I hide in the broken building for a long time. I listen hard but I hear no one coming for me. I am all alone. I look down at my hands. They is still covered in dry blood. That blood is from the man I tried to save. Now it reminds me of my new power. My old life is over. The MHB knows my name and where I live. I cannot ever go back.
I am very cold and thirsty. I have no money and no place to go. The ghost voice that helped me is now quiet. I feel completely alone. I know I need to understand this power. I see a dead fly on the dusty window. I remember the rats that listened to me. I focus and feel the cold feeling inside. I push my want toward the fly. The fly's leg twitches. Its wings buzz. It flies for one second before falling down again. I feel scared but also powerful. This is real.
Then I hear rough voices nearby. They are not police or MHB. They are looters—bad people who come to steal after a fight. Two big men walk into the room. They see me. They give me nasty smiles. They ask for my money and phone. I tell them I have nothing. The bigger man grabs my shirt and shakes me. I am trapped and scared. I look around for help and see a dead bird in the corner.
I feel angry and afraid. I push all my feeling toward the dead bird. The bird's head snaps up. It flies right at the men's faces. The men yell in surprise. They let me go and try to block the bird. I run. I run out the back door into the darkness. I run until my lungs hurt. I stop in a dark alley. I am safe for now.
I understand now. My power is for small dead things. Things nobody cares about. Maybe I am like that too. This is how I will survive.
I lean against the wall, catching my breath. The night is quiet. Then I hear it. A new voice in my head. It is not the ghost. This voice is different. It says, "We see you. You are like us. Come find us."
