Chapter 22 - Cabbage

The next day came fast.

Very fast.

Levi slammed a well-dressed noble straight into the guild wall. Stone cracked slightly behind him. The man wheezed, feet dangling a few inches off the floor.

Levi took a slow breath. Calm. Flat. Dangerous.

Then he turned his head toward Kazuma, who stood a few steps away, sweating like he'd just run a marathon.

"Explain," Levi said, voice quiet, "why you used your Steal skill on this guy… and why he now has a bounty on your head."

Kazuma raised both hands.

"O-Okay, so, in my defense—"

The noble shouted, "HE STOLE MY FAMILY CREST RING! DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!"

Levi didn't even look at him.

"No."

Kazuma rubbed the back of his head.

"Right, so… we were walking. He was being a jerk. Like, premium-grade jerk. So I thought, 'Hey, free loot.' I used Steal. And, uh…"

He held up a gold ring.

"…It worked."

Aqua gasped dramatically.

"Kazuma! You committed theft against a noble! That's like… ultra crime!"

Wiz tilted her head.

"…But impressive."

Yunyun whispered,

"Why does it always work when it causes problems…?"

The noble struggled.

"That ring is proof of lineage! Without it I can't inherit my house title! Do you understand the chaos you've caused?!"

Kazuma looked at Levi.

"…In my defense, I didn't know it would be that important?"

Levi stared at him. Long. Unblinking.

Then he slowly lowered the noble until his feet touched the ground—but Levi's hand still gripped his collar like a leash.

Levi spoke calmly.

"You put a bounty on my party's idiot."

The noble sniffed.

"Of course I did! Ten million eris! Dead or alive!"

Aqua choked.

"TEN MILLION?!"

Kazuma turned pale.

"…I am so dead."

Levi sighed.

"Yeah. You are."

Kazuma grabbed Levi's shoulders dramatically.

"Please! You're rich! You have a mansion! A library! Three beautiful women living with you! Clearly you're winning at life! Just help me this once!"

Aqua immediately puffed up.

"He means me!"

Wiz smiled politely.

"…And me, I suppose."

Yunyun turned red and squeaked.

Levi ignored all of that.

He looked at the noble.

"You want your ring back?"

The noble nodded stiffly.

"Yes."

Levi held out his hand.

Kazuma reluctantly placed the ring in Levi's palm like he was giving up a child.

Levi handed it to the noble.

The noble snatched it back, checked it, then straightened his coat.

"Hmph. At least you have some sense. Release me."

Levi did.

The noble stepped back, adjusting his cuffs.

"The bounty stays. He dared touch a noble with criminal skill. The law is the law."

Kazuma screamed internally.

Aqua pointed.

"That's unfair! He gave it back!"

The noble smirked.

"Consequences."

He turned to leave.

Levi spoke.

"Cancel the bounty."

The noble paused.

"…What?"

Levi stepped forward. Not threatening. Just certain.

"You got your ring. You lost nothing. Cancel it."

The noble laughed.

"And if I refuse?"

Levi's eyes flashed faintly draconic for half a second.

The torches flickered.

The air grew heavy.

The noble swallowed.

"…I will… consider it."

Levi leaned slightly closer.

"You will cancel it."

A beat of silence.

Then the noble nodded quickly.

"…Yes. I will cancel it immediately. Good day."

He walked away at a speed just short of running.

The moment he was gone—

Kazuma collapsed to his knees.

"I owe you my life…"

Levi looked down at him.

"You owe me peace and quiet. And you're not getting either."

Kazuma groaned.

Aqua laughed.

"Wow, Levi. You just bullied a noble into obeying you."

Wiz smiled softly.

"That was very efficient."

Yunyun nodded quickly.

"Y-Yeah… terrifyingly efficient."

Levi turned toward the exit.

"Come on," he said. "Before Kazuma steals someone's crown next."

Kazuma raised a finger.

"…I mean, if the chance ever—"

Everyone looked at him.

Kazuma shut up.

And somewhere far away, in the deep ocean dark—

The Dragon of the Deep dreamed.

And smiled.

Outside Axel's city gates — Morning.

Adventurers gathered in a loose crowd. Nets, sacks, ropes, and various questionable tools were ready.

Above them, green shapes fluttered in the sky.

Flying cabbages.

Flapping leaves.

Judging everyone silently.

Levi stared upward.

'This world is weird…'

he thought.

'What is the DnD equivalent of this nonsense?'

Aqua stood beside him, eyes shining like she'd discovered divine treasure.

"They're vegetables that fly," she said. "This is normal here."

Levi slowly turned to look at her.

"…That sentence should not exist."

Yunyun held her staff like a spear.

"I-I heard they sell for good money… but they're fast…"

Wiz nodded softly.

"And they escape easily. That's why the guild requests help every season."

Kazuma walked over with a rope and a look of deep suffering.

"Alright everyone," he said. "The plan is simple. We catch cabbages. We get paid. We don't die. Hopefully."

Megumin pumped her fist.

"EXPLOSION would solve this problem instantly!"

Darkness raised her sword.

"Yes! I shall leap and slice them from the sky!"

Everyone ignored them.

Levi rubbed his temple.

'DnD equivalent… flying beasts with zero HP but absurd evasion.'

He looked up again as the first wave of cabbages descended, spinning through the air like smug green frisbees.

Levi exhaled.

"…Alright. Let's hunt salad."

The Flying Cabbage Hunt began.

Levi slid one hand into his pocket.

'This is all the effort they deserve,'

he thought.

Then he moved.

He dashed forward, faster than most eyes could follow. As cabbages swooped down, Levi simply kicked them mid-air—clean, controlled strikes—sending each one flying neatly into his open basket.

No wasted motion.

No drama.

Just vegetable violence.

Kazuma activated his invisibility cloak and swung his net wildly, muttering,

"Come here, you overpriced lettuce!"

Megumin was immediately swarmed by cabbages slapping her in the face.

"Why won't you hold still so I can explode you?!" she yelled.

Yunyun panicked—then cast a robe-binding spell. A floating cloth wrapped around three cabbages and dropped them safely into her sack.

"I-I did it!"

Wiz lifted her hand.

"Ice Bind."

Several cabbages froze mid-air and fell like green hailstones.

Darkness charged heroically—

—and got smacked directly in the face by a cabbage.

She fell to one knee, blushing.

"Ah… such a powerful strike…"

Aqua fired Water Bullets upward like a child with a squirt gun on divine steroids. Several cabbages got blasted down in splashes of dignity.

Other adventurers struggled, shouted, tripped, and fell.

But the crowd kept glancing at Levi.

Because while everyone else fought chaos…

Levi was calmly filling basket after basket like he was doing grocery shopping.

By the time the last cabbage escaped into the horizon, Levi's basket was overflowing.

He looked down.

"…Enough salad for a week."

Kazuma pulled off his cloak, staring.

"…Who the hell hunts cabbages like a raid boss?"

Levi looked at him.

"This was low-level content."

And the crowd of adventurers nodded silently, deeply intimidated by the man who had conquered vegetables without breaking a sweat.

The crowd was about to relax when—

"Another wave!" someone shouted.

Dozens more flying cabbages poured in from the sky, flapping wildly toward the city.

Kazuma groaned.

"Oh come on, who scheduled a second phase?!"

Levi turned sharply to Aqua and Yunyun.

"Yunyun. Aqua. Fusion move."

Both of them froze.

"Eh?!" Yunyun squeaked.

Aqua grinned instantly.

"Ohhh, a combo attack! Finally, something cool!"

They stepped forward together.

Aqua threw out her hand.

"Water Bind!"

A swirling mass of holy water burst forward.

At the same time, Yunyun extended her staff.

"Net Blast!"

A lattice of glowing magical threads shot outward.

The two spells collided—

—and fused.

A massive shining water net, wide as the city gate, formed in the air. It surged upward like a tidal wave given shape, sparkling under the sun.

FWOOOOSH!

Every single flying cabbage in the wave was caught at once, trapped inside the glowing net like terrified green fish.

The net dropped neatly to the ground.

Silence.

Then—

Aqua posed proudly.

"Behold! Divine teamwork!"

Yunyun stared at her hands.

"W-We really did it…"

Wiz clapped softly.

"How wonderful."

Darkness wiped tears from her eyes.

"So… beautiful…"

Kazuma blinked.

"You two have fusion moves?!"

His voice cracked just a little.

Levi rolled his eyes.

"I'm teaching my party combination casting. Some spells, when synchronized, can fuse into a stronger effect."

Aqua crossed her arms proudly.

"He's basically our cool sensei."

Yunyun nodded quickly.

"I-It's very hard… but really fun!"

Kazuma stared at them like a man watching someone else live his dream.

"…Meanwhile I'm over here proud I learned how to steal underwear."

Megumin put a hand on his shoulder.

"It is a powerful art."

Darkness nodded seriously.

"Truly frightening."

Levi looked at the three of them.

"…Your party is a cautionary tale."

Kazuma sighed.

"Yeah. I know."

Then he glanced at the enormous net full of cabbages.

"…Can I at least get a share of the profit?"

Levi shrugged.

"Ask Aqua. She caught half of them."

Aqua immediately hugged the net like a dragon guarding treasure.

"Mine."

Kazuma screamed internally.

Levi then put half in another bag as he gave to Kazuma party. "You helped, even if you guys got 20,000 Eris".

Kazuma blinked. "How much Eris do you have in the Mansion".

Aqua answered him, hugging Levi arm. "Let's seeing, um 800,00000 Eris".

Kazuma froze.

Not just blinked. Not just surprised.

His soul left his body for a second.

"...Eight… hundred… million… eris?"

The entire guild went silent.

Adventurers stopped drinking.

Luna's pen snapped in half.

Darkness slowly turned her head like a horror movie doll.

Megumin whispered, "Explosion wouldn't even scratch that wealth…"

Aqua, still hugging Levi's arm like a satisfied cat, nodded proudly.

"Yup! Levi's super rich! Underwater dragon palace, magic library, water spirit staff, ocean-view bedrooms—"

Levi gently placed a hand on her forehead and pushed her away just enough to regain personal space.

"I told you not to announce it," he said, voice calm but tired.

Wiz gave a tiny apologetic bow.

"She gets excited…"

Yunyun was already trying to hide behind Levi's coat like she'd committed a crime.

Kazuma slowly reached out and grabbed Levi by the shoulders.

"Listen. Friend. Buddy. Pal. Partner in isekai suffering."

His eyes glowed with desperate intensity.

"Adopt me."

Levi stared.

"…No."

Kazuma immediately dropped to his knees.

"Then lend me money!"

"No."

"Invest in my business ventures!"

"No."

"Marry Aqua and become my in-law so I can borrow indirectly!"

Levi looked at Aqua.

Aqua looked back, smug.

Levi turned back to Kazuma.

"…Yes, but you not related to her so no."

The guild burst into laughter.

Even Luna had to cover her mouth.

Kazuma lay flat on the floor, defeated.

"This world is unfair…"

Levi started walking toward the exit.

Aqua clung to his left arm like a victorious trophy.

Yunyun clung to his right arm like an anxious support plush.

Wiz followed calmly behind, hands folded, smiling like a proud mom watching her chaotic children.

It was an absurd formation.

And everyone in the guild watched them leave like they were witnessing a traveling circus of divine nonsense.

Just before stepping out the door, Levi paused.

He turned his head slightly toward Kazuma, who was still lying face-down on the floor of despair.

Levi's tone was calm. Practical. Almost kind.

"I'll give you one real piece of advice to fix your money problem."

Kazuma lifted his head just enough to listen, hope flickering in his dead eyes.

"Find an Artificer," Levi said. "A real one. Then tell them about the technology from your world. Simple machines. Plumbing. Fertilizer. Printing presses. Anything. Don't try to sell magic. Sell convenience."

Kazuma's eyes slowly widened.

Levi continued.

"This world is medieval. Even small efficiency improvements change economies. You don't need to fight Demon Kings to get rich. You need mass production."

Silence.

Then Kazuma sat up abruptly.

"…Oh."

Megumin leaned toward Darkness.

"…He just gave him a civilization speedrun."

Darkness whispered back.

"…That's somehow scarier than Explosion."

Aqua tugged Levi's sleeve.

"Are we going home now?"

Levi nodded.

Wiz smiled.

"Dinner?"

Yunyun nodded quickly.

"Y-Yes please!"

Levi sighed, but there was the faintest hint of amusement in his eyes.

"Yeah. Let's go home."

And as they walked out—

Kazuma stared at the ceiling.

"Artificer… mass production… printing press… plumbing…"

Then he whispered, with terrifying determination:

"…I'm going to become a capitalist."

Somewhere in the distance, Eris felt a chill run down her spine.

Back in the underwater mansion, everything was quiet again.

The kind of quiet that only existed miles beneath the sea, where the world above couldn't reach and responsibilities felt far away.

Levi sat on the long couch in the library lounge, boots off, gunblade resting nearby.

His head lay on Wiz's soft thighs.

Wiz gently stroked his hair, slow and soothing, like she was calming a restless dragon — which, technically, she was.

Aqua was on the other side of the couch, half lying down, hugging a cushion like it owed her money.

Yunyun sat on the floor near Levi's feet, reading a spellbook but sneaking glances every few seconds.

Wiz spoke softly.

"Do you like Kazuma?"

Levi didn't open his eyes.

"I don't like him," he said. "But I don't dislike him either. He's… functional. And he needed advice. That's reason enough."

Wiz leaned closer and kissed his forehead.

"You're very sweet, Levi-sama."

Levi opened one eye slightly.

"I guess."

Aqua immediately lifted her head.

"Oi. Why does Wiz get forehead kisses and I don't?"

Levi closed his eye again.

"Because Wiz didn't try to drown a city last week."

"That was ONE TIME."

Yunyun quietly raised her hand like she was in class.

"Um… I also didn't drown a city…"

Levi opened his other eye and looked down at her.

"…Noted."

Yunyun turned bright red and returned to her book, now pretending to read very seriously.

Wiz giggled softly.

Levi exhaled and let his eyes close again.

The mansion lights shimmered gently. Water spirits drifted past the glass walls outside. Fish glowed like moving stars.

For a moment, everything was peaceful.

Then—

Aqua suddenly sat up straight.

"Wait."

Everyone looked at her.

She narrowed her eyes at Levi.

"You said you don't like Kazuma… but you still gave him advice… doesn't that mean…"

She leaned closer.

"…you're a tsundere?"

Levi opened both eyes fully.

He sat up.

He looked Aqua directly in the face.

"…Aqua."

"Yes?"

"If you say that word again in my presence…"

He paused.

"…I will personally introduce you to the nearest trench demon and let you explain anime tropes to it."

Aqua zipped her mouth shut instantly.

Wiz covered her smile with her hand.

Yunyun whispered:

"…Worth it…"

Levi lay back down on Wiz's lap.

Peace restored.

At least until tomorrow.

Because this was Konosuba.

And chaos always respawned.
