Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: Digging One’s Own Grave

"My turn?" Jeanne muttered. "Where's my flag…?"

High in the sky, Vimana hovered. The team had pulled Siegfried from the recovery capsule, trying every method to heal him.

"Rikka, use the Atlas Institute attire," Olga-Marie instructed. "It has the Isis Rain skill for curse-breaking."

"Got it!" Rikka called. "Form-Change, Atlas!"

Flash! Her appearance shifted, donning a unique uniform distinct from the Mage's Attire.

"While we're at it, summon Chaldea's Jeanne," Gilgamesh said. "Her screws are loose, but better she's useful than idle."

"Chaldea's me…?" Jeanne mused. "That feels strange. Is she doing alright?"

"I told you, her screws are loose," Gilgamesh said. "Seeing is believing. Summon her, Master."

My impression—Chaldea's Jeanne is bright and lively, while this Jeanne feels calm.

Strange how the same person changes depending on where they're summoned. But both are adorable, no question.

"That's the charm of Servants!" Rikka said. "So cool! I'd love to chat with another me!"

"Wonder if there's another me," Amadeus said. "Ugh, I'd be sick of my own nonsense."

"Alright!" Rikka said. "Jeanne d'Arc!'"

Her right hand glowed, connecting to Chaldea.

"—Hello!" a voice chirped. "Chaldea's Jeanne d'Arc here! Everyone doing okay? Yup!"

"You're… Chaldea's me," Jeanne said.

The two Jeannes faced each other.

Same face… well, obviously.

"I'll select some curse-breaking Noble Phantasms," Gilgamesh said. "He can't show his true worth until fully restored."

"Sorry…" Siegfried said. "No, apologizing when I'm not at fault is rude. Sorry."

"Is your soul's origin apology or something?" Gilgamesh quipped.

While the two saints and Master worked on the curse, Siegfried shared his tale.

Summoned early without a Master, he wandered, aiding a town under attack. Wielding Balmung was no issue, but multiple enemy Servants overwhelmed him. Another Servant hid him, leaving him stranded until now.

"The Servant who sheltered me… she felt like you," Siegfried said. "Like all of you."

"Saint Martha…!" Jeanne gasped.

"As expected of our soul's senior!" Chaldea's Jeanne said. "Bonded by dragon-taming, our souls just clicked! Truly fate!"

"Dragon…?" Siegfried tilted his head. "That was… a turtle? A turtle-dragon? Could be…"

Truly, Martha guided us on this journey's right path.

And Siegfried—taking up his sword against danger, shielding the weak without hesitation. A hero by nature.

His way of life, protecting others despite his own limits, set my soul ablaze.

I want to live like that. Even if I don't understand good or evil fully—

I choose good. To live by my pride and duty, like this king.

That's why the world was so beautiful—seen through the lens of goodness.

"—What's wrong, King of Heroes?" Siegfried asked.

"Nothing," Gilgamesh said. "Just whimsy, dragon-slayer."

"Sorry."

"I told you, stop apologizing, you humble fool."

"—Curse-breaking's mostly done!" Chaldea's Jeanne announced cheerfully.

"Report!" she continued. "Ninety percent of the curses are lifted, but the dragon-slaying aspect of his Spirit Origin needs one more saint!"

"You and the country girl, plus Master, and it's still not enough?" Gilgamesh said. "What a thorough curse."

"We need a Baptism Rite," Olga-Marie said. "One more Servant saint is essential."

"Saints don't just roll around," Gilgamesh said. "Not like that Saber knockoff."

"Hey, King of Heroes!" Okita protested.

"Really?" Chaldea's Jeanne said. "I think one saint means thirty are nearby!"

"We need to stop that god's rampage," Gilgamesh said. "No, more Sabers would be fine."

A god who makes saints sounds like a good god to me.

"Hehe, Chaldea's Jeanne?" Jeanne said. "Let's save our chat for when I visit Chaldea. You look so happy!"

"Yup!" Chaldea's Jeanne beamed. "I'm happy!"

"Good, your task's done," Gilgamesh said. "You can go."

"Yes! …King of Heroes!"

"What, another report?"

"When you return safely, I want you to try something I'll cook!" she said. "I'll make it with all my heart, so please eat it!"

Jeanne's cooking… I wonder what it tastes like?

"Hm?" Gilgamesh said. "Not bad for a country girl. Fine, I permit it. In my name as king, I'll eat every bite."

The king spoke grandly.

"I'm so happy!" Chaldea's Jeanne said. "Good luck, everyone! I'll cheer you on!"

"Yes, take care…" Jeanne replied.

Chaldea's Jeanne returned to her realm.

"Hmph, rustic country food might be nice for a change," Gilgamesh mused. "Bread and soup. Gold leaf would help."

Looking down, I saw Fou staring up.

"What's up, rare beast?" Gilgamesh asked.

"Fou (My condolences. You dug your own grave.)"

Pity and… sympathy glimmered in its eyes.

"Alright, let's cook!" Jeanne exclaimed.
