Chapter 49 - Pursuit of the Pursuer (V)

'This is ridiculous! Kuno, keep me informed on yours and Leo's location. I'm going to break off and try to corner it.' The angle relays, instead of saying out loud.

"Fine. Just don't go too far." I called out.

When we reached the paved road to the estate, connecting it to the main street and the nearby market, the angel ran down the road next to the market. A block away, but close enough for my array's range.

Running through the market, trying to catch up to the son, he kept the Substitute and me updated on where the Volnnic was headed.

Although the info was pointless.

Following their path, they left only a road of destruction. Windows were shattered, the interiors of some stores were destroyed, and the clothes of some passersby were torn. They even managed to flip a carriage. Its horses futilely struggling to return upright.

'What in the Monarchs did you do?!' The Substitute asked, staring at all the damage as we ran by.

'It's not my fault. I swear, the Beast was purposefully trying to destroy everything!' The son defended himself.

Running through the market, along the side of the road, dodging people, store wares, and the flipped carriage, the Substitute and I managed to catch up to the son.

The Volnnic, wreaking havoc on the streets, spent more time destroying property than trying to get away from its pursuers.

After playing the son through another shop, the Beast noticed our arrival, breaking out in a dash down the road.

Waiting for us to catch up, the son continued alongside us in the pursuit.

'Lavinia, we're still heading North. Just follow along a block away.' I relayed. Not wanting her to lose track of the Beast.

The Volnnic, now on an open road to gain increasing speed, slowly widened the gap between us.

In this continuous chase, we left the market and stores and entered the administrative section of this part of the District. Important buildings taller than the gate walls spotted the area.

So much for keeping a low profile. We've ran through two District sections now, and this one's busier this time of day.

As the Volnnic ran through crowds of people, each one jumping out of its way upon noticing it, the son was able to keep the people separated. Yelling hectic orders, allowing us to run by without having to push past anyone.

The Volnnic, building up enough speed, prepared to launch into a powerful bolt to lose us.

Up ahead, a man looking down at parchments in his hands walked out of the reporting building. Straight in the path of the Beast.

Too engrossed in the information on the parchments, he failed to hear any of our warnings to get out of the way.

Too fast to slow down, or change direction dramatically, the Beast ran head-first into the unaware man.

Using him as a directional foot stool, the Beast leaped off his chest and into the reporting building.

'You two, stay by the entrance! I'll chase it out. Just be ready to catch it!' The son relayed.

Sliding to a halt, the Substitute and I waited by the building's entrance, while the son chased the Volnnic inside.

'Keep us updated, Leo.' The Substitute relayed back.

While the son persisted with frequent reports of what was happening inside, the sounds from inside the building matched the chaos of his thoughts.

Crashing and bangs of falling furniture radiated from every section of the building. Startled screams and shocked yelps by reporters running from a Beast being chased by a boy echoed from floor to floor.

"You think this'll be in the District reports by tomorrow?" The Substitute said, standing beside me with a disappointed look on his face.

Another bang rolled out from a floor higher up than before. The sound echoed across the street like a dramatic thunderclap. Pulling more attention from the passersby on the street. "Forget tomorrow, this'll be there by tonight!" I howled with a laugh.

'The Beast keeps on running up the floors. I can't get it to come back down.' The son relayed, sounding panicked.

'There are too many things in the way! It's ruining… everything!' He added, feeling defeated.

'Just do what you can to get it down!' My voice tinged with agitation.

Best assassins in the District, huh?

'Look here, rat-face!' Leo spoke again. 'Beasts aren't exactly our specialty. A person is a lot more predictable.'

Bretch! I didn't mean to broadcast that part…

'What in the Monarchs have you three gotten yourselves into?!' Lavinia entered my head.

'Uuuh… Just stay close by! Be ready to corner it.' The Substitutes' thoughts were rushed.

'Whatever… I hope you know, he'll kill you first.'

In a quick flash. In one second so sudden, it brought tears to my eyes. I have never seen the demeanour of a man change so fast.

The Substitute, the boy set to take on the Grimwald name, stood so still he resembled the ice he embodies. Looking so delicate, a flick would make him crumble.

'The damn Beast keeps on climbing!' The son called out again.

Rudely ruining the glorious moment of watching my nemesis in love collapsing. One in which he'll earn no sympathy.

'Damn, it just ran onto the roof. It's running to the North side!'

Begrudgingly following the son's directions, the Substitute and I ran down the street, to the North side of the building.

'Leo, what's your status?!' The Substitute relayed, somehow sounding tired through his mind.

As we reached the corner of the building, a shadow swept across my eyes. Looking up to see what's casting it, my eyes widen at the sight. Not even the blinding radiance from staring directly at the sun could pull my attention away.

Jumping off ‌the side of the building was the Volnnic gliding across the sky, towards the neighbouring building almost ten meters below. And following right behind, like a dog chasing a ball, was the son. More falling than gliding gracefully through the air like the Beast.

Using a steady burst of vibrations, the son attempted to slow his descent to a softer landing. Though all it did was make him fall in a sporadic flail.

He landed roughly on the roof of the building below, in a roll, his eyes on the sky. Tracking the gliding Volnnic as it drifted in front of him, landing on the roof of the next building over.

Without hesitation, as he seems to do a lot, the son leaped across the next five-meter gap, continuing the chase.

The two jumped from rooftop to rooftop, while the Substitute and I followed from the street.

Lavinia assaulted my mind with complaints upon hearing what the son had just done.

When the Beast reached an intersection on the road, it jumped down from the roof, and carried on right, down the new street. Taking us out of the administration section and into one of the town residence sections.

With it being late in the morning, the street was mostly empty of people and carriages..

'Lavinia, the Beast turned into the residence section. Running East, down South 6R 5th Street!' I relayed to the angel, my mental voice rushing and panicked.

'Copy.' She responded. Her smooth, calm voice gave me shivers, renewing me with confidence. 'Trailing down 4th Street. Leo, lead it my way, down an alley. Speed up!'

'You got it, sis!'

The Volnnic, ever gaining speed, was getting away from the Substitute and me, but not from the son. Using as much essence as possible, enhancing his legs, as well as a speed boost from waves of vibrations, he could catch up to the Beast.

Not wanting to be left behind, I furthered my speed by also expending essence. Breaking off from the slow frost-man.

Monarchs, he's slow. His joints must be filled with ice.
