At the Yukinoshita residence, a home of considerable renown and strict tradition, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Madam Yukinoshita, immaculately dressed in a formal, conservative kimono, gazed with unblinking intensity at her younger daughter, Yukino.
Under the heavy weight of that scrutiny, Yukino stood rigidly, her head bowed and her hands neatly folded.
The silence in the room stretched like an invisible iron band, amplifying the crushing pressure she felt closing in around her.
Of all the figures in her life whom Yukino had grown up fearing—and whom she perpetually lacked the strength to resist—her mother sat absolute at the top of the list.
Yet today, driven to a quiet desperation, Yukino had finally mustered the fragile courage to voice a request.
Suddenly, her mother broke the gaze, shifting her eyes as she spoke in a measured, icy calm.
"You said you want to move out and live on your own. Why?"
Yes, Yukino desired nothing more than to pack a bag and move into an independent apartment.
She sought to briefly, desperately escape the suffocating walls of this household.
Forcing her voice to remain composed, she offered a superficially logical argument.
"I want to learn how to be truly independent. Besides, it's increasingly inconvenient to rely on the family's driver and car to commute to and from school."
On the surface, the explanation sounded reasonable and disciplined.
But deep down, Yukino's heart hammered against her ribs with anxiety.
She knew she was bending the truth, crafting a clever half-lie to mask her raw, desperate desire to flee her oppressive environment.
Normally, such dishonesty went entirely against her strict personal principles, but she felt backed into a corner, compelled to lie just to survive under her family's shadow.
Her mother glanced back at her, her eyes devoid of warmth. "Yukino, I don't recall ever teaching you that it's acceptable to lie to your mother."
Thump.
Yukino's slender frame trembled slightly.
As expected, her mother had seen right through the facade instantly.
Her mother possessed a terrifyingly sharp intellect, and as the woman who raised her, it was fundamentally impossible to hide anything.
Yukino recognized all too well that her true motive—a yearning for freedom and escape—had been completely exposed.
"You want freedom?"
"..."
Yukino lowered her head even further, her smooth black hair falling forward like a curtain to shadow her eyes, her fists clenching so tightly her knuckles turned white.
Knowing her deepest secret had been unmasked, she realized she had zero leverage to argue or defy her.
"Very well. I will grant you your freedom."
The unexpected concession caught Yukino completely off guard, her breath hitching in surprise.
"Mother... are you saying..."
Her mother regarded her with a cold, calculating gaze.
"I will allow you to move out into an apartment, but only until you graduate high school. After graduation, you will return and follow my arrangements to the letter."
"..."
Yukino's initial flicker of liberation quickly turned to ash.
As expected, true freedom did not exist in her world—everything carried a heavy price tag.
But standing before her mother, she had no bargaining power.
She had no choice.
"I understand."
"Good."
Her mother nodded once in clinical satisfaction, adding a final, chilling warning.
"Even though I am granting you this temporary residence outside, I expect you to maintain your dignity and know precisely what you should and should not do. Correct?"
"Yes, Mother."
Yukino quietly murmured her agreement, turning on her heel to retreat back to the safety of her room.
Her mother sat in silence, watching her daughter's dejected, rigid figure until the door clicked shut.
"..."
Shifting her gaze away from the door, Madam Yukinoshita looked out the grand window toward the estate gardens.
This was the burden of the Yukinoshita name.
They enjoyed all the prestige, luxury, and privilege that the family name provided, and in return, they were expected to surrender their personal agency and freedom.
Such had been the unyielding law of her own life, and so it would remain for her daughters as well.
Back in the sanctuary of her bedroom, Yukino pushed the door open, only to freeze at the sight greeting her.
Lounging casually across her neatly made bed was a young woman who looked startlingly like her, save for a sharp, confident smirk and a sleek, short black bob.
The woman stood up lazily, stretching her arms above her head with a soft yawn.
The movement instantly highlighted the most prominent physical difference between them.
Her luxuriously full, ample chest, standing in stark, teasing contrast to Yukino's own much more modest and understated figure.
"Yukino-chan, wanting to move out just to find a little freedom... isn't that just a fancy way of saying you're running away?"
Haruno Yukinoshita teased, her dark eyes glittering with amusement.
"..."
Yukino's expression darkened, a cold shadow falling over her features as she stared at her older sister.
Haruno was brilliant, effortlessly talented in every imaginable endeavor, and universally adored by everyone who met her.
Yukino, by contrast, had always felt like a pale imitation—unfavored, constantly falling short, and forever unable to meet the crushing expectations that Haruno set so naturally.
To the outside world, Yukino was viewed as sensible and well-behaved, but she painfully knew that those polite traits only translated into a cold, prickly, and thoroughly unlikable personality.
That suffocating image was the cage binding her.
Deep down, Yukino harbored a bitter secret.
She saw herself as nothing more than a living "replacement" for her sister—a hollow doll stripped of a true sense of self, condemned to forever wander the massive shadow cast by Haruno.
This desperate yearning for change, coupled with a paralyzing fear of an uncertain future, was the true reason she was fleeing.
"Sister, why are you trespassing in my room without my permission?"
Yukino asked, her voice dropping a few degrees as she refused to engage with Haruno's psychological prodding.
Sensing the sudden, brittle tension in the air, Haruno wisely decided to drop the subject for now.
As the ultimate, fiercely protective—and borderline obsessive—older sister, she had zero intention of letting Yukino slip out of her sight.
Even if her little sister actually moved into an apartment, Haruno was fully prepared to keep a very close eye on her.
Pats of her palm smoothed down her slightly wrinkled skirt, Haruno flashed a brilliant, mischievous smile.
"Oh, don't be like that. Besides, I heard you've already secured an apartment, Yukino-chan. You're moving out tomorrow, aren't you?"
