tired of you," he growled.

"That explains a lot."

"What?"

"The way you're fighting."

His expression hardened.

"You know nothing about combat."

"You think so? You know, Father used to give my brother the same piece of advice quite often."

I slowly backed toward the chamber's first door.

"He said a warrior's worst enemy could be himself. That powerful emotions eventually cloud the mind."

Orka advanced.

"Fear."

Another stroke backward.

"Sadness."

His jaw tightened.

"Anger."

"SHUT UP!"

I smiled.

"They make you stupid."

I thought for a second.

"Although in your case, I suppose that would make you stupid squared."

His expression changed.

There it was.

"I'M GOING TO KILL YOU!"

He launched himself straight at me.

No defense.

No sense of distance.

He didn't even bother checking where I was leading him.

I passed through the first doorway and entered the transfer chamber.

The giant followed.

I kept swimming until I'd crossed the second door and reached the adjoining section.

Then I turned.

"Orka."

He looked up.

"I don't think you're fast enough, are you?"

"I'M GOING TO RIP THAT ARMOR OFF YOU!"

I activated the lock.

The bulkhead separating us began descending.

The Atlantean accelerated.

Both hands caught the bottom edge before it could fully close.

Metal groaned.

His arms tensed.

And slowly...

The door began rising.

My smile disappeared.

"Hey, hey. That's cheating."

The giant grunted as he pushed.

Inch by inch, he was overpowering the door's motors.

My eyes shifted toward the mechanism beside the frame.

A dagger came into my hand.

"Don't worry. I'll give you a hand."

I threw it.

The explosion struck the system controlling the door.

Its casing buckled.

Several warning lights began flashing.

The bulkhead jerked sharply downward.

Orka roared.

His arms held.

He could still stop it.

But he couldn't force it upward anymore.

Now all he was doing was preventing it from closing completely.

That was enough.

I looked past his shoulder.

The entrance we'd both used to enter the chamber remained fully open.

One hand moved toward the control panel.

"Orka."

The giant glared at me through clenched teeth.

I activated the other door.

A heavy metallic sound echoed behind him.

His head turned.

The entrance bulkhead began descending.

His eyes widened.

"NO!"

He released one hand from the door he was holding and tried to turn around.

The barrier separating us immediately dropped several inches.

He had no choice but to grab it again with both hands.

His head snapped backward.

Then toward me.

Then back at the door closing behind him.

He couldn't stop both.

The first bulkhead sealed shut.

CLANG

Locked.

Orka focused entirely on me again.

He pushed.

The structure vibrated.

But the mechanism I'd damaged no longer helped raise the door.

Now he was fighting its weight, the locking system, and his own exhaustion.

He managed to lift it a few inches.

Then lost ground.

The bulkhead descended again.

"PRINCESS!"

Another jerk.

Lower.

"OPEN THIS DAMN DOOR!"

I placed one hand against the outside.

"Nope."

He tried lifting it again.

Couldn't.

The bulkhead reached the floor.

CLANG

The safety lights changed.

CHAMBER SEALED

A slow breath left my lungs.

Finally.

He was trapped.

A brutal impact shook the door from the other side.

Then another.

The structure held.

"PRINCESS!"

"Yes?"

"WHEN I GET OUT OF HERE...!"

"You're not getting out."

Both forearms pressed against the door.

I selected the frequency that had produced the strongest reaction during our fight.

The emitters activated.

Vibrations traveled through the bulkhead and into the chamber.

The shouting on the other side abruptly stopped.

I waited barely a second.

Fired again.

The waves struck the reinforced surfaces inside the small compartment, sending part of the vibration back from several directions.

This time, the energy didn't dissipate like before.

It stayed contained.

Bounced.

Struck again.

Another impact hit the door.

Weaker.

I adjusted the frequency slightly.

Fired.

"STOP!"

Another wave traveled through the chamber.

The next impact took longer to come.

Then I understood.

There was no need to increase the power.

I only needed to keep him inside.

Each discharge came back at him again and again while the chamber walls accomplished what my weapons couldn't in open water.

Another impact.

Weaker.

Then one more.

I waited.

"You know what's funny?"

No answer.

"You kept saying I needed a hero to save me."

The emitters activated again.

"And that I'd gotten lucky."

A faint tremor ran through the door.

Smaller than before.

"I don't need either."

I maintained the frequency.

One final impact came from the other side.

Then...

Nothing.

I shut down the emitters.

For several seconds, I remained motionless in front of the bulkhead.

Waiting.

No threats came.

No movement.

My visor began processing the readings from inside.

VITAL SIGNS: NOT DETECTED

"I can kick your ass perfectly well on my own."

The pain in my abdomen returned the moment the adrenaline began fading.

One hand moved toward the bruised area.

"Yeah... that's going to hurt tomorrow."

Another notification appeared.

DEVICE INTEGRATION: 54%

I stared at it.

The bar slowly moved forward.

55%

My eyes closed.

"Of course."

56%

I snorted.

"Still hate loading screens."

Looking away, I surveyed what remained of the vault.

The fight had made a mess of everything.

Several shelves had overturned or warped, containers floated open among the wreckage, and small pieces of metal continued drifting with the currents. Orka's men remained scattered across different areas of the room, some unconscious, others too badly injured to attempt anything.

I took in the scene for a few seconds.

"This place is depressing."

There was no point standing around watching a progress bar.

I headed toward the exit while checking the integration again.

58%

Still a long way to go.

"Fine. You do your thing. In the meantime, I'll..."

I moved the interface out of my field of vision and activated the suit's systems.

If I had to wait, I might as well use the time to find out what the hell was happening outside.

After all, Legion had been gone for a while.

===

Hunter remained thoughtful for several seconds, one hand resting against his chin.

Behind them stood the castle walls, while the hidden passage they'd used to leave disappeared once again among the stone.

"So... all of this was orchestrated by a hidden Nazi organization called Hydra."

T'Challa nodded.

"They aren't working alone. They have collaborators inside other organizations, and probably in more places than we currently know. The problem is that we still don't know everyone involved."

Hunter fell silent and exchanged a brief glance with the woman beside him.

She answered with a slight nod.

After a few seconds, he exhaled and turned his attention back to his brother.

"That is definitely a problem... one I'll deal with when I return home. Still..."

He extended one hand, palm facing upward.

T'Challa looked down at it.

It wasn't an invitation to shake.

Hunter was waiting for something.

"What?"

"Give it to me."

The prince frowned.

"Excuse me?"

"The bomb."

T'Challa's body tensed instinctively.

Only for an instant.

Hunter noticed.

"Bomb? What are you talking about?"

His brother slowly shook his head.

"Come on, T'Challa. Don't play dumb with me. Our father wouldn't send the Black Panther, much less his own son, into enemy territory merely to 'discuss peace treaties.'"

T'Challa remained silent.

"T'Chaka trained me from childhood to do what he himself would eventually have to do once his body could no longer keep up with Wakanda's needs. I know him. I know how he thinks."

Hunter briefly glanced at the hand he still held out.

"I may have been the one who suggested using the bomb, and he may have rejected the idea at the time, but some part of our father always knew it was the right choice. If you're here, if he personally sent you to Atlantis, then he realized his mistake and finally did what he should have done from the beginning."

He stepped closer and placed his free hand on T'Challa's shoulder.

"But I know you too, brother. You have a good heart. You're compassionate, even when that makes things harder."

T'Challa tilted his head slightly.

"It isn't right."

"I know."

Hunter held his gaze and raised his open hand a little higher between them.

"Which is why you should leave it to me. You don't need to carry this, T'Challa. Give me the bomb, and I'll handle the rest."

The prince looked down.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

His thoughts returned to his father, the orders he'd received before leaving Wakanda, and all the damage Atlantis could inflict on his home, especially now that Namor and part of his army were already on their way to attack it.

One hand slowly moved toward his belt.

His fingers found the small object hidden among the suit's compartments and pulled it free.

The sphere rested in his palm as he began extending his arm.

Hunter reached toward it.

"Leave it to me. I'll take care of everything."

The hand resting on T'Challa's shoulder tightened slightly.

He stared down at the bomb.

All he had to do was let go.

Hunter would handle the rest.

"But remember that when those who move you are kings or men of power, you must guard your soul. Because when you stand before God, you will not be able to say, 'Others told me to do it,' or 'virtue was inconvenient at the time.' That will not be enough."

T'Challa's fingers stopped opening.

Hunter watched him carefully.

"T'Challa..."

"Every day I pray that my decisions are the right ones, T'Challa, because for men like us, taking or ruining thousands of lives is far easier than protecting them... and that is why we must be careful."

The prince's fingers slowly closed around the bomb.

Handing it over would be easier.

So much easier.

Hunter would carry the burden.

He would decide where to place it, when to activate it, and would be the one forced to live with the knowledge of exactly what he'd done.

T'Challa could return to Wakanda telling himself he'd obeyed his father.

That he'd protected his people.

That he hadn't been the one to press the button.

But that would be a lie.

If he handed Hunter the bomb while knowing exactly how it would be used, whose hand activated it would change nothing.

Anyone who died would still be dead because of a decision he'd allowed.

Families.

Civilians.

Thousands of people who'd had no part in Namor's decisions.

All because placing that weight on someone else's shoulders was easier than carrying it himself.

Hunter moved his hand closer.

T'Challa watched his fingers.

Then looked back at the sphere.

Doing this might be convenient for Wakanda.

It might even be exactly what his father expected of him.

But convenience and justice were not the same thing.

His hand closed completely around the bomb.

Hunter frowned.

"Brother..."

T'Challa slowly drew his arm back.

Hunter's other hand remained on his shoulder.

The prince returned the sphere to his belt.

"No."

Hunter stared at him in surprise.

"It isn't right."

His brother's expression shifted.

"We already established that."

"No."

T'Challa slowly shook his head.

"I'm not only talking about the bomb. I mean giving it to you so I can convince myself afterward that I wasn't responsible."

Hunter remained silent.

"If I hand it over knowing what you intend to do, it doesn't matter who ultimately activates it. The decision will still be mine."

"T'Challa, I'm trying to protect you from carrying something you don't need to carry."

"And that is exactly the problem."

The prince held his gaze.

"It would be easier to let you do it. Easier to tell myself I obeyed our father, that I did what was necessary for Wakanda, and that the deaths weren't truly on my hands."

His voice remained calm.

"But it wouldn't be true."

Hunter's jaw tightened.

"We're talking about the safety of our people."

"I know."

"And if Atlantis turns its weapons against Wakanda..."

"I know, Hunter."

T'Challa placed a hand over the one still resting on his shoulder and gently removed it.

"But I cannot condemn hundreds of thousands of people for something they haven't done yet merely because doing so might make things easier for us tomorrow."

Hunter watched him silently.

T'Challa took a small step back.

"No, brother."

His expression hardened.

"This isn't right."

A brief silence settled between them.

"And I won't allow it to happen."

Hunter kept his eyes on his brother for several seconds.

Then his attention shifted toward Okoye, who stood a short distance behind T'Challa.

"And you agree with this, General?"

The Dora Milaje lifted her chin slightly.

"I serve and protect. If my prince has decided this is the path he will take, then I will stand with him."

The leader of the Hatut Zeraze slowly nodded several times, as though her answer merely confirmed something he had already expected.

Eventually, he sighed and looked back toward T'Challa.

"I knew it would end this way... but I wanted to avoid it."

One hand rose slightly.

Thousands of tiny red dots instantly appeared across Okoye's body.

T'Challa's eyes widened.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?"

The general glanced down at the lasers covering her armor and part of her face, though her posture never changed.

Hunter kept his hand raised.

"Why don't we settle this the old-fashioned way, brother? The way Father likes it."

T'Challa frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"A fight."

He said it as though the answer were obvious.

"Winner gets the bomb."

T'Challa stared at him in disbelief.

"Have you lost your mind?"

Hunter shook his head.

"No. My duty is to protect Wakanda, no matter the cost. And right now, believe me, I'm being generous."

"You call this generous?"

"Of course."

His tone didn't change.

"For you. For Shuri. Both of you always treated me like a brother, even with Father's constant reminders about what I truly was to the family."

For a moment, some of the hardness left his expression.

"That's precisely why I don't want to kill either of you. If I can avoid reaching that point, I will."

His attention returned to T'Challa's belt, where the bomb remained hidden.

"We fight. Whoever wins keeps it and decides what happens next."

The prince glanced toward Okoye.

"They're Hatut Zeraze. Knowing them, this probably already counts as preferential treatment, my prince."

Hunter nodded once.

"I'm glad the general understands us."

"I didn't say I approve."

A faint smile appeared on Hunter's face.

"We both know that's a lie. I know everything you've done for the royal family, Okoye."

He began moving away from the group, creating enough space between himself and T'Challa.

"Either way, get ready, brother."

Hunter rolled his shoulders.

"Physical only. No weapons, no tricks. Once one of us can no longer continue, that's enough. Understood?"

T'Challa watched him for several seconds.

He clearly wasn't thrilled by the idea, but eventually accepted that arguing wasn't going to get them anywhere.

He stepped away from Okoye and the others until he stood several yards opposite his brother.

"With everything happening right now... we're seriously doing this?"

Hunter adjusted his shoulders.

"Whatever happens here is none of our concern."

T'Challa frowned.

"We're in the middle of Atlantis."

"I know."

"And the city is under attack."

"Exactly."

Hunter gestured faintly toward the distance, where echoes of battle could still be heard.

"Besides, once the bomb goes off, no one will have to worry about them anymore."

T'Challa held his gaze for a moment before settling into a fighting stance.

"You remind me of Father."

Hunter shrugged and did the same.

"I already told you. He trained me from childhood to do what was necessary when he could no longer do it himself."

He bent his knees slightly.

"Just like he would."
