Chapter 40 - Vera's Challenge

Luck sucked in a breath at his mother's words. His mother's challenge was simply impossible.

Like the recluses they were, when his parents were given the chance to acquire land, they chose to settle in the farthest territory of the Southern Continent in Fodan territory, which just happened to be at the borders of the Human Domain.

So ironically, they weren't really isolated.

Lysarrieth city, on the otherhand, was nearing the center of the Southern Continent.

On paper, it may not seem far to reach the center from the edge, but in practice was a whole different matter entirely.

They were talking more than five thousand kilometers!

"Why are you looking so white?' Vera said with an amused smile as she watched the color drain out of her son's features. " Of course, you know five thousand kilometers is actually small in the grand scale of things.

Luck clicked his tongue in response. Several planets and worlds were fused into Earth during the Realm Fusion, making the planet multiple times bigger than its past size.

So the distance between two points on the same continent, reaching five thousand, was actually normal.

Luck sucked in another breath. Even with their speed and stamina, which had already passed the boundaries of normal human, getting there would take at least five months, and that was without rest or any complications.

(And the entrance exam is also in the next five months!)

Luck lamented in his heart. He was seriously considering leaving his friends behind in the search for greener pastures.

But of course, he had his softie of his brother with him on the journey.

"We'll do it!" Luke declared with a determined look as he smiled brightly, making Luck want to come up to him and wipe the floor with his toothy grin.

Luck thoughts wandered as he imagined himself, travelling with Harry, Luke, and the girls for the next five months.

Luck sighed. (Sometimes, I wonder why I wasn't born an only child.)

...

"I hate the bank," Luke said with slight irritation as they stepped past a pair of white pillars and into the entrance of a sizeable building.

(Weren't you the one who was all in to accept that crazy lady's challenge?) Luck thought with mirth as he gave his brother a side-long glance.

"Muscle-head," Luck muttered in annoyance as he swiftly separated from his brother and joined a queue.

His brother, though, didn't mind as he went to look at the exchange rates.

The duo was here to exchange the monster parts and corpses for money. Since they were going on a journey of that distance, they needed supplies. Supplies that his parents wouldn't give or pay for because of his mother's gargantuan task.

(So this is how peasants feel.) Luck thought to himself, forgetting he himself was a villager, just with the privilege of having two Saints as parents.

Luck put all these matters away, as it finally came to his turn.

There was no clerk at the counter. Attached to the counter, however, was a large black cauldron with a screen centered in the middle of it.

(I should have some silver coins in my savings, so I don't really need to spend that much.) Luck thought as he stretched his hand over the cauldron, allowing the shadow to wrap around it whilst he cast Shadow Inventory.

It was a trick he learnt after he looked into the skill for a bit.

(I'll throw in my E-rank cores first.) Luck thought as the cores appeared from thin air and fell into the cauldron.

The previously blank screen lit up as it showcased the number seven alongside a bronze coin.

Luck smiled. Even though he was the son of a powerhouse and wasn't supposed to care for denominations below Silver.

(Unfortunately, I was born to Dan Raizer.) Luck thought with a dejected sigh as he recalled when his father used to give them ten copper coins a week, bullcrapping that it was for them to learn 'The Value Of Money'.

Unfortunately for him, though, he had underestimated Luck's level of brilliance and distrust at that time, who immediately informed his mother.

The couple was engaged in an argument for weeks on that matter before they finally settled on one silver coin a month.

Like his father, Luck was also a money-hoarder, which made him rarely spend his allowance, leaving him with at least 20+ silver coins at the moment.

(I guess I'll throw in all my D ranks as well)

The machine indicated he had gained 3 Silver coins, causing his heart to start doing cartwheels.

Any addition to his wallet, no matter how small, was welcomed happily.

"That's enough for today." Luck muttered as he turned to leave.
