Chapter 10 - Kane's First Assessment

Ethan barged into Gryfton P.D offices fuming as Cole and Layla followed him closely.

"Take her to the waiting room," Ethan instructed Cole as he made his way to the commissioner's office.

When he got to the door, he was surprised to see that the commissioner wasn't there. Turning around, he asked the first person that he saw,

"Where is he?"

"Where is who?" The officer inquired, confused at who Ethan was asking about.

"The commissioner goddammit!" He roared as he walked towards the waiting room.

On the way, he met Daniel, holding a few files in his hands. When Daniel saw him, he handed him some of the files and said, " You'll want to see that,"

"Sure. Where is the commissioner?" Ethan inquired, not giving a care in the world about the file that Daniel had handed to him.

"Marcus? He's in the interrogation room with Kane," Daniel answered, steering clear of Ethan who was already making his way to the interrogation room.

The doors to the room flew open and as Ethan was standing there, his eyes locked with Kane's.

'What's so special about him?' he asked himself, trying to figure out why Kane was being brought up at every corner.

To Ethan, it wasn't just the idea of Kane being a recurring name. No, it was because everytime Kane's name was being brought up, there was a small implication that Alex was better. There was the implication that Ethan couldn't solve the case.

"Ethan, I see you've decided to join us," Marcus commented, knowing full well that Ethan had more to say about Kane's name being brought up in the demand.

"What is he doing here?" Ethan questioned, with his eyes still locked on Kane.

"He's a person of interest. We need to know why his name came up in the demand," Marcus answered, trying not to sound irritated by Ethan's tone.

On the other hand, Alex Kane kept his composure by leaning back and crossing his legs. Looking at Ethan, he had a lot to say about him, but chose not to. Despite this, Kane couldn't resist the urge to poke the hornet's nest a bit.

With Ethan's glare on him, he calmly said, "Don't look at me like that. I hardly had any intentions of coming here. But with a SWAT team at my doorstep, I was left with little to no other choice."

Ethan moved slowly, taking a seat next to Marcus.

"I can tell you don't like me. From that alone, we can talk the entire day. But, you have a man to find, so I won't waste any much of your precious time." Kane added with a smile.

"How did the demand come through?" Ethan asked, directing his question to Marcus.

"I was going through my newspapers, only to find a paper that dates back to when Kane was on the force. The front page was Kane's face with the headline being how Gryfton P.D was unable to solve the disappearance of seven people," Marcus answered as he placed the newspaper on the table.

At the very top of the paper, there was a note and it said,

'Kane, don't you miss playing with us?'

Ethan rolled his eyes, palming his face and sighing loudly. He turned to Marcus, who went on,

"It has to be connected. And whoever is behind it, wants Kane back,"

Ethan was already under too much pressure, he didn't need the division to force him to work with the very same man that he kept being regarded as inferior to.

Looking at Kane, he desperately needed him to be adamant on not helping out with the case.

"Don't worry Ethan, I know you don't want to work with me. So, I'll make it better for you. I'm still not working on this case," Kane stated, looking at Marcus.

"A man's life is at stake," Marcus responded, hoping to reason with him.

"Everyone's lives is at stake every minute of every day. Besides, you are looking for O'Daniel as if he is alive," Alex retorted back, as he stood up and picked up his sweater.

A gasp at the door made everyone turn. At the door, Layla was standing there with her hand clasped over her mouth.

"Oops," Alex mumbled as he watched Marcus and Ethan glare at him.

"I'm so sorry. She heard Kane was in the building and there was nothing I could do to stop her," Cole shouted as he quickly followed Layla in standing at the door.

Marcus waved him off, allowing Layla to see Kane. He hoped that she could convince him herself. Perhaps he would listen to a woman in need.

"You're Alex Kane right?" She questioned, seeing the man standing in front of her having close resemblance to the pictures of Kane that she had seen.

"In the flesh," Alex responded.

"You're certain that my husband is dead?" She asked, her voice shaking but strong enough to know she needed to hear the truth.

Looking at Ethan and Marcus who shook their head against Alex saying what he thought, he went against what they expected him to say, and told her what the thought.

"Your husband has been missing for a couple of days now. You live in The Heights District, which means money isn't a problem, yet no ransom demand has been made so far. Working in a research facility didn't put your husband in a position to come across classified material. Which means he wasn't taken for his wealth or because of a top secret that he uncovered at work.

Given those circumstances, I doubt that your husband has any other reason to be kept alive this long. Fourty eight hours from the time an abduction is made, are the most crucial hours. That time expired a long time ago for your husband. They can't tell you that, but I certainly will," Kane informed her as he pointed to Ethan and Marcus.

"Now, since you guys have nothing to hold me here with and I assume I'm not being charged of anything, I'll be well on my way," Kane declares as he walked out of the room without another word.
